Dump thread may encounter an error when reading events from the active binlog
file. However the errors may be temporary, so dump thread will try to read
the event again. But dump thread seeked to an wrong position, it caused some
events was sent twice.
To fix the bug, prev_pos is defined out the while loop and is set the correct
position after reading every event correctly.
This patch also make binlog_can_be_corrupted more accurate, only the binlogs
not closed normally are marked binlog_can_be_corrupted.
Finally, two warnings are added when dump threads encounter the temporary
errors.

Problem:
=======
Errors from my_b_fill are ignored. MYSQL_BIN_LOG::write_cache
code assumes that 0 returned from my_b_fill always means
end-of-cache, but that is incorrect. It can result in error
and the error is ignored. Other callers of my_b_fill don't
check for error: my_b_copy_to_file, maybe my_b_gets.
Fix:
===
An error handler is already present to check the "cache"
error that is reported during "MYSQL_BIN_LOG::write_cache"
call. Hence error handlers are added for "my_b_copy_to_file"
and "my_b_gets".
During my_b_fill() function call, when the cache read fails
info->error= -1 is set. Hence a check for "info->error"
is added for the above to callers upon their return.

In method mysql_binlog_send, right after detecting a EOF in the
read event loop, and before deciding if we should change to a new
binlog file there is a execution window where new events can be
written to the binlog and a rotation can happen. When reaching
the test, the function will then change to a new binlog file
ignoring all the events written in this window. This will result
in events not being replicated.
Only when the binlog is detected as deactivated in the event loop
of the dump thread, can we really know that no more events
remain. For this reason, this test is now made under the log lock
in the beginning of the event loop when reading the events.
=== Problem ===
The test is dependent on binlog positions and checks
to see if the command 'START SLAVE' functions correctly
with the 'UNTIL' clause added to it. The 'UNTIL' clause
is added to specify that the slave should start and run
until the SQL thread reaches a given point in the master
binary log or in the slave relay log.
The test uses hard coded values for MASTER_LOG_POS and
RELAY_LOG_POS, instead of extracting it using
query_get_value() function. There is a test
'rpl.rpl_row_until' which does the similar thing but uses
query_get_value() function to set the values of
MASTER_LOG_POS/ RELAY_LOG_POS. To be precise,
rpl.rpl_row_until is a modified version of
engines/func.rpl_row_until.test.
The use of hard coded values may lead the slave to stop at a position
which may differ from the expected position in the binlog file,
an example being the failure of engines/funcs.rpl_row_until in
mysql-5.1 given as:
"query 'select * from t2' failed. Table 'test.t2' doesn't exist".
In this case, the slave actually ran a couple of extra commands
as a result of which the slave first deleted the table and then
ran a select query on table, leading to the above mentioned failure.
=== Fix ===
1) Fixed the code for failure seen in rpl.rpl_row_until.
This test was also failing although the symptoms of
failure were different.
2) Copied the contents from rpl.rpl_row_until into
into engines/funcs.rpl.rpl_row_until.
3) Updated engines/funcs.rpl_row_until.result accordingly.

passed. It is now detected and an error is reported.
Problem
========
Replication breaks in the cases if the event length exceeds
the size of master Dump thread's max_allowed_packet.
The reason why this failure is occuring is because the event length is
more than the total size of the max_allowed_packet, on addition of the
max_event_header length exceeds the max_allowed_packet of the DUMP thread.
This causes the Dump thread to break replication and throw an error.
That can happen e.g with row-based replication in Update_rows event.
Fix
====
The problem is fixed in 2 steps:
1.) The Dump thread limit to read event is increased to the upper limit
i.e. Dump thread reads whatever gets logged in the binary log.
2.) On the slave side we increase the the max_allowed_packet for the
slave's threads (IO/SQL) by increasing it to 1GB.
This is done using the new server option (slave_max_allowed_packet)
included, is used to regulate the max_allowed_packet of the
slave thread (IO/SQL) by the DBA, and facilitates the sending of
large packets from the master to the slave.
This causes the large packets to be received by the slave and apply
it successfully.
sql/log_event.cc:
The max_allowed_packet is not evaluated to the new option
slave_max_allowed_packet after the fix.
sql/log_event.h:
Added the new option in the log_event.h file.
sql/mysqld.cc:

sql/slave.cc:

i.e. not taking global(max_allowed) into consideration, for the slave's threads.
sql/sql_repl.cc:
The dump thread's max_allowed_packet is set to the upper limit
which makes it independent and it now reads whatever gets
logged in the binary log.
Problem
========
SQL statements close to the size of max_allowed_packet produce binary
log events larger than max_allowed_packet.
The reason why this failure is occuring is because the event length is
more than the total size of the max_allowed_packet + max_event_header
length. Now since the event length exceeds this size master Dump
thread is unable to send the packet on to the slave.
That can happen e.g with row-based replication in Update_rows event.
Fix
====
The problem was fixed by increasing the max_allowed_packet for the
slave's threads (IO/SQL) by increasing it to 1GB.

PROBLEM:
Threads end-up in deadlock due to locks acquired as described
below,
con1: Run Query on a table.
It is important that this SELECT must back-off while
trying to open the t1 and enter into wait_for_condition().
The SELECT then is blocked trying to lock mysys_var->mutex
which is held by con3. The very significant fact here is
that mysys_var->current_mutex will still point to LOCK_open,
even if LOCK_open is no longer held by con1 at this point.
con2: Try dropping table used in con1 or query some table.
It will hold LOCK_open and be blocked trying to lock
kernel_mutex held by con4.
con3: Try killing the query run by con1.
It will hold THD::LOCK_thd_data belonging to con1 while
trying to lock mysys_var->current_mutex belonging to con1.
But current_mutex will point to LOCK_open which is held
by con2.
con4: Get innodb engine status
It will hold kernel_mutex, trying to lock THD::LOCK_thd_data
belonging to con1 which is held by con3.
So while technically only con2, con3 and con4 participate in the
deadlock, con1's mysys_var->current_mutex pointing to LOCK_open
is a vital component of the deadlock.
CYCLE = (THD::LOCK_thd_data -> LOCK_open ->
kernel_mutex -> THD::LOCK_thd_data)
FIX:
LOCK_thd_data has responsibility of protecting,
1) thd->query, thd->query_length
2) VIO
3) thd->mysys_var (used by KILL statement and shutdown)
4) THD during thread delete.
Among above responsibilities, 1), 2)and (3,4) seems to be three
independent group of responsibility. If there is different LOCK
owning responsibility of (3,4), the above mentioned deadlock cycle
can be avoid. This fix introduces LOCK_thd_kill to handle
responsibility (3,4), which eliminates the deadlock issue.
Note: The problem is not found in 5.5. Introduction MDL subsystem
caused metadata locking responsibility to be moved from TDC/TC to
MDL subsystem. Due to this, responsibility of LOCK_open is reduced.
As the use of LOCK_open is removed in open_table() and
mysql_rm_table() the above mentioned CYCLE does not form.

The function mysql_show_binlog_events has a local stack variable
'LOG_INFO linfo;', which is assigned to thd->current_linfo, however
this variable goes out of scope and is destroyed before clean
thd->current_linfo.
The problem is solved by moving 'LOG_INFO linfo;' to function scope.
There are two calls to read_log_event() on master in mysql_binlog_send().
Each call reads 19 bytes in this test case and the error of the second
read_log_event() is reported to the slave.
The second read_log_event() starts from position 94 (75 + 19) to 113
(75 + 19 + 19). Usually, there are two events in the binary log:
. 0 - 3 - Header
. 4 - 105 - Format Descriptor Event
. 106 - 304 - Query Event
and both reads fail because operations are reading from invalid positions
as expected.
However, mysql_binlog_send() does not use the same IO_CACHE that is used to
write into binary log (i.e. mysql_bin_log.log_file) for the hot binary log.
It opens the binary log file directly by calling open_binlog() and creates a
separated IO_CACHE. So there is a possibly that after a master has flushed
the binary log file, the content has been cached by the filesystem, and has
not updated the disk file. If this happens, then a slave will only see part
of the file, and thus the second read_log_event() will report event truncated
error.
To fix the problem, if the first read_log_event() has failed, we ensure that
the second one will try to read from the same position.
rpl_packet got a timeout failure sporadically on PB when stopping
slave. The real reason of this bug is that STOP SLAVE stopped
IO thread first and then stopped SQL thread. It was
possible that IO thread stopped after replicating part of a
transaction which SQL thread was executing. SQL thread would
be hung if the transaction could not be rolled back safely.
After this patch, STOP SLAVE will stop SQL thread first and then stop IO
thread, which guarantees that IO thread will fetch the reset of the
events of the transaction that SQL thread is executing, so that SQL
thread can finish the transaction if it cannot be rolled back safely.
Added below auxiliary files to make the test code neater.

Problem: when SHOW BINLOG EVENTS was issued, it increased the value of
@@session.max_allowed_packet. This allowed a non-root user to increase
the amount of memory used by her thread arbitrarily. Thus, it removes
the bound on the amount of system resources used by a client, so it
presents a security risk (DoS attack).
Fix: it is correct to increase the value of @@session.max_allowed_packet
while executing SHOW BINLOG EVENTS (see BUG 30435). However, the
increase should only be temporary. Thus, the fix is to restore the value
when SHOW BINLOG EVENTS ends.
The value of @@session.max_allowed_packet is also increased in
mysql_binlog_send (i.e., the binlog dump thread). It is not clear if this
can cause any trouble, since normally the client that issues
COM_BINLOG_DUMP will not issue any other commands that would be affected
by the increased value of @@session.max_allowed_packet. However, we

The slave crashed while two threads: IO thread and user thread
raced for the same mutex (the append_buffer_lock protecting the
relay log's IO_CACHE). The IO thread was trying to flush the
cache, and for that was grabbing the append_buffer_lock.
However, the other thread was closing and reopening the relay log
when the IO thread tried to lock. Closing and reopening the log
includes destroying and reinitialising the IO_CACHE
mutex. Therefore, the IO thread tried to lock a destroyed mutex.
We fix this by backporting patch for BUG#50364 which fixed this
bug in mysql server 5.5+. The patch deploys missing
synchronization when flush_master_info is called and the relay
log is flushed by the IO thread. In detail the patch backports

DBUG_SYNC_POINT has at least one strong limitation that it's not defined
on all platforms. It has issues cooperating with @@debug.
All in all its functionality is superseded by DEBUG_SYNC facility and
there is no reason to maintain the old less flexible one.
Fixed with adding debug_sync_set_action() function as a facility to set up
a sync-action in the server sources code and re-writing existing simulations
(found 3) to use it.
Couple of tests have been reworked as well.

The server would hit an assertion because of a DBUG violation.
There was a missing DBUG_RETURN and instead a plain return
was used.
This patch replaces the return with DBUG_RETURN.
Manually deleteing one or more entries from 'master-bin.index', will
cause master infinitely loop to send one binlog file.
When starting a dump session, master opens index file and search the binlog file
which is being requested by the slave. The position of the binlog file in the
index file is recorded. it will be used to find the next binlog file when current
binlog file has dumped completely. As only the position is used, it may
not get the correct file if some entries has been removed manually from the index file.
the master will reopen the current binlog file which has been dump completely
and redump it if it can not get the next binlog file's name from index file.
It obviously is a logical error.
Even though it is allowed to manually change index file,
but it is not recommended. so after this patch, master
sends a fatal error to slave and close the dump session if a new binlog file
has been generated and master can not get it from the index file.
But there is no Last_IO_Error reported.
On the master, if a binary log event is larger than max_allowed_packet,
ER_MASTER_FATAL_ERROR_READING_BINLOG and the specific reason of this error is
sent to a slave when it requests a dump from the master, thus leading
the I/O thread to stop.
On a slave, the I/O thread stops when receiving a packet larger than max_allowed_packet.
In both cases, however, there was no Last_IO_Error reported.
This patch adds code to report the Last_IO_Error and exact reason before stopping the
I/O thread and also reports the case the out memory pops up while
handling packets from the master.

mutex in the mysqld_list_processes function.
The server was not cleaning the last IO error and error number when
resetting slave.
This patch addresses this issue by backporting into 5.1 part of the
patch in BUG 34654. A fix for this issue had already been pushed into
6.0 as part of the aforementioned bug, however the patch also included
some refactoring. The fix for 5.1 does not take into account the
refactoring part.
mysql-test/extra/rpl_tests/rpl_reset_slave.test:
Backported the test case and improved with deploying include/start_slave.inc
in relevant spots.
sql/slave.cc:
Backported part of patch from 6.0 that includes cleaning
mi->clear_error() at:
1. beginning of handle_slave_io
2. on successful connection
Also, backported the assertion added in the original patch.
sql/sql_repl.cc:
Backported the call to mi->clear_error() on reset_slave().
my_error() was invoked in reset_slave()'s with purge_relay_logs()-failing branch
without passing sql_errno to it.
Fixed with setting sql_errno= ER_RELAY_LOG_FAIL in the purge_relay_logs()-failing branch.
sql/sql_repl.cc:
set sql_errno= ER_RELAY_LOG_FAIL when purge_relay_logs() fails.

Several system variables did not behave like system variables should do.
When trying to SET them or use them in SELECT, they were reported as
"unknown system variable". But they appeared in SHOW VARIABLES.
This has been fixed by removing the "fixed_vars" array of variables
and integrating the variables into the normal system variables chain.
All of these variables do now behave as read-only global-only
variables. Trying to SET them tells they are read-only, trying to
SELECT the session value tells they are global only. Selecting the
global value works. It delivers the same value as SHOW VARIABLES.

Rotate event is automatically generated and written when rotating binary
log or relay log. Rotate events for relay logs are usually ignored by slave
SQL thread becuase they have the same server id as that of the slave.
However, if --replicate-same-server-id is enabled, rotate event
for relay log would be treated as if it's a rotate event from master, and
would be executed by slave to update the rli->group_master_log_name and
rli->group_master_log_pos to a wrong value and cause the MASTER_POS_WAIT
function to fail and return NULL.
This patch fixed this problem by setting a flag bit (LOG_EVENT_RELAY_LOG_F)
in the event to tell the SQL thread to ignore these Rotate events generated
for relay logs.
This patch also added another binlog event flag bit (LOG_EVENT_ARTIFICIAL_F)
to distinquish faked events, the method used before this was by checking if
log_pos was zero.
sql/log.h:
Add a member to MYSQL_BIN_LOG to distinguish binary log from relay log.
sql/log_event.cc:

read_buffer_size set on master
BUG#33413 show binlog events fails if binlog has event size of close
to max_allowed_packet
The size of Append_block replication event was determined solely by
read_buffer_size whereas the rest of replication code deals with
max_allowed_packet.
When the former parameter was set to larger than the latter there were
two artifacts: the master could not read events from binlog;
show master events did not show.
Fixed with
- fragmenting the used io-cached buffer into pieces each size of less
than max_allowed_packet (bug#30435)
- incrementing show-binlog-events handling thread's max_allowed_packet
with the max estimated for the replication header size
