9b9e36ed49 MDEV-8779: mysqld got signal 11 in sql/opt_range_mrr.cc:100(step_down_to)
The crash was caused by range optimizer using RANGE_OPT_PARAM::min_key
(and max_key) to store keys. Buffer size was a good upper bound for
range analysis and partition pruning, but not for EITS selectivity
calculations.

Fixed by making these buffers variable-size. The sizes are calculated
from [pseudo]indexes used for range analysis.

31e365efae MDEV-8010 - Avoid sql_alloc() in Items (Patch #1)
Added mandatory thd parameter to Item (and all derivative classes) constructor.
Added thd parameter to all routines that may create items.
Also removed "current_thd" from Item::Item. This reduced number of
pthread_getspecific() calls from 290 to 177 per OLTP RO transaction.

6e091dc7ff Splitting a static function get_func_mm_tree() into virtual
methods in Item_bool_func descendants, which gives some advantages:
- Removing the "bool inv" parameter, as its now available through "this"
  for Item_func_between and Item_func_in, and is not needed for the other
  Item_func_xxx.
- Removing casts
- Making a step to data types plugings

FIND_USED_PARTITIONS | SQL/OPT_RANGE.CC:3884

Issue:
-----
During partition pruning, first we identify the partition
in which row can reside and then identify the subpartition.
If we find a partition but not the subpartion then we hit
a debug assert. While finding the subpartition we check
the current thread's error status in part_val_int()
function after some operation. In this case the thread's
error status is already set to an error (multiple rows
returned) so the function returns no partition found and
results in incorrect behavior.

SOLUTION:
---------
Currently any error encountered in part_val_int is
considered a "partition not found" type error. Instead of
an assert, a check needs to be done and a valid error
returned.

7332af49e4 - Renaming variables so that they don't shadow others (After this patch one can compile with -Wshadow and get much fewer warnings)
- Changed ER(ER_...) to ER_THD(thd, ER_...) when thd was known or if there was many calls to current_thd in the same function.
- Changed ER(ER_..) to ER_THD_OR_DEFAULT(current_thd, ER...) in some places where current_thd is not necessary defined.
- Removing calls to current_thd when we have access to thd

Part of this is optimization (not calling current_thd when not needed),
but part is bug fixing for error condition when current_thd is not defined
(For example on startup and end of mysqld)

Notable renames done as otherwise a lot of functions would have to be changed:
- In JOIN structure renamed:
   examined_rows -> join_examined_rows
   record_count -> join_record_count
- In Field, renamed new_field() to make_new_field()

Other things:
- Added DBUG_ASSERT(thd == tmp_thd) in Item_singlerow_subselect() just to be safe.
- Removed old 'tab' prefix in JOIN_TAB::save_explain_data() and use members directly
- Added 'thd' as argument to a few functions to avoid calling current_thd.

86377d078e Fixes done while working on MDEV-4119:
Fixed several optimizer issues relatied to GROUP BY:

a) Refering to a SELECT column in HAVING sometimes calculated it twice, which caused problems with non determinstic functions

b) Removing duplicate fields and constants from GROUP BY was done too late for "using index for group by" optimization to work

c) EXPLAIN SELECT ... GROUP BY did wrongly show 'Using filesort' in some cases involving "Using index for group-by"


a) was fixed by:
- Changed last argument to Item::split_sum_func2() from bool to int to allow more flags
- Added flag argument to Item::split_sum_func() to allow on to specify if the item was in the SELECT part
- Mark all split_sum_func() calls from SELECT with SPLIT_SUM_SELECT
- Changed split_sum_func2() to do nothing if called with an argument that is not a sum function and doesn't include sum functions, if we are not an argument to SELECT.

This ensures that in a case like
select a*sum(b) as f1 from t1 where a=1 group by c having f1 <= 10;

That 'a' in the SELECT part is stored as a reference in the temporary table togeher with sum(b) while the 'a' in having isn't (not needed as 'a' is already a reference to a column in the result)

b) was fixed by:
- Added an extra remove_const() pass for GROUP BY arguments before make_join_statistics() in case of one table SELECT.

This allowes get_best_group_min_max() to optimize things better.

c) was fixed by:
- Added test for group by optimization in JOIN::exec_inner for
  select->quick->get_type() == QUICK_SELECT_I::QS_TYPE_GROUP_MIN_MAX

item.cc:
- Simplifed Item::split_sum_func2()
  - Split test to make them faster and easier to read
  - Changed last argument to Item::split_sum_func2() from bool to int to allow more flags

- Moved printing of "Error in remove_const" to remove_const() instead of having it in caller.

- update_depend_map_for_order() and remove_const() fixed to handle the case where make_join_statistics() has not yet been called (join->join_tab is 0 in this case)

5991efc382 MDEV-7950 Item_func::type() takes 0.26% in OLTP RO
Step #8: Adding get_mm_tree() in Item_func, Item_func_between,
Item_func_in, Item_equal. This removes one virtual call item->type()
in queries like:
  SELECT * FROM t1 WHERE c BETWEEN const1 AND const2;
  SELECT * FROM t1 WHERE c>const;
  SELECT * FROM t1 WHERE c IN (const_list);

Step #7 (mostly preparatory for the next step #8):
Splitting the function get_mm_parts() into a virtual method in Item.
This changes a virtual call for item->type() into a virtual call for item->get_mm_tree(),
but also *removes* one virtual call Item_cond::functype(), which used to distinguish
between COND_AND_FUNC vs COND_OR_FUNC.

4d1ccc4289 MDEV-7951 - sql_alloc() takes 0.25% in OLTP RO
sql_alloc() has additional costs compared to direct mem_root allocation:
- function call: it is defined in a separate translation unit and can't be
  inlined
- it needs to call pthread_getspecific() to get THD::mem_root

It is called dozens of times implicitely at least by:
- List<>::push_back()
- List<>::push_front()
- new (for Sql_alloc derived classes)
- sql_memdup()

Replaced lots of implicit sql_alloc() calls with direct mem_root allocation,
passing through THD pointer whenever it is needed.

Number of sql_alloc() calls reduced 345 -> 41 per OLTP RO transaction.
pthread_getspecific() overhead dropped 0.76 -> 0.59
sql_alloc() overhed dropped 0.25 -> 0.06

00475d40d1 MDEV-7118: Anemometer stop working after upgrade to from...
When the optimizer considers an option to use Loose Scan, it should 
still consider UNIQUE keys (Previously, MDEV-4120 disabled loose scan
for all kinds of unique indexes. That was wrong)

However, we should not use Loose Scan when trying to satisfy 
 "SELECT DISTINCT col1, col2, .. colN"
when using an index defined as UNIQU(col1, col2, ... colN).

Disallow using indexes on non-temporal columns to optimize
ref access, range access and table elimination when the counterpart's
cmp_type is TIME_RESULT, e.g.:
  SELECT * FROM t1 WHERE indexed_int_column=time_expression;
Only index on a temporal column can be used to optimize temporal comparison
operations.

70823e1d91 MDEV-5120 Test suite test maria-no-logging fails
The reason for the failure was a bug in an include file on debian that causes 'struct stat'
to have different sized depending on the environment.

This patch fixes so that we always include my_global.h or my_config.h before we include any other files.

Other things:
- Removed #include <my_global.h> in some include files; Better to always do this at the top level to have as few
  "always-include-this-file-first' files as possible.
- Removed usage of some include files that where already included by my_global.h or by other files.

c945233a19 MDEV-6657: Poor plan choice for ORDER BY key DESC optimization...
The problem was caused by the following scenario:
- range optimizer picks an index IDX1 which doesn't match the ORDER BY ...
  LIMIT clause.
- test_if_skip_sort_order() decides to switch to index IDX2 which matches
  the ORDER BY ... LIMIT.
- it runs SQL_SELECT::test_quick_select() for the second time to produce
  an quick select for IDX2.
- However, test_quick_select() would figure that full index scan on IDX1
  is still cheaper (its calculations ignore the LIMIT n).

Fixed this by
- passing force_quick_range=true to test_quick_select()
- in test_quick_select, don't consider full index scans if the mentioned
  parameter is true.

Numerous changes in .result files are caused by test_quick_select() being
run after "early/late NULLs filtering" feature has injected NOT NULL
condition.

f1a1683309 MDEV-6384: It seems like OPTIMIZER take into account the order of indexes in the table
When ORDER BY ... LIMIT check whether it should switch from index IDX1
to index IDX2, it should not ignore the fact that IDX2 may have a
potential range or ref(const) access.
Istead, it should calculate their costs: there is now a saved range
optimizer cost and code to re-calculate what best_access_path()
calculated for ref(const).

be00e279c6 MDEV-6480: Remove conditions for which range optimizer returned SEL_ARG::IMPOSSIBLE
Let range optimizer remove parts of OR-clauses for which range analysis
produced SEL_TREE(IMPOSSIBLE).
There is no need to remove parts of AND-clauses: either they are inside
of OR (and the whole AND-clause will be removed), or the AND-clause is
at the top level, in which case the whole WHERE (or ON) is always FALSE
and this is a degenerate case which receives special treatment.

The removal process takes care not to produce 1-way ORs (in that case
we substitute the OR for its remaining member).

IS [NOT] NULL predicate is sargable within an outer join. Range
analysis only uses predicates from ON expressions, which have
regular semantics (without null-complemented rows, etc).
There is no reason not use IS [NOT] NULL predicates.

- Filesort has an optmization where it reads only columns that are 
  needed before the sorting is done.
- When ref(_or_null) is picked by the join optimizer, it may remove parts
  of WHERE clause that are guaranteed to be true.
- However, if we use quick select, we must put all of the range columns into the 
  read set. Not doing so will may cause us to fail to detect the end of the range.

If a query uses loose index scan and it has both
AGG(DISTINCT) and MIN()/MAX()functions. Then, result values
of MIN/MAX() is set improperly.
When query has AGG(DISTINCT) then end_select is set to
end_send_group. "end_send_group" keeps doing aggregation
until it sees a record from next group. And, then it will
send out the result row of that group.
Since query also has MIN()/MAX() and loose index scan is
used, values of MIN/MAX() are set as part of loose index
scan itself. Setting MIN()/MAX() values as part of loose
index scan overwrites values computed in end_send_group.
This caused invalid result.
For such queries to work loose index scan should stop
performing MIN/MAX() aggregation. And, let end_send_group to
do the same. But according to current design loose index
scan can produce only one row per group key. If we have both
MIN() and MAX() then it has to give two records out. This is
not possible as interface has to use common buffer
record[0]! for both records at a time.

SOLUTIONS:
----------
For such queries to work we need a new interface for loose
index scan. Hence, do not choose loose_index_scan for such
cases. So a new rule SA7 is introduced to take care of the
same.

SA7: "If Q has both AGG_FUNC(DISTINCT ...) and
      MIN/MAX() functions then loose index scan access
      method is not used."

and minmax parts separately. It therefore applies all the
conditions on the group parts first to the fetched row.
Then in the call to next_max, it processes the conditions
which have min/max keypart.

For ex in the following query:
Select f1, max(f2) from t1 where (f1 = 10 and f2 = 13) or
(f1 = 3) group by f1;
Condition (f2 = 13) would be applied even for rows that
satisfy (f1 = 3) thereby giving wrong results.

Solution:
Do not choose loose_index_scan for such cases. So a new rule
WA2 is introduced to take care of the same.

WA2: "If there are predicates on C, these predicates must
be in conjuction to all predicates on all earlier keyparts
in I."

Todo the same, fix reuses the function get_constant_key_infix().
Since this funciton will fail for all multi-range conditions, it
is re-written to recognize that if the sub-conditions are
equivalent across the disjuncts: it will now succeed.
And to achieve this a new helper function is introduced called
all_same().

The fix also moves the test of NGA3 up to the former only
caller, get_constant_key_infix().

3e0f63c18f Fixed the problem of mdev-5947.
Back-ported from the mysql 5.6 code line the patch with
the following comment:

  Fix for Bug#11757108 CHANGE IN EXECUTION PLAN FOR COUNT_DISTINCT_GROUP_ON_KEY
                       CAUSES PEFORMANCE REGRESSION

  The cause for the performance regression is that the access strategy for the
  GROUP BY query is changed form using "index scan" in mysql-5.1 to use "loose
  index scan" in mysql-5.5. The index used for group by is unique and thus each
  "loose scan" group will only contain one record. Since loose scan needs to
  re-position on each "loose scan" group this query will do a re-position for
  each index entry. Compared to just reading the next index entry as a normal
  index scan does, the use of loose scan for this query becomes more expensive.

  The cause for selecting to use loose scan for this query is that in the current
  code when the size of the "loose scan" group is one, the formula for
  calculating the cost estimates becomes almost identical to the cost of using
  normal index scan. Differences in use of integer versus floating point arithmetic
  can cause one or the other access strategy to be selected.

  The main issue with the formula for estimating the cost of using loose scan is
  that it does not take into account that it is more costly to do a re-position
  for each "loose scan" group compared to just reading the next index entry.
  Both index scan and loose scan estimates the cpu cost as:

    "number of entries needed too read/scan" * ROW_EVALUATE_COST

  The results from testing with the query in this bug indicates that the real
  cost for doing re-position four to eight times higher than just reading the
  next index entry. Thus, the cpu cost estimate for loose scan should be increased.
  To account for the extra work to re-position in the index we increase the
  cost for loose index scan to include the cost of navigating the index.
  This is modelled as a function of the height of the b-tree:

    navigation cost= ceil(log(records in table)/log(indexes per block))
                   * ROWID_COMPARE_COST;

  This will avoid loose index scan being used for indexes where the "loose scan"
  group contains very few index entries.

MDEV-5984: EITS: Incorrect filtered% value for single-table select with range access
- Fix calculate_cond_selectivity_for_table() to work correctly with range accesses 
  over multi-component keys:
  = First, take selectivity of all possible range scans into account. Remember which 
    fields were used bt the range scans.
  = Then, calculate selectivity produced by sargable predicates on fields. If a 
    field was used in a possible range access, assume its selectivity is already
    taken into account.
- Fix table_cond_selectivity(): when quick select is used, selectivity of
  COND(table) is taken into account in matching_candidates_in_table(). In
  table_cond_selectivity() we should not apply it for the second time.

33c66eb7fb MDEV-4120: UNIQUE indexes should not be considered for loose index scan
Currently the loose scan code in opt_range.cc considers all indexes as
possible for the access method. Due to inexact statistics it may happen
that a loose scan is selected over a unique index.
  
This is clearly wrong since a "loose scan" over a unique index will read
the same keys as a direct index scan, but the loose scan has more overhead.
  
This task adds a rule to skip unique indexes for loose scan.

66ec79fc87 Fix for MDEV-4219 A simple select query returns random data (upstream bug#68473)
In the case of loose scan used as input for order by, end_send()
didn't detect correctly that a loose scan was used, and didn't copy
the non-aggregated fields from the temp table used for ORDER BY.
  
The fix uses the fact that the quick select used for sorting is
attached to JOIN::pre_sort_join_tab instead of JOIN::join_tab.

get_mm_leaf function can store all sorts of spatial features in
        one type of field it receives from an Item_field.
        So we just allow that by setting the type of this field to GEOMETRY.

385de8743a If a range tree has a branch that is an expensive constant,
currently get_mm_tree skipped the evaluation of this constant
and icorrectly proceeded. The correct behavior is to return a
NULL subtree, according to the IF branch being fixed - when it
evaluates the constant it returns a value, and doesn't continue

d4b1e8f31a Fix for MDEV-4140
Analysis:
Range analysis detects that the subquery is expensive and doesn't
build a range access method. Later, the applicability test for loose
scan doesn't take that into account, and builds a loose scan method
without a range scan on the min/max column. As a result loose scan
fetches the first key in each group, rather than the first key that
satisfies the condition on the min/max column.

Solution:
Since there is no SEL_ARG tree to be used for the min/max column,
it is not possible to use loose scan if the min/max column is compared
with an expensive scalar subquery. Make the test for loose scan
applicability to be in sync with the range analysis code by testing if
the min/max argument is compared with an expensive predicate.

0b2dc3fc59 Fix for bug MDEV-765 (LP:825075)
Analys:
The cause for the wrong result was that the optimizer
incorrectly chose min/max loose scan when it is not
applicable. The applicability test missed the case when
a condition on the MIN/MAX argument was OR-ed with a
condition on some other field. In this case, the MIN/MAX
condition cannot be used for loose scan.

Solution:
Extend the test check_group_min_max_predicates() to check
that the WHERE clause is of the form: "cond1 AND cond2"
where 
  cond1 - does not use min_max_column at all.
  cond2 - is an AND/OR tree with leaves in form "min_max_column $CMP$ const"
          or $CMP$ is one of the functions between, is [not] null

768b62fe2f Fix bug MDEV-641
Analysis:
Range analysis discoveres that the query can be executed via loose index scan for GROUP BY.
Later, GROUP BY analysis fails to confirm that the GROUP operation can be computed via an
index because there is no logic to handle duplicate field references in the GROUP clause.
As a result the optimizer produces an inconsistent plan. It constructs a temporary table,
but on the other hand the group fields are not set to point there.
    
Solution:
Make loose scan analysis work in sync with order by analysis. In the case of duplicate
columns loose scan will not be applicable. This limitation will be lifted in 10.0 by
removing duplicate columns.

  get_next()  will set table->read_set when invoked and restore it back to what 
  it was before the call before they return.

  This allows to avoid the mess when somebody else modifies table->read_set for

a260b15554 MDEV-4011 Added per thread memory counting and usage
Base code and idea from a patch from by plinux at Taobao.

The idea is that we mark all memory that are thread specific with MY_THREAD_SPECIFIC.
Memory counting is done per thread in the my_malloc_size_cb_func callback function from my_malloc().
There are plenty of new asserts to ensure that for a debug server the counting is correct.

Information_schema.processlist gets two new columns: MEMORY_USED and EXAMINED_ROWS.
- The later is there mainly to show how query is progressing.

The following changes in interfaces was needed to get this to work:
- init_alloc_root() amd init_sql_alloc() has extra option so that one can mark memory with MY_THREAD_SPECIFIC
- One now have to use alloc_root_set_min_malloc() to set min memory to be allocated by alloc_root()
- my_init_dynamic_array()  has extra option so that one can mark memory with MY_THREAD_SPECIFIC
- my_net_init() has extra option so that one can mark memory with MY_THREAD_SPECIFIC
- Added flag for hash_init() so that one can mark hash table to be thread specific.
- Added flags to init_tree() so that one can mark tree to be thread specific.
- Removed with_delete option to init_tree(). Now one should instead use MY_TREE_WITH_DELETE_FLAG.
- Added flag to Warning_info::Warning_info() if the structure should be fully initialized.
- String elements can now be marked as thread specific.
- Internal HEAP tables are now marking it's memory as MY_THREAD_SPECIFIC.
- Changed type of myf from int to ulong, as this is always a set of bit flags.

Other things:
- Removed calls to net_end() and thd->cleanup() as these are now done in ~THD()
- We now also show EXAMINED_ROWS in SHOW PROCESSLIST
- Added new variable 'memory_used'
- Fixed bug where kill_threads_for_user() was using the wrong mem_root to allocate memory.
- Removed calls to the obsoleted function init_dynamic_array()
- Use set_current_thd() instead of my_pthread_setspecific_ptr(THR_THD,...)

this query if there is an index 'i' covering all fields in the
select list, and the GROUP BY clause makes up a prefix f1,...,fn
of 'i'. Furthermore, according to rule NGA2 of
get_best_group_min_max(), the WHERE clause must contain a
conjunction of equality predicates for all fields fn+1,...,fm.

The problem in this bug was that a query with WHERE clause that
broke NGA2(NGA: Non Group Attribuite) was not detected and therefore 
used loose index scan.
This lead to wrong result. The query had an index
covering (c1,c2) and had:
  "WHERE (c1 = 1 AND c2 = 'a') OR (c1 = 2 AND c2 = 'b')
   GROUP BY c1"
or 
  "WHERE (c1 = 1 ) OR (c1 = 2 AND c2 = 'b')
   GROUP BY c1"


This WHERE clause cannot be transformed to a conjunction of
equality predicates.

The solution is to introduce another rule, NGA3, that complements
NGA2. NGA3 says that if a gap field (field between those
listed in GROUP BY and C in the index) has a predicate, then
there can only be one range in the query. This requirement is
more strict than it has to be in theory. BUG 15947433 will deal
with that.

96c373c51a Bug#15972635: Incorrect results returned in 32 table join with HAVING
The problem is a shift operation that is not 64-bit safe.
The consequence is that used tables information for a join with 32 tables
or more will be incorrect.

Fixed by adding a type cast in Item_sum::update_used_tables().

Also used the opportunity to fix some other potential bugs by adding an
explicit type-cast to an integer in a left-shift operation.
Some of them were quite harmless, but was fixed in order to get the same
signed-ness as the other operand of the operation it was used in.

Now, ROR-merged QUICK_RANGE_SELECT objects make no assumptions about the values
of table->read_set and table->write_set.
Each QUICK_ROR_SELECT has (and had before) its own column bitmap, but now, all 
QUICK_ROR_SELECT's functions that care: reset(), init_ror_merged_scan(), and 
get_next()  will set table->read_set when invoked and restore it back to what 
it was before the call before they return.

This allows to avoid the mess when somebody else modifies table->read_set for

6592afd5c2 Bug#14342883: SELECT QUERY RETURNS NOT ALL
ROWS THAT ARE EXPECTED

For non range/list partitioned tables (i.e. HASH/KEY):

When prune_partitions finds a multi-range list
(or in this test '<>') for a field of the partition index,
even if it cannot make any use of the multi-range,
it will continue with the next field of the partition index
and use that for pruning (even if it the previous
field could not be used). This results in partitions is
pruned away, leaving partitions that only matches
the last field in the partition index, and will exclude
partitions which might match any previous fields.

Fixed by skipping rest of partitioning key fields/parts
if current key field/part could not be used.

Also notice it is the order of the fields in the CREATE TABLE
statement that triggers this bug, not the order of fields in
primary/unique key or PARTITION BY KEY ().
It must not be the last field in the partitioning expression that
is not equal (or have a non single point range).
I.e. the partitioning index is created with the same field order
as in the CREATE TABLE. And for the bug to appear
the last field must be a single point and some previous field
must be a multi-point range.

To calculate the final result of the count(distinct(select 1))
we call 'end_send' function instead of 'end_send_group'.
'end_send' cannot be called if we have aggregate functions
that need to be evaluated.

ANALYSIS:
While evaluating for a possible loose_index_scan option for
the query, the variable 'is_agg_distinct' is set to 'false'
as the item in the distinct clause is not a field. But, we
choose loose_index_scan by not taking this into 
consideration.
So, while setting the final 'select_function' to evaluate
the result, 'precomputed_group_by' is set to TRUE as in
this case loose_index_scan is chosen and we do not have
agg_distinct in the query (which is clearly wrong as we
have one).
As a result, 'end_send' function is chosen as the final
select_function instead of 'end_send_group'. The difference
between the two being, 'end_send_group' evaluates the
aggregates while 'end_send' does not. Hence the wrong result.

FIX:
The variable 'is_agg_distinct' always represents if 
'loose_idnex_scan' can be chosen for aggregate_distinct 
functions present in the select.
So, we check for this variable to continue with 
loose_index_scan option.


sql/opt_range.cc:
  Do not continue if is_agg_distinct is not set in case
  of agg_distinct functions.

This is a backport of the fix for MySQL bug #13723054 in 5.6.

Original comment:
      The crash is caused by arbitrary memory area owerwriting in case of
      BLOB fields during attempt to copy BLOB field key image into record
      buffer(record buffer is too small to get BLOB key part image).
      note:
      QUICK_GROUP_MIN_MAX_SELECT can not work with BLOB fields
      because it uses record buffer as temporary buffer for key values
      however this case is filtered out by covering_keys() check
      in get_best_group_min_max() as BLOBs always require key length
      modificator in the key declaration and if the key has a BLOB
      then it can not be covered key.
      The fix is to use 'max_used_key_length' key length instead of 0.

Analysis:
Spcifically the crash in this bug was a result of the call to key_copy()
that copied the whole key, inlcuding the BLOB field which is not used
for index access. Copying the blob field overwrote memory as far as the
function parameter 'key_info'. As a result the contents of key_info was
all 0, which resulted in a crash when this key_info was accessed few
lines below in key_cmp().

2d19b077d5 Fixed LP bug #928352.
This bug led to wrong values of the use_count fields in some SEL_ARG
trees that triggered complains on the server side when executing the
test case for LP bug 800184 if a debug build of the server was used.
  
This was the result of the incomplete fix for bug 800184.
To complete it the following corrections had to be made:
- the copy constructor for SEL_TREE must call the new function incr_refs_all()
  instead of the function incr_refs(), because references to next key parts
  from any SEL_ARG tree belonging to the list of the first key part has to be
  adjusted.
- the method and_sel_tree of the class SEL_IMERGE must use the copy constructor
  of the SEL_TREE class to make a copy of its second argument before it ANDs it
  with any SEL_TREE tree from the processed SEL_IMERGE object.
