fa61c0499a Bug#12347040: MEMORY LEAK IN CONVERT_TZ COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE
DOS ATTACKS

Problem:
For detailed description, see Bug#42502. This bug is a duplicate
of Bug#42502. The complete fix for Bug#42502 was not made as
proposed. Hence the bug still persists.

Fix:
Make the changes as proposed originally for the bugfix of 42502.
Which is to remove the allocation of the memory before we actually
check for any errors.

378a7d1ef5 Bug #14036214 MYSQLD CRASHES WHEN EXECUTING UPDATE IN TRX WITH
CONSISTENT SNAPSHOT OPTION

A transaction is started with a consistent snapshot. After
the transaction is started new indexes are added to the
table. Now when we issue an update statement, the optimizer
chooses an index. When the index scan is being initialized
via ha_innobase::change_active_index(), InnoDB reports
the error code HA_ERR_TABLE_DEF_CHANGED, with message
stating that "insufficient history for index".

This error message is propagated up to the SQL layer. But
the my_error() api is never called. The statement level
diagnostics area is not updated with the correct error
status (it remains in Diagnostics_area::DA_EMPTY).

Hence the following check in the Protocol::end_statement()
fails.

 516   case Diagnostics_area::DA_EMPTY:
 517   default:
 518     DBUG_ASSERT(0);
 519     error= send_ok(thd->server_status, 0, 0, 0, NULL);
 520     break;

The fix is to backport the fix of bugs 14365043, 11761652
and 11746399.

14365043 PROTOCOL::END_STATEMENT(): ASSERTION `0' FAILED
11761652 HA_RND_INIT() RESULT CODE NOT CHECKED
11746399 RETURN VALUES OF HA_INDEX_INIT() AND INDEX_INIT() IGNORED

45a87c685b Bug #55424: convert_tz crashes when fed invalid data
The CONVERT_TZ function crashes the server when the
timezone argument is an empty SET field value.

1) The CONVERT_TZ may find a timezone string in the
   tz_names hash.
2) A string representation of the empty SET is a
   String of zero length with the NULL pointer.
3) If the key argument length is zero, hash functions
   do comparison using the length of the record being
   compared against.

I.e. a zero-length String buffer is an invalid
argument for hash search functions, and if String
points to NULL buffer, hashcmp() fails with SEGV
accessing that memory.

The my_tz_find function has been modified to
treat empty Strings as invalid timezone values
to skip unnecessary hash search.

36290c0923 A pre-requisite patch for the fix for Bug#52044.
This patch also fixes Bug#55452 "SET PASSWORD is
replicated twice in RBR mode".

The goal of this patch is to remove the release of
metadata locks from close_thread_tables().
This is necessary to not mistakenly release
the locks in the course of a multi-step
operation that involves multiple close_thread_tables()
or close_tables_for_reopen().

On the same token, move statement commit outside
close_thread_tables().

Other cleanups:
Cleanup COM_FIELD_LIST.
Don't call close_thread_tables() in COM_SHUTDOWN -- there
are no open tables there that can be closed (we leave
the locked tables mode in THD destructor, and this
close_thread_tables() won't leave it anyway).

Make open_and_lock_tables() and open_and_lock_tables_derived()
call close_thread_tables() upon failure.
Remove the calls to close_thread_tables() that are now
unnecessary.

Simplify the back off condition in Open_table_context.

Streamline metadata lock handling in LOCK TABLES
implementation.

Add asserts to ensure correct life cycle of
statement transaction in a session.

Remove a piece of dead code that has also become redundant
after the fix for Bug 37521.

mysql-test/r/variables.result:
  Update results: set @@autocommit and statement transaction/
  prelocked mode.
mysql-test/r/view.result:
  A harmless change in CHECK TABLE <view> status for a broken view.
  If previously a failure to prelock all functions used in a view
  would leave the connection in LTM_PRELOCKED mode, now we call
  close_thread_tables() from open_and_lock_tables()
  and leave prelocked mode, thus some check in mysql_admin_table() that
  works only in prelocked/locked tables mode is no longer activated.
mysql-test/suite/rpl/r/rpl_row_implicit_commit_binlog.result:
  Fixed Bug#55452 "SET PASSWORD is replicated twice in
  RBR mode": extra binlog events are gone from the
  binary log.
mysql-test/t/variables.test:
  Add a test case: set autocommit and statement transaction/prelocked
  mode.
sql/event_data_objects.cc:
  Simplify code in Event_job_data::execute().
  Move sp_head memory management to lex_end().
sql/event_db_repository.cc:
  Move the release of metadata locks outside
  close_thread_tables().
  Make sure we call close_thread_tables() when
  open_and_lock_tables() fails and remove extra
  code from the events data dictionary.
  Use close_mysql_tables(), a new internal
  function to properly close mysql.* tables
  in the data dictionary.
  Contract Event_db_repository::drop_events_by_field,
  drop_schema_events into one function.
  When dropping all events in a schema,
  make sure we don't mistakenly release all
  locks acquired by DROP DATABASE. These
  include locks on the database name
  and the global intention exclusive
  metadata lock.
sql/event_db_repository.h:
  Function open_event_table() does not require an instance
  of Event_db_repository.
sql/events.cc:
  Use close_mysql_tables() instead of close_thread_tables()
  to bootstrap events, since the latter no longer
  releases metadata locks.
sql/ha_ndbcluster.cc:
  - mysql_rm_table_part2 no longer releases
  acquired metadata locks. Do it in the caller.
sql/ha_ndbcluster_binlog.cc:
  Deploy the new protocol for closing thread
  tables in run_query() and ndb_binlog_index
  code.
sql/handler.cc:
  Assert that we never call ha_commit_trans/
  ha_rollback_trans in sub-statement, which
  is now the case.
sql/handler.h:
  Add an accessor to check whether THD_TRANS object
  is empty (has no transaction started).
sql/log.cc:
  Update a comment.
sql/log_event.cc:
  Since now we commit/rollback statement transaction in
  mysql_execute_command(), we need a mechanism to communicate
  from Query_log_event::do_apply_event() to mysql_execute_command()
  that the statement transaction should be rolled back, not committed.
  Ideally it would be a virtual method of THD. I hesitate
  to make THD a virtual base class in this already large patch.
  Use a thd->variables.option_bits for now.

  Remove a call to close_thread_tables() from the slave IO
  thread. It doesn't open any tables, and the protocol
  for closing thread tables is more complicated now.

  Make sure we properly close thread tables, however,
  in Load_data_log_event, which doesn't
  follow the standard server execution procedure
  with mysql_execute_command().
  @todo: this piece should use Server_runnable
  framework instead.
  Remove an unnecessary call to mysql_unlock_tables().
sql/rpl_rli.cc:
  Update Relay_log_info::slave_close_thread_tables()
  to follow the new close protocol.
sql/set_var.cc:
  Remove an unused header.
sql/slave.cc:
  Remove an unnecessary call to
  close_thread_tables().
sql/sp.cc:
  Remove unnecessary calls to close_thread_tables()
  from SP DDL implementation. The tables will
  be closed by the caller, in mysql_execute_command().
  When dropping all routines in a database, make sure
  to not mistakenly drop all metadata locks acquired
  so far, they include the scoped lock on the schema.
sql/sp_head.cc:
  Correct the protocol that closes thread tables
  in an SP instruction.
  Clear lex->sphead before cleaning up lex
  with lex_end to make sure that we don't
  delete the sphead twice. It's considered
  to be "cleaner" and more in line with
  future changes than calling delete lex->sphead
  in other places that cleanup the lex.
sql/sp_head.h:
  When destroying m_lex_keeper of an instruction,
  don't delete the sphead that all lex objects
  share.
  @todo: don't store a reference to routine's sp_head
  instance in instruction's lex.
sql/sql_acl.cc:
  Don't call close_thread_tables() where the caller will
  do that for us.
  Fix Bug#55452 "SET PASSWORD is replicated twice in RBR
  mode" by disabling RBR replication in change_password()
  function.
  Use close_mysql_tables() in bootstrap and ACL reload
  code to make sure we release all metadata locks.
sql/sql_base.cc:
  This is the main part of the patch:
  - remove manipulation with thd->transaction
  and thd->mdl_context from close_thread_tables().
  Now this function is only responsible for closing
  tables, nothing else.
  This is necessary to be able to easily use
  close_thread_tables() in procedures, that
  involve multiple open/close tables, which all
  need to be protected continuously by metadata
  locks.
  Add asserts ensuring that TABLE object
  is only used when is protected by a metadata lock.
  Simplify the back off condition of Open_table_context,
  we no longer need to look at the autocommit mode.
  Make open_and_lock_tables() and open_normal_and_derived_tables()
  close thread tables and release metadata locks acquired so-far
  upon failure. This simplifies their usage.
  Implement close_mysql_tables().
sql/sql_base.h:
  Add declaration for close_mysql_tables().
sql/sql_class.cc:
  Remove a piece of dead code that has also become redundant
  after the fix for Bug 37521.
  The code became dead when my_eof() was made a non-protocol method,
  but a method that merely modifies the diagnostics area.
  The code became redundant with the fix for Bug#37521, when
  we started to cal close_thread_tables() before
  Protocol::end_statement().
sql/sql_do.cc:
  Do nothing in DO if inside a substatement
  (the assert moved out of trans_rollback_stmt).
sql/sql_handler.cc:
  Add comments.
sql/sql_insert.cc:
  Remove dead code.
  Release metadata locks explicitly at the
  end of the delayed insert thread.
sql/sql_lex.cc:
  Add destruction of lex->sphead to lex_end(),
  lex "reset" method called at the end of each statement.
sql/sql_parse.cc:
  Move close_thread_tables() and other related
  cleanups to mysql_execute_command()
  from dispatch_command(). This has become
  possible after the fix for Bug#37521.
  Mark federated SERVER statements as DDL.

  Next step: make sure that we don't store
  eof packet in the query cache, and move
  the query cache code outside mysql_parse.

  Brush up the code of COM_FIELD_LIST.
  Remove unnecessary calls to close_thread_tables().

  When killing a query, don't report "OK"
  if it was a suicide.
sql/sql_parse.h:
  Remove declaration of a function that is now static.
sql/sql_partition.cc:
  Remove an unnecessary call to close_thread_tables().
sql/sql_plugin.cc:
  open_and_lock_tables() will clean up
  after itself after a failure.
  Move close_thread_tables() above
  end: label, and replace with close_mysql_tables(),
  which will also release the metadata lock
  on mysql.plugin.
sql/sql_prepare.cc:
  Now that we no longer release locks in close_thread_tables()
  statement prepare code has become more straightforward.
  Remove the now redundant check for thd->killed() (used
  only by the backup project) from Execute_server_runnable.
  Reorder code to take into account that now mysql_execute_command()
  performs lex->unit.cleanup() and close_thread_tables().
sql/sql_priv.h:
  Add a new option to server options to interact
  between the slave SQL thread and execution
  framework (hack). @todo: use a virtual
  method of class THD instead.
sql/sql_servers.cc:
  Due to Bug 25705 replication of
  DROP/CREATE/ALTER SERVER is broken.
  Make sure at least we do not attempt to
  replicate these statements using RBR,
  as this violates the assert in close_mysql_tables().
sql/sql_table.cc:
  Do not release metadata locks in mysql_rm_table_part2,
  this is done by the caller.
  Do not call close_thread_tables() in mysql_create_table(),
  this is done by the caller.
  Fix a bug in DROP TABLE under LOCK TABLES when,
  upon error in wait_while_table_is_used() we would mistakenly
  release the metadata lock on a non-dropped table.
  Explicitly release metadata locks when doing an implicit
  commit.
sql/sql_trigger.cc:
  Now that we delete lex->sphead in lex_end(),
  zero the trigger's sphead in lex after loading
  the trigger, to avoid double deletion.
sql/sql_udf.cc:
  Use close_mysql_tables() instead of close_thread_tables().
sql/sys_vars.cc:
  Remove code added in scope of WL#4284 which would
  break when we perform set @@session.autocommit along
  with setting other variables and using tables or functions.
  A test case added to variables.test.
sql/transaction.cc:
  Add asserts.
sql/tztime.cc:
  Use close_mysql_tables() rather than close_thread_tables().

33c57e2f9e WL#5419 "LOCK_open scalability: make tdc_refresh_version
an atomic counter"

Split the large LOCK_open section in open_table().
Do not call open_table_from_share() under LOCK_open.
Remove thd->version.

This fixes
Bug#50589 "Server hang on a query evaluated using a temporary
table"
Bug#51557 "LOCK_open and kernel_mutex are not happy together"
Bug#49463 "LOCK_table and innodb are not nice when handler
instances are created".

This patch has effect on storage engines that rely on
ha_open() PSEA method being called under LOCK_open.
In particular:

1) NDB is broken and left unfixed. NDB relies on LOCK_open
being kept as part of ha_open(), since it uses auto-discovery.
While previously the NDB open code was race-prone, now
it simply fails on asserts.

2) HEAP engine had a race in ha_heap::open() when
a share for the same table could be added twice
to the list of shares, or a dangling reference to a share
stored in HEAP handler. This patch aims to address this
problem by 'pinning' the newly created share in the
internal HEAP engine share list until at least one
handler instance is created using that share.

include/heap.h:
  Add members to HP_CREATE_INFO.
  Declare heap_release_share().
sql/lock.cc:
  Remove thd->version, use thd->open_tables->s->version instead.
sql/repl_failsafe.cc:
  Remove thd->version.
sql/sql_base.cc:
  - close_thread_table(): move handler cleanup code outside the critical section protected by LOCK_open.
  - remove thd->version
  - split the large critical section in open_table() that
  opens a new table from share and is protected by LOCK_open
  into 2 critical sections, thus reducing the critical path.
  - make check_if_table_exists() acquire LOCK_open internally.
  - use thd->open_tables->s->version instead of thd->refresh_version to make sure that all tables in
  thd->open_tables are in the same refresh series.
sql/sql_base.h:
  Add declaration for check_if_table_exists().
sql/sql_class.cc:
  Remove init_open_tables_state(), it's now equal to
  reset_open_tables_state().
sql/sql_class.h:
  Remove thd->version, THD::init_open_tables_state().
sql/sql_plugin.cc:
  Use table->m_needs_reopen to mark the table as stale
  rather than manipulate with thd->version, which is no more.
sql/sql_udf.cc:
  Use table->m_needs_reopen to mark the table as stale
  rather than manipulate with thd->version, which is no more.
sql/table.h:
  Remove an unused variable.
sql/tztime.cc:
  Use table->m_needs_reopen to mark the table as stale
  rather than manipulate with thd->version, which is no more.
storage/heap/CMakeLists.txt:
  Add heap tests to cmake build files.
storage/heap/ha_heap.cc:
  Fix a race when ha_heap::ha_open() could insert two
  HP_SHARE objects into the internal share list or store
  a dangling reference to a share in ha_heap instance,
  or wrongly set implicit_emptied.
storage/heap/hp_create.c:
  Optionally pin a newly created share in the list of shares
  by increasing its open_count. This is necessary to
  make sure that a newly created share doesn't disappear while
  a HP_INFO object is being created to reference it.
storage/heap/hp_open.c:
  When adding a new HP_INFO object to the list of objects
  in the heap share, make sure the open_count is not increased
  twice.
storage/heap/hp_test1.c:
  Adjust the test to new function signatures.
storage/heap/hp_test2.c:
  Adjust the test to new function signatures.

09b7a0d115 A post-review fix for type-aware metadata locks.
DDL no longer aborts mysql_lock_tables(), and hence
we no longer need to support need_reopen flag of this
call.
Remove the flag, and all the code in the server
that was responsible for handling the case when
it was set. This allowed to simplify:
open_and_lock_tables_derived(), the delayed thread,
multi-update.

Rename MYSQL_LOCK_IGNORE_FLUSH to MYSQL_OPEN_IGNORE_FLUSH,
since we now only support this flag in open_table().

Rename MYSQL_LOCK_PERF_SCHEMA to MYSQL_LOCK_LOG_TABLE,
to avoid confusion.

Move the wait for the global read lock for cases
when we do updates in SELECT f1() or DO (UPDATE) to
open_table() from mysql_lock_tables(). When waiting
for the read lock, we could raise need_reopen flag,
which is no longer present in mysql_lock_tables().
Since the block responsible for waiting for GRL
was moved, MYSQL_LOCK_IGNORE_GLOBAL_READ_LOCK
was renamed to MYSQL_OPEN_IGNORE_GLOBAL_READ_LOCK.

mysql-test/r/mdl_sync.result:
  Update test results (see comments for mdl_sync.test).
mysql-test/t/mdl_sync.test:
  Update tests: an abort mysql_lock_tables() called for an
  INSERT no longer auto-closes SQL HANDLERS, since it
  no longer leads to back-off and retry.
sql/ha_ndbcluster_binlog.cc:
  Remove unused variables.
sql/lock.cc:
  Remove support for need_reopen parameter of mysql_lock_tables().
  Update comments.
sql/log_event_old.cc:
  Remove the loop responsible for handling need_reopen
  out parameter of mysql_lock_tables().
sql/mysql_priv.h:
  Update open and lock tables flag names.
sql/share/errmsg-utf8.txt:
  Add a new error message to report when
  thr_multi_lock() is aborted.
sql/sql_base.cc:
  Update comments. Rename MYSQL_LOCK_IGNORE_FLUSH
  to MYSQL_OPEN_IGNORE_FLUSH.
sql/sql_class.h:
  Remove unused code.
sql/sql_db.cc:
  Remove an unused bit of code.
sql/sql_handler.cc:
  For backward compatibility, we still want to back off and
  retry when a call to mysql_lock_tables() is aborted
  from within an SQL HANDLER. Write an internal error
  handler to support the case.
sql/sql_insert.cc:
  Call mysql_lock_tables() no longer has need_reopen
  out parameter. Simplify the code by removing
  the crud that took care of it.
  MYSQL_LOCK_IGNORE_FLUSH is now only supported by
  open_tables().
sql/sql_show.cc:
  Rename MYSQL_LOCK_IGNORE_FLUSH to MYSQL_OPEN_IGNORE_FLUSH
sql/sql_table.cc:
  Remove an unused parameter.
sql/sql_update.cc:
  Remove the need_reopen loop from multi-update.
  We no also longer need to cleanup the parse tree in case
  when mysql_lock_tables() is aborted and thus an infinite
  source of multi-update bugs is gone.
sql/tztime.cc:
  Rename MYSQL_LOCK_IGNORE_FLUSH to MYSQL_OPEN_IGNORE_FLUSH,
  since from now on this flag is only supported by open_table().

e60ef89317 Followup to Bug#45225 Locking: hang if drop table with no timeout
This patch prevents system threads and system table accesses from
using user-specified values for "lock_wait_timeout". Instead all
such accesses are done using the default value (1 year).

This prevents background tasks (such as replication, events,
accessing stored function definitions, logging, reading time-zone
information, etc.) from failing in cases where the global value
of "lock_wait_timeout" is set very low.

The patch also simplifies the open tables API. Rather than adding
another convenience function for opening and locking system tables,
this patch removes most of the existing convenience functions for
open_and_lock_tables_derived(). Before, open_and_lock_tables() was
a convenience function that enforced derived tables handling, while
open_and_lock_tables_derived() was the main function where derived
tables handling was optional. Now, this convencience function is
gone and the main function is renamed to open_and_lock_tables().

No test case added as it would have required the use of --sleep to
check that system threads and system tables have a different timeout
value from the user-specified "lock_wait_timeout" system variable.

6ddd01c27a Patch that changes metadata locking subsystem to use mutex per lock and
condition variable per context instead of one mutex and one conditional
variable for the whole subsystem.

This should increase concurrency in this subsystem.

It also opens the way for further changes which are necessary to solve
such bugs as bug #46272 "MySQL 5.4.4, new MDL: unnecessary deadlock"
and bug #37346 "innodb does not detect deadlock between update and alter
table".

Two other notable changes done by this patch:

- MDL subsystem no longer implicitly acquires global intention exclusive
  metadata lock when per-object metadata lock is acquired. Now this has
  to be done by explicit calls outside of MDL subsystem.
- Instead of using separate MDL_context for opening system tables/tables
  for purposes of I_S we now create MDL savepoint in the main context
  before opening tables and rollback to this savepoint after closing
  them. This means that it is now possible to get ER_LOCK_DEADLOCK error
  even not inside a transaction. This might happen in unlikely case when
  one runs DDL on one of system tables while also running DDL on some
  other tables. Cases when this ER_LOCK_DEADLOCK error is not justified
  will be addressed by advanced deadlock detector for MDL subsystem which
  we plan to implement.

mysql-test/include/handler.inc:
  Adjusted handler_myisam.test and handler_innodb.test to the fact that
  exclusive metadata locks on tables are now acquired according to
  alphabetical order of fully qualified table names instead of order
  in which tables are mentioned in statement.
mysql-test/r/handler_innodb.result:
  Adjusted handler_myisam.test and handler_innodb.test to the fact that
  exclusive metadata locks on tables are now acquired according to
  alphabetical order of fully qualified table names instead of order
  in which tables are mentioned in statement.
mysql-test/r/handler_myisam.result:
  Adjusted handler_myisam.test and handler_innodb.test to the fact that
  exclusive metadata locks on tables are now acquired according to
  alphabetical order of fully qualified table names instead of order
  in which tables are mentioned in statement.
mysql-test/r/mdl_sync.result:
  Adjusted mdl_sync.test to the fact that exclusive metadata locks on
  tables are now acquired according to alphabetical order of fully
  qualified table names instead of order in which tables are mentioned
  in statement.
mysql-test/t/mdl_sync.test:
  Adjusted mdl_sync.test to the fact that exclusive metadata locks on
  tables are now acquired according to alphabetical order of fully
  qualified table names instead of order in which tables are mentioned
  in statement.
sql/events.cc:
  Instead of using separate MDL_context for opening system tables we now
  create MDL savepoint in the main context before opening such tables
  and rollback to this savepoint after closing them. To support this
  change methods of THD responsible for saving/restoring open table
  state were changed to use Open_tables_backup class which in addition
  to Open_table_state has a member for this savepoint. As result code
  opening/closing system tables was changed to use Open_tables_backup
  instead of Open_table_state class as well.
sql/ha_ndbcluster.cc:
  Since manipulations with open table state no longer install proxy
  MDL_context it does not make sense to perform them in order to
  satisfy assert in mysql_rm_tables_part2(). Removed them per agreement
  with Cluster team. This has not broken test suite since scenario in
  which deadlock can occur and assertion fails is not covered by tests.
sql/lock.cc:
  MDL subsystem no longer implicitly acquires global intention exclusive
  metadata lock when per-object exclusive metadata lock is acquired.
  Now this has to be done by explicit calls outside of MDL subsystem.
sql/log.cc:
  Instead of using separate MDL_context for opening system tables we now
  create MDL savepoint in the main context before opening such tables
  and rollback to this savepoint after closing them. To support this
  change methods of THD responsible for saving/restoring open table
  state were changed to use Open_tables_backup class which in addition
  to Open_table_state has a member for this savepoint. As result code
  opening/closing system tables was changed to use Open_tables_backup
  instead of Open_table_state class as well.
sql/mdl.cc:
  Changed metadata locking subsystem to use mutex per lock and condition
  variable per context instead of one mutex and one conditional variable
  for the whole subsystem.
  Changed approach to handling of global metadata locks. Instead of
  implicitly acquiring intention exclusive locks when user requests
  per-object upgradeable or exclusive locks now we require them to be
  acquired explicitly in the same way as ordinary metadata locks.
  In fact global lock are now ordinary metadata locks in new GLOBAL
  namespace.

  To implement these changes:
  - Removed LOCK_mdl mutex and COND_mdl condition variable.
  - Introduced MDL_lock::m_mutex mutexes which protect individual lock
    objects.
  - Replaced mdl_locks hash with MDL_map class, which has hash for
    MDL_lock objects as a member and separate mutex which protects this
    hash. Methods of this class allow to find(), find_or_create() or
    remove() MDL_lock objects in concurrency-friendly fashion (i.e.
    for most common operation, find_or_create(), we don't acquire
    MDL_lock::m_mutex while holding MDL_map::m_mutex. Thanks to MikaelR
    for this idea and benchmarks!). Added three auxiliary members to
    MDL_lock class (m_is_destroyed, m_ref_usage, m_ref_release) to
    support this concurrency-friendly behavior.
  - Introduced MDL_context::m_ctx_wakeup_cond condition variable to be
    used for waiting until this context's pending request can be
    satisfied or its thread has to perform actions to resolve potential
    deadlock. Context which want to wait add ticket corresponding to the
    request to an appropriate queue of waiters in MDL_lock object so
    they can be noticed when other contexts change state of lock and be
    awaken by them by signalling on MDL_context::m_ctx_wakeup_cond.
    As consequence MDL_ticket objects has to be used for any waiting
    in metadata locking subsystem including one which happens in
    MDL_context::wait_for_locks() method.
    Another consequence is that MDL_context is no longer copyable and
    can't be saved/restored when working with system tables.
  - Made MDL_lock an abstract class, which delegates specifying exact
    compatibility matrix to its descendants. Added MDL_global_lock child
    class for global lock (The old is_lock_type_compatible() method
    became can_grant_lock() method of this class). Added MDL_object_lock
    class to represent per-object lock (The old MDL_lock::can_grant_lock()
    became its method). Choice between two classes happens based on MDL
    namespace in MDL_lock::create() method.
  - Got rid of MDL_lock::type member as its meaning became ambigous for
    global locks.
  - To simplify waking up of contexts waiting for lock split waiting queue
    in MDL_lock class in two queues. One for pending requests for exclusive
    (including intention exclusive) locks and another for requests for
    shared locks.
  - Added virtual wake_up_waiters() method to MDL_lock, MDL_global_lock and
    MDL_object_lock classes which allows to wake up waiting contexts after
    state of lock changes. Replaced old duplicated code with calls to this
    method.
  - Adjusted MDL_context::try_acquire_shared_lock()/exclusive_lock()/
    global_shared_lock(), MDL_ticket::upgrade_shared_lock_to_exclusive_lock()
    and MDL_context::release_ticket() methods to use MDL_map and
    MDL_lock::m_mutex instead of single LOCK_mdl mutex and wake up
    waiters according to the approach described above. The latter method
    also was renamed to MDL_context::release_lock().
  - Changed MDL_context::try_acquire_shared_lock()/exclusive_lock() and
    release_lock() not to handle global locks. They are now supposed to
    be taken explicitly like ordinary metadata locks.
  - Added helper MDL_context::try_acquire_global_intention_exclusive_lock()
    and acquire_global_intention_exclusive_lock() methods.
  - Moved common code from MDL_context::acquire_global_shared_lock() and
    acquire_global_intention_exclusive_lock() to new method -
    MDL_context::acquire_lock_impl().
  - Moved common code from MDL_context::try_acquire_shared_lock(),
    try_acquire_global_intention_exclusive_lock()/exclusive_lock()
    to MDL_context::try_acquire_lock_impl().
  - Since acquiring of several exclusive locks can no longer happen under
    single LOCK_mdl mutex the approach to it had to be changed. Now we do
    it in one by one fashion. This is done in alphabetical order to avoid
    deadlocks. Changed MDL_context::acquire_exclusive_locks() accordingly
    (as part of this change moved code responsible for acquiring single
    exclusive lock to new MDL_context::acquire_exclusive_lock_impl()
    method).
  - Since we no longer have single LOCK_mdl mutex which protects all
    MDL_context::m_is_waiting_in_mdl members using these members to
    determine if we have really awaken context holding conflicting
    shared lock became inconvinient. Got rid of this member and changed
    notify_shared_lock() helper function and process of acquiring
    of/upgrading to exclusive lock not to rely on such information.
    Now in MDL_context::acquire_exclusive_lock_impl() and
    MDL_ticket::upgrade_shared_lock_to_exclusive_lock() we simply
    re-try to wake up threads holding conflicting shared locks after
    small time out.
  - Adjusted MDL_context::can_wait_lead_to_deadlock() and
    MDL_ticket::has_pending_conflicting_lock() to use per-lock
    mutexes instead of LOCK_mdl. To do this introduced
    MDL_lock::has_pending_exclusive_lock() method.
sql/mdl.h:
  Changed metadata locking subsystem to use mutex per lock and condition
  variable per context instead of one mutex and one conditional variable
  for the whole subsystem. In order to implement this change:

  - Added MDL_key::cmp() method to be able to sort MDL_key objects
    alphabetically. Changed length fields in MDL_key class to uint16
    as 16-bit is enough for length of any key.
  - Changed MDL_ticket::get_ctx() to return pointer to non-const
    object in order to be able to use MDL_context::awake() method
    for such contexts.
  - Got rid of unlocked versions of can_wait_lead_to_deadlock()/
    has_pending_conflicting_lock() methods in MDL_context and
    MDL_ticket. We no longer has single mutex which protects all
    locks. Thus one always has to use versions of these methods
    which acquire per-lock mutexes.
  - MDL_request_list type of list now counts its elements.
  - Added MDL_context::m_ctx_wakeup_cond condition variable to be used
    for waiting until this context's pending request can be satisfied
    or its thread has to perform actions to resolve potential deadlock.
    Added awake() method to wake up context from such wait.
    Addition of condition variable made MDL_context uncopyable.
    As result we no longer can save/restore MDL_context when working
    with system tables. Instead we create MDL savepoint before opening
    those tables and rollback to it once they are closed.
  - MDL_context::release_ticket() became release_lock() method.
  - Added auxiliary MDL_context::acquire_exclusive_lock_impl() method
    which does all necessary work to acquire exclusive lock on one object
    but should not be used directly as it does not enforce any asserts
    ensuring that no deadlocks are possible.
  - Since we no longer need to know if thread trying to acquire exclusive
    lock managed to wake up any threads having conflicting shared locks
    (as, anyway, we will try to wake up such threads again shortly)
  - MDL_context::m_is_waiting_in_mdl member became unnecessary and
    notify_shared_lock() no longer needs to be friend of MDL_context.

  Changed approach to handling of global metadata locks. Instead of
  implicitly acquiring intention exclusive locks when user requests
  per-object upgradeable or exclusive locks now we require them to be
  acquired explicitly in the same way as ordinary metadata locks.

  - Added new GLOBAL namespace for such locks.
  - Added new type of lock to be requested MDL_INTENTION_EXCLISIVE.
  - Added MDL_context::try_acquire_global_intention_exclusive_lock()
    and acquire_global_intention_exclusive_lock() methods.
  - Moved common code from MDL_context::acquire_global_shared_lock()
    and acquire_global_intention_exclusive_lock() to new method -
    MDL_context::acquire_lock_impl().
  - Moved common code from MDL_context::try_acquire_shared_lock(),
    try_acquire_global_intention_exclusive_lock()/exclusive_lock()
    to MDL_context::try_acquire_lock_impl().
  - Added helper MDL_context::is_global_lock_owner() method to be
    able easily to find what kind of global lock this context holds.
  - MDL_context::m_has_global_shared_lock became unnecessary as
    global read lock is now represented by ordinary ticket.
  - Removed assert in MDL_context::set_lt_or_ha_sentinel() which became
    false for cases when we execute LOCK TABLES under global read lock
    mode.

message:
  WL#4284 "Transactional DDL locking"
  A review fix.
  Since WL#4284 implementation separated MDL_request and MDL_ticket,
  MDL_request becamse a utility object necessary only to get a ticket.
  Store it by-value in TABLE_LIST with the intent to merge
  MDL_request::key with table_list->table_name and table_list->db
  in future.
  Change the MDL subsystem to not require MDL_requests to
  stay around till close_thread_tables().
  Remove the list of requests from the MDL context.
  Requests for shared metadata locks acquired in open_tables()
  are only used as a list in recover_from_failed_open_table_attempt(),
  which calls mdl_context.wait_for_locks() for this list.
  To keep such list for recover_from_failed_open_table_attempt(),
  introduce a context class (Open_table_context), that collects
  all requests.
  A lot of minor cleanups and simplications that became possible
  with this change.

sql/event_db_repository.cc:
  Remove alloc_mdl_requests(). Now MDL_request instance is a member
  of TABLE_LIST, and init_one_table() initializes it.
sql/ha_ndbcluster_binlog.cc:
  Remove now unnecessary declaration and initialization
  of binlog_mdl_request.
sql/lock.cc:
  No need to allocate MDL requests in lock_table_names() now.
sql/log.cc:
  Use init_one_table() method, remove alloc_mdl_requests(),
  which is now unnecessary.
sql/log_event.cc:
  No need to allocate mdl_request separately now.
  Use init_one_table() method.
sql/log_event_old.cc:
  Update to the new signature of close_tables_for_reopen().
sql/mdl.cc:
  Update try_acquire_exclusive_lock() to be more easy to use.
  Function lock_table_name_if_not_cached() has been removed.
  Make acquire_shared_lock() signature consistent with
  try_acquire_exclusive_lock() signature.
  Remove methods that are no longer used.
  Update comments.
sql/mdl.h:
  Implement an assignment operator that doesn't
  copy MDL_key (MDL_key::operator= is private and
  should remain private).
  This is a hack to work-around assignment of TABLE_LIST
  by value in several places. Such assignments violate
  encapsulation, since only perform a shallow copy.
  In most cases these assignments are a hack on their own.
sql/mysql_priv.h:
  Update signatures of close_thread_tables() and close_tables_for_reopen().
sql/sp.cc:
  Allocate TABLE_LIST in thd->mem_root.
  Use init_one_table().
sql/sp_head.cc:
  Use init_one_table().
  Remove thd->locked_tables_root, it's no longer needed.
sql/sql_acl.cc:
  Use init_mdl_requests() and init_one_table().
sql/sql_base.cc:
  Update to new signatures of try_acquire_shared_lock() and
  try_acquire_exclusive_lock().
  Remove lock_table_name_if_not_cached().
  Fix a bug in open_ltable() that would not return ER_LOCK_DEADLOCK
  in case of a failed lock_tables() and a multi-statement
  transaction.
  Fix a bug in open_and_lock_tables_derived() that would
  not return ER_LOCK_DEADLOCK in case of a multi-statement
  transaction and a failure of lock_tables().
  Move assignment of enum_open_table_action to a method of Open_table_context, a new class that maintains information
  for backoff actions.
  Minor rearrangements of the code.
  Remove alloc_mdl_requests() in functions that work with system
  tables: instead the patch ensures that callers always initialize
  TABLE_LIST argument.
sql/sql_class.cc:
  THD::locked_tables_root is no more.
sql/sql_class.h:
  THD::locked_tables_root is no more.
  Add a declaration for Open_table_context class.
sql/sql_delete.cc:
  Update to use the simplified MDL API.
sql/sql_handler.cc:
  TABLE_LIST::mdl_request is stored by-value now.
  Ensure that mdl_request.ticket is NULL for every request
  that is passed into MDL, to satisfy MDL asserts.
  @ sql/sql_help.cc
  Function open_system_tables_for_read() no longer initializes
  mdl_requests.
  Move TABLE_LIST::mdl_request initialization closer to
  TABLE_LIST initialization.
sql/sql_help.cc:
  Function open_system_tables_for_read() no longer initializes
  mdl_requests.
  Move TABLE_LIST::mdl_request initialization closer to
  TABLE_LIST initialization.
sql/sql_insert.cc:
  Remove assignment by-value of TABLE_LIST in
  TABLEOP_HOOKS. We can't carry over a granted
  MDL ticket from one table list to another.
sql/sql_parse.cc:
  Change alloc_mdl_requests() -> init_mdl_requests().
  @todo We can remove init_mdl_requests() altogether
  in some places: all places that call add_table_to_list()
  already have mdl requests initialized.
sql/sql_plugin.cc:
  Use init_one_table().
  THD::locked_tables_root is no more.
sql/sql_servers.cc:
  Use init_one_table().
sql/sql_show.cc:
  Update acquire_high_priority_shared_lock() to use
  TABLE_LIST::mdl_request rather than allocate an own.
  Fix get_trigger_table_impl() to use init_one_table(),
  check for out of memory, follow the coding style.
sql/sql_table.cc:
  Update to work with TABLE_LIST::mdl_request by-value.
  Remove lock_table_name_if_not_cached().
  The code that used to delegate to it is quite simple and
  concise without it now.
sql/sql_udf.cc:
  Use init_one_table().
sql/sql_update.cc:
  Update to use the new signature of close_tables_for_reopen().
sql/table.cc:
  Move re-setting of mdl_requests for prepared statements
  and stored procedures from close_thread_tables() to
  reinit_stmt_before_use().
  Change alloc_mdl_requests() to init_mdl_requests().
  init_mdl_requests() is a hack that can't be deleted
  until we don't have a list-aware TABLE_LIST constructor.
  Hopefully its use will be minimal

  Bug#32082 : definition of VOID in my_global.h conflicts with Windows
  SDK headers

  VOID macro is now removed. Its usage is replaced with void cast.
  In some cases, where cast does not make much sense (pthread_*, printf,
  hash_delete, my_seek), cast is ommited.

Bug#32115 will remove the pre-requisite to initialize LEX to open tables.
This dependency was added in 5.1 and was supposed to be removed in 6.0.
Remove asserts and initialization of LEX in places where we don't deal
with partitioned tables.

  Bug#15192 "fatal errors" are caught by handlers in stored procedures

  The problem is that fatal errors (e.g.: out of memory) were being
  caught by stored procedure exception handlers which could cause
  the execution to not be stopped due to a continue handler.

  The solution is to not call any exception handler if the error is
  fatal and send the fatal error to the client.

28f4090bda Bug #42502 huge memory leak possible with timezone
functions

Unknown timezone specifications are properly rejected
by the server, but are copied into tz_storage before
rejection, and hence is retained until end of server
life. With sufficiently large bogus timezone specs,
it is easy to exhaust system memory.

Allocation of memory for a copy of the timezone
name is delayed until after verification of validity,
at the cost of a memcpy of the timezone info. This
only happens once, future lookups will hit the cached
structure.

f56e43ce52 Bug #39920: MySQL cannot deal with Leap Second expression in string literal.
Updated MySQL time handling code to react correctly on UTC leap second additions.
MySQL functions that return the OS current time, like e.g. CURDATE(), NOW() etc
will return :59:59 instead of :59:60 or 59:61.
As a result the reader will receive :59:59 for 2 or 3 consecutive seconds
during the leap second.
This fix will not affect the values returned by UNIX_TIMESTAMP() for leap seconds.
But note that when converting the value returned by UNIX_TIMESTAMP() to broken
down time the correction of leap seconds will still be applied.
Note that this fix will make a difference *only* if the OS is specially configured
to return leap seconds from the OS time calls or when using a MySQL time zone
defintion that has leap seconds.
Even after this change date/time literals (or other broken down time
representations) with leap seconds (ending on :59:60 or 59:61) will still be
considered illegal and discarded by the server with an error or
a warning depending on the sql mode.
Added a test case to demonstrate the effect of the fix.

2a0d2fef51 Bug#12713 "Error in a stored function called from a SELECT doesn't
cause ROLLBACK of statement", part 1. Review fixes.

Do not send OK/EOF packets to the client until we reached the end of
the current statement.
This is a consolidation, to keep the functionality that is shared by all
SQL statements in one place in the server.
Currently this functionality includes:
- close_thread_tables()
- log_slow_statement().

After this patch and the subsequent patch for Bug#12713, it shall also include:
- ha_autocommit_or_rollback()
- net_end_statement()
- query_cache_end_of_result().

In future it may also include:
- mysql_reset_thd_for_next_command().

include/mysql_com.h:
  Rename now unused members of NET: no_send_ok, no_send_error, report_error.
  These were server-specific variables related to the client/server
  protocol. They have been made obsolete by this patch.

  Previously the same members of NET were used to store the error message
  both on the client and on the server.
  The error message was stored in net.last_error (client: mysql->net.last_error,
  server: thd->net.last_error).
  The error code was stored in net.last_errno (client: mysql->net.last_errno,
  server: thd->net.last_errno).
  The server error code and message are now stored elsewhere
  (in the Diagnostics_area), thus NET members are no longer used by the
  server.
  Rename last_error to client_last_error, last_errno to client_last_errno
  to avoid potential bugs introduced by merges.
include/mysql_h.ic:
  Update the ABI file to reflect a rename.
  Renames do not break the binary compatibility.
libmysql/libmysql.c:
  Rename last_error to client_last_error, last_errno to client_last_errno.
  This is necessary to ensure no unnoticed bugs introduced by merged
  changesets.

  Remove net.report_error, net.no_send_ok, net.no_send_error.
libmysql/manager.c:
  Rename net.last_errno to net.client_last_errno.
libmysqld/lib_sql.cc:
  Rename net.last_errno to net.client_last_errno.

  Update the embedded implementation of the client-server protocol to
  reflect the refactoring of protocol.cc.
libmysqld/libmysqld.c:
  Rename net.last_errno to net.client_last_errno.
mysql-test/r/events.result:
  Update to reflect the change in mysql_rm_db(). Now we drop stored
  routines and events for a given database name only if there
  is a directory for this database name. ha_drop_database() and
  query_cache_invalidate() are called likewise.
  Previously we would attempt to drop routines/events even if database
  directory was not found (it worked, since routines and events are stored
  in tables). This fixes Bug 29958 "Weird message on DROP DATABASE if mysql.proc
  does not exist".
  The change was done because the previous code used to call send_ok()
  twice, which led to an assertion failure when asserts against it were
  added by this patch.
mysql-test/r/grant.result:
  Fix the patch for Bug 16470, now FLUSH PRIVILEGES produces an error
  if mysql.procs_priv is missing.
  This fixes the assert that send_ok() must not called after send_error()
  (the original patch for Bug 16470 was prone to this).
mysql-test/suite/rpl/r/rpl_row_tabledefs_2myisam.result:
  Produce a more detailed error message.
mysql-test/suite/rpl/r/rpl_row_tabledefs_3innodb.result:
  Produce a more detailed error message.
mysql-test/t/grant.test:
  Update the test, now FLUSH PRIVILEGES returns an error if mysql.procs_priv
  is missing.
server-tools/instance-manager/mysql_connection.cc:
  Rename net.last_errno to net.client_last_errno.
sql/ha_ndbcluster_binlog.cc:
  Add asserts.

  Use getters to access statement status information.

  Add a comment why run_query() is broken. Reset the diagnostics area
  in the end of run_query() to fulfill the invariant that the diagnostics_area
  is never assigned twice per statement (see the comment in the code
  when this can happen). We still do not clear thd->is_fatal_error and
  thd->is_slave_error, which may lead to bugs, I consider the whole affair
  as something to be dealt with separately.
sql/ha_partition.cc:
  fatal_error() doesn't set an error by itself. Perhaps we should
  remove this method altogether and instead add a flag to my_error
  to set thd->is_fatal_error property.

  Meanwhile, this change is a part of inspection made to the entire source
  code with the goal to ensure that fatal_error()
  is always accompanied by my_error().
sql/item_func.cc:
  There is no net.last_error anymore. Remove the obsolete assignment.
sql/log_event.cc:
  Use getters to access statement error status information.
sql/log_event_old.cc:
  Use getters to access statement error status information.
sql/mysqld.cc:
  Previously, if a continue handler for an error was found, my_message_sql()
  would not set an error in THD. Since the current statement
  must be aborted in any case, find_handler() had a hack to assign
  thd->net.report_error to 1.

  Remove this hack. Set an error in my_message_sql() even if the continue
  handler is found. The error will be cleared anyway when the handler
  is executed. This is one action among many in this patch to ensure the
  invariant that whenever thd->is_error() is TRUE, we have a message in
  thd->main_da.message().
sql/net_serv.cc:
  Use a full-blown my_error() in net_serv.cc to report an error,
  instead of just setting net->last_errno. This ensures the invariant that
  whenever thd->is_error() returns TRUE, we have a message in
  thd->main_da.message().

  Remove initialization of removed NET members.
sql/opt_range.cc:
  Use my_error() instead of just raising thd->net.report_error.
  This ensures the invariant that whenever thd->is_error() returns TRUE,
  there is a message in thd->main_da.message().
sql/opt_sum.cc:
  Move invocation of fatal_error() right next to the place where
  we set the error message. That makes it easier to track that whenever
  fatal_error() is called, there is a message in THD.
sql/protocol.cc:
  Rename send_ok() and send_eof() to net_send_ok() and net_send_eof()
  respectively. These functions write directly to the network and are not
  for use anywhere outside the client/server protocol code.

  Remove the code that was responsible for cases when either there is
  no error code, or no error message, or both.
  Instead the calling code ensures that they are always present. Asserts
  are added to enforce the invariant.

  Instead of a direct access to thd->server_status and thd->total_warn_count
  use function parameters, since these from now on don't always come directly
  from THD.

  Introduce net_end_statement(), the single-entry-point replacement API for
  send_ok(), send_eof() and net_send_error().

  Implement Protocol::end_partial_result_set to use in select_send::abort()
  when there is a continue handler.
sql/protocol.h:
  Update declarations.
sql/repl_failsafe.cc:
  Use getters to access statement status information in THD.
  Rename net.last_error to net.client_last_error.
sql/rpl_record.cc:
  Set an error message in prepare_record() if there is no default
  value for the field -- later we do print this message to the client.
sql/rpl_rli.cc:
  Use getters to access statement status information in THD.
sql/slave.cc:
  In create_table_from_dump() (a common function that is used in
  LOAD MASTER TABLE SQL statement and COM_LOAD_MASTER_DATA), instead of hacks
  with no_send_ok, clear the diagnostics area when mysql_rm_table() succeeded.

  Update has_temporary_error() to work correctly when no error is set.
  This is the case when Incident_log_event is executed: it always returns
  an error but does not set an error message.

  Use getters to access error status information.
sql/sp_head.cc:
  Instead of hacks with no_send_error, work through the diagnostics area
  interface to suppress sending of OK/ERROR packets to the client.

  Move query_cache_end_of_result before log_slow_statement(), similarly
  to how it's done in dispatch_command().
sql/sp_rcontext.cc:
  Remove hacks with assignment of thd->net.report_error, they are not
  necessary any more (see the changes in mysqld.cc).
sql/sql_acl.cc:
  Use getters to access error status information in THD.
sql/sql_base.cc:
  Access thd->main_da.sql_errno() only if there is an error. This fixes
  a bug when auto-discovery, that was effectively disabled under pre-locking.
sql/sql_binlog.cc:
  Remove hacks with no_send_ok/no_send_error, they are not necessary
  anymore: the caller is responsible for network communication.
sql/sql_cache.cc:
  Disable sending of OK/ERROR/EOF packet in the end of dispatch_command
  if the response has been served from the query cache. This raises the
  question whether we should store EOF packet in the query cache at all,
  or generate it anew for each statement (we should generate it anew), but
  this is to be addressed separately.
sql/sql_class.cc:
  Implement class Diagnostics_area. Please see comments in sql_class.h
  for details.

  Fix a subtle coding mistake in select_send::send_data: when on slave,
  an error in Item::send() was ignored.
  The problem became visible due to asserts that the diagnostics area is
  never double assigned.

  Remove initialization of removed NET members.

  In select_send::abort() do not call select_send::send_eof(). This is
  not inheritance-safe. Even if a stored procedure continue handler is
  found, the current statement is aborted, not succeeded.
  Instead introduce a Protocol API to send the required response,
  Protocol::end_partial_result_set().

  This simplifies implementation of select_send::send_eof(). No need
  to add more asserts that there is no error, there is an assert inside
  Diagnostics_area::set_ok_status() already.

  Leave no trace of no_send_* in the code.
sql/sql_class.h:
  Declare class Diagnostics_area.

  Remove the hack with no_send_ok from
  Substatement_state.

  Provide inline implementations of send_ok/send_eof.

  Add commetns.
sql/sql_connect.cc:
  Remove hacks with no_send_error.

  Since now an error in THD is always set if net->error, it's not necessary
  to check both net->error and thd->is_error() in the do_command loop.

  Use thd->main_da.message() instead of net->last_errno.

  Remove the hack with is_slave_error in sys_init_connect. Since now we do not
  reset the diagnostics area in net_send_error (it's reset at the beginning
  of the next statement), we can access it safely even after
  execute_init_command.
sql/sql_db.cc:
  Update the code to satisfy the invariant that the diagnostics area is never
  assigned twice.
  Incidentally, this fixes Bug 29958 "Weird message on DROP DATABASE if
  mysql.proc does not exist".
sql/sql_delete.cc:
  Change multi-delete to abort in abort(), as per select_send protocol.
  Fixes the merge error with the test for Bug 29136
sql/sql_derived.cc:
  Use getters to access error information.
sql/sql_insert.cc:
  Use getters to access error information.
sql-common/client.c:
  Rename last_error to client_last_error, last_errno to client_last_errno.
sql/sql_parse.cc:
  Remove hacks with no_send_error. Deploy net_end_statement().

  The story of COM_SHUTDOWN is interesting. Long story short, the server
  would become on its death's door, and only no_send_ok/no_send_error assigned
  by send_ok()/net_send_error() would hide its babbling from the client.

  First of all, COM_QUIT does not require a response. So, the comment saying
  "Let's send a response to possible COM_QUIT" is not only groundless
  (even mysqladmin shutdown/mysql_shutdown() doesn't send COM_QUIT after
  COM_SHUTDOWN), it's plainly incorrect.

  Secondly, besides this additional 'OK' packet to respond to a hypothetical
  COM_QUIT, there was the following code in dispatch_command():

  if (thd->killed)
    thd->send_kill_message();
  if (thd->is_error()
    net_send_error(thd);

  This worked out really funny for the thread through which COM_SHUTDOWN
  was delivered: we would get COM_SHUTDOWN, say okay, say okay again,
  kill everybody, get the kill signal ourselves, and then attempt to say
  "Server shutdown in progress" to the client that is very likely long gone.

  This all became visible when asserts were added that the Diagnostics_area
  is not assigned twice.

  Move query_cache_end_of_result() to the end of dispatch_command(), since
  net_send_eof() has been moved there. This is safe, query_cache_end_of_result()
  is a no-op if there is no started query in the cache.

  Consistently use select_send interface to call abort() or send_eof()
  depending on the operation result.

  Remove thd->fatal_error() from reset_master(), it was a no-op.
  in hacks with no_send_error woudl save us
  from complete breakage of the client/server protocol.

  Consistently use select_send::abort() whenever there is an error,
  and select_send::send_eof() in case of success.
  The issue became visible due to added asserts.
sql/sql_partition.cc:
  Always set an error in THD whenever there is a call to fatal_error().
sql/sql_prepare.cc:
  Deploy class Diagnostics_area.
  Remove the unnecessary juggling with the protocol in
  Select_fetch_protocol_binary::send_eof(). EOF packet format is
  protocol-independent.
sql/sql_select.cc:
  Call fatal_error() directly in opt_sum_query.
  Call my_error() whenever we call thd->fatal_error().
sql/sql_servers.cc:
  Use getters to access error information in THD.
sql/sql_show.cc:
  Use getters to access error information in THD.

  Add comments.

  Call my_error() whenever we call fatal_error().
sql/sql_table.cc:
  Replace hacks with no_send_ok with the interface of the diagnostics area.

  Clear the error if ENOENT error in ha_delete_table().
sql/sql_update.cc:
  Introduce multi_update::abort(), which is the proper way to abort a
  multi-update. This fixes the merge conflict between this patch and
  the patch for Bug 29136.
sql/table.cc:
  Use a getter to access error information in THD.
sql/tztime.cc:
  Use a getter to access error information in THD.

e5b2745efc Bug#31210 - INSERT DELAYED crashes server when used on
partitioned table

Trying INSERT DELAYED on a partitioned table, that has not been
used right before, crashes the server. When a table is used for
select or update, it is kept open for some time. This period I
mean with "right before".

Information about partitioning of a table is stored in form of
a string in the .frm file. Parsing of this string requires a
correctly set up lexical analyzer (lex). The partitioning code
uses a new temporary instance of a lex. But it does still refer
to the previously active lex. The delayd insert thread does not
initialize its lex though...

Added initialization for thd->lex before open table in the delayed
thread and at all other places where it is necessary to call
lex_start() if all tables would be partitioned and need to parse
the .frm file.

cfdd203549 Bug#28641 CREATE EVENT with '2038.01.18 03:00:00' let server crash.
Creating an EVENT to be executed at a time close to the end of the allowed
range (2038.01.19 03:14:07 UTC) would cause the server to crash. The
expected behavior is to accept all calendar times within the interval and
reject all other values without crashing.

This patch replaces the function 'sec_to_epoch_TIME' with a Time_zone API call.
This function was broken because it invoked the internal function 'sec_to_epoch'
without respecting the restrictions on the function parameters (and this caused
assertion failure). It also was used as a reverse function to
Time_zone_utc::gmt_sec_to_TIME which it isn't.

sql/event_data_objects.cc:
  Replaced function 'sec_since_epoch_TIME' since it was implemented as
  a wrapper around 'sec_since_epoch' without taking parameter restrictions
  into account. The function was used to load information about event
  execution time from mysql.events table. Further more, the function wasn't
  the inverse function of Time_zone_utc::gmt_sec_to_TIME() which was used
  by events code to store information about event execution time.
sql/event_db_repository.cc:
  Replaced my_tz_UTC object with my_tz_OFFSET0 object because the first one
  doesn't supply us with a bijective MYSQL_TIME<->my_time_t translation. Instead
  the function sec_since_epoch_TIME was used as a reverse function to the method
  my_tz_UTC::gmt_sec_to_TIME.
sql/event_queue.cc:

  the function sec_since_epoch_TIME was used as a reverse function to the method

sql/tztime.cc:

b5e4f54a53 Backport of TIME->MYSQL_TIME / Y2K fixset
Made year 2000 handling more uniform
Removed year 2000 handling out from calc_days()
The above removes some bugs in date/datetimes with year between 0 and 200
Now we get a note when we insert a datetime value into a date column
For default values to CREATE, don't give errors for warning level NOTE
Fixed some compiler failures
Added library ws2_32 for windows compilation (needed if we want to compile with IOCP support)
Removed duplicate typedef TIME and replaced it with MYSQL_TIME

Better (more complete) fix for: Bug#21103 "DATE column not compared as DATE"
Fixed properly Bug#18997 "DATE_ADD and DATE_SUB perform year2K autoconversion magic on 4-digit year value"

f252f9248a WL#3817: Simplify string / memory area types and make things more consistent (first part)
The following type conversions was done:

- Changed byte to uchar
- Changed gptr to uchar*
- Change my_string to char *
- Change my_size_t to size_t
- Change size_s to size_t

Removed declaration of byte, gptr, my_string, my_size_t and size_s.

Following function parameter changes was done:
- All string functions in mysys/strings was changed to use size_t
  instead of uint for string lengths.
- All read()/write() functions changed to use size_t (including vio).
- All protocoll functions changed to use size_t instead of uint
- Functions that used a pointer to a string length was changed to use size_t*
- Changed malloc(), free() and related functions from using gptr to use void *
  as this requires fewer casts in the code and is more in line with how the
  standard functions work.
- Added extra length argument to dirname_part() to return the length of the
  created string.
- Changed (at least) following functions to take uchar* as argument:
  - db_dump()
  - my_net_write()
  - net_write_command()
  - net_store_data()
  - DBUG_DUMP()
  - decimal2bin() & bin2decimal()
- Changed my_compress() and my_uncompress() to use size_t. Changed one
  argument to my_uncompress() from a pointer to a value as we only return
  one value (makes function easier to use).
- Changed type of 'pack_data' argument to packfrm() to avoid casts.
- Changed in readfrm() and writefrom(), ha_discover and handler::discover()
  the type for argument 'frmdata' to uchar** to avoid casts.
- Changed most Field functions to use uchar* instead of char* (reduced a lot of
  casts).
- Changed field->val_xxx(xxx, new_ptr) to take const pointers.

Other changes:
- Removed a lot of not needed casts
- Added a few new cast required by other changes
- Added some cast to my_multi_malloc() arguments for safety (as string lengths
  needs to be uint, not size_t).
- Fixed all calls to hash-get-key functions to use size_t*. (Needed to be done
  explicitely as this conflict was often hided by casting the function to
  hash_get_key).
- Changed some buffers to memory regions to uchar* to avoid casts.
- Changed some string lengths from uint to size_t.
- Changed field->ptr to be uchar* instead of char*. This allowed us to
  get rid of a lot of casts.
- Some changes from true -> TRUE, false -> FALSE, unsigned char -> uchar
- Include zlib.h in some files as we needed declaration of crc32()
- Changed MY_FILE_ERROR to be (size_t) -1.
- Changed many variables to hold the result of my_read() / my_write() to be
  size_t. This was needed to properly detect errors (which are
  returned as (size_t) -1).
- Removed some very old VMS code
- Changed packfrm()/unpackfrm() to not be depending on uint size
  (portability fix)
- Removed windows specific code to restore cursor position as this
  causes slowdown on windows and we should not mix read() and pread()
  calls anyway as this is not thread safe. Updated function comment to
  reflect this. Changed function that depended on original behavior of
  my_pwrite() to itself restore the cursor position (one such case).
- Added some missing checking of return value of malloc().
- Changed definition of MOD_PAD_CHAR_TO_FULL_LENGTH to avoid 'long' overflow.
- Changed type of table_def::m_size from my_size_t to ulong to reflect that
  m_size is the number of elements in the array, not a string/memory
  length.
- Moved THD::max_row_length() to table.cc (as it's not depending on THD).
  Inlined max_row_length_blob() into this function.
- More function comments
- Fixed some compiler warnings when compiled without partitions.
- Removed setting of LEX_STRING() arguments in declaration (portability fix).
- Some trivial indentation/variable name changes.
- Some trivial code simplifications:
  - Replaced some calls to alloc_root + memcpy to use
    strmake_root()/strdup_root().
  - Changed some calls from memdup() to strmake() (Safety fix)
  - Simpler loops in client-simple.c

212ecf348c Removed not used define YY_MAGIC_BELOW

Fixed Bug#23093 "Implicit conversion of 9912101 to date does not match cast(9912101 as date)"

  Give note if we insert a datetime value in a date field
  Don't give notes if we are doing internal test conversions (like from convert_constant_item())
  More documentation (store functions can now return '3' to inform that the function did return a NOTE (not warning or error))
  Revert some changes in Field_newdate::store() to get more optimal code
  Field::set_warning() will now ignore notes if CHECK_FIELD_IGNORE is set.
