When executing row-ordered-retrieval index merge,
the handler was cloned, but it used the wrong
memory root, so instead of allocating memory
on the thread/query's mem_root, it used the table's
mem_root, resulting in non released memory in the
table object, and was not freed until the table was
closed.
Solution was to ensure that memory used during cloning
of a handler was allocated from the correct memory root.
This was implemented by fixing handler::clone() to also
take a name argument, so it can be used with partitioning.
And in ha_partition only allocate the ha_partition's ref, and
call the original ha_partition partitions clone() and set at cloned
partitions.

Regression introduced in bug#52455. Problem was that the

retrieved row.
Fixed by setting the last used partition in ha_partition::index_read_idx_map.
that implement add_index
The problem was that ALTER TABLE blocked reads on an InnoDB table
while adding a secondary index, even if this was not needed. It is
only needed for the final step where the .frm file is updated.
The reason queries were blocked, was that ALTER TABLE upgraded the
metadata lock from MDL_SHARED_NO_WRITE (which blocks writes) to
MDL_EXCLUSIVE (which blocks all accesses) before index creation.
The way the server handles index creation, is that storage engines
publish their capabilities to the server and the server determines
which of the following three ways this can be handled: 1) build a
new version of the table; 2) change the existing table but with
exclusive metadata lock; 3) change the existing table but without
metadata lock upgrade.
For InnoDB and secondary index creation, option 3) should have been
selected. However this failed for two reasons. First, InnoDB did
not publish this capability properly.
Second, the ALTER TABLE code failed to made proper use of the
information supplied by the storage engine. A variable
need_lock_for_indexes was set accordingly, but was not later used.
This patch fixes this problem by only doing metadata lock upgrade
before index creation/deletion if this variable has been set.
This patch also changes some of the related terminology used
in the code. Specifically the use of "fast" and "online" with
respect to ALTER TABLE. "Fast" was used to indicate that an
ALTER TABLE operation could be done without involving a
temporary table. "Fast" has been renamed "in-place" to more
accurately describe the behavior.
"Online" meant that the operation could be done without taking
a table lock. However, in the current implementation writes
are always prohibited during ALTER TABLE and an exclusive
metadata lock is held while updating the .frm, so ALTER TABLE
is not completely online. This patch replaces "online" with
"in-place", with additional comments indicating if concurrent
reads are allowed during index creation/deletion or not.
An important part of this update of terminology is renaming
of the handler flags used by handlers to indicate if index
creation/deletion can be done in-place and if concurrent reads
are allowed. For example, the HA_ONLINE_ADD_INDEX_NO_WRITES
flag has been renamed to HA_INPLACE_ADD_INDEX_NO_READ_WRITE,
while HA_ONLINE_ADD_INDEX is now HA_INPLACE_ADD_INDEX_NO_WRITE.
Note that this is a rename to clarify current behavior, the
flag values have not changed and no flags have been removed or
added.

with on duplicate key update
There was a missed corner case in the partitioning
handler, which caused the next_insert_id to be changed
in the second level handlers (i.e the hander of a partition),
which caused this debug assertion.
The solution was to always ensure that only the partitioning
level generates auto_increment values, since if it was done
within a partition, it may fail to match the partition
function.

sql/ha_partition.cc:
In <engine>::write_row the auto_inc value is generated
through handler::update_auto_increment (which calls <engine>::get_auto_increment() if needed).
If:
* INSERT_ID was set to 0
* it was updated to 0 by 'INSERT ... ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE' and changed partitions for the row
Then it would try to generate a auto_increment value in the
<engine for a specific partition>::write_row, which will
trigger the assert.
So the solution is to prevent this by,
in ha_partition::write_row set auto_inc_field_not_null and
add MODE_NO_AUTO_VALUE_ON_ZERO
in ha_partition::update_row (when changing partition) temporary
set table->next_number_field to NULL which calling the
partitions ::write_row().
It was possible to issue an ALTER TABLE ADD PRIMARY KEY on
an partitioned InnoDB table that failed and crashed the server.
The problem was that it succeeded to create the PK on at least
one partition, and then failed on a subsequent partition, due to
duplicate key violation. Since the partitions that already had added
the PK was not reverted all partitions was not consistent with the
table definition, which caused the crash.
The solution was to add a revert step to ha_partition::add_index()
that dropped the index for the already succeeded partitions, on failure.

Bug#54678: InnoDB, TRUNCATE, ALTER, I_S SELECT, crash or deadlock
- Incompatible change: truncate no longer resorts to a row by
row delete if the storage engine does not support the truncate
method. Consequently, the count of affected rows does not, in
any case, reflect the actual number of rows.
- Incompatible change: it is no longer possible to truncate a
table that participates as a parent in a foreign key constraint,
unless it is a self-referencing constraint (both parent and child
are in the same table). To work around this incompatible change
and still be able to truncate such tables, disable foreign checks
with SET foreign_key_checks=0 before truncate. Alternatively, if
foreign key checks are necessary, please use a DELETE statement
without a WHERE condition.
Problem description:
The problem was that for storage engines that do not support
truncate table via a external drop and recreate, such as InnoDB
which implements truncate via a internal drop and recreate, the
delete_all_rows method could be invoked with a shared metadata
lock, causing problems if the engine needed exclusive access
to some internal metadata. This problem originated with the
fact that there is no truncate specific handler method, which
ended up leading to a abuse of the delete_all_rows method that
is primarily used for delete operations without a condition.
Solution:
The solution is to introduce a truncate handler method that is
invoked when the engine does not support truncation via a table
drop and recreate. This method is invoked under a exclusive
metadata lock, so that there is only a single instance of the
table when the method is invoked.
Also, the method is not invoked and a error is thrown if
the table is a parent in a non-self-referencing foreign key
relationship. This was necessary to avoid inconsistency as
some integrity checks are bypassed. This is inline with the
fact that truncate is primarily a DDL operation that was
designed to quickly remove all data from a table.

Add test cases for truncate and foreign key checks.

Reorganize the various truncate methods. delete_all_rows is now
passed directly to the underlying engines, so as truncate. The
code responsible for truncating individual partitions is moved
to ha_partition::truncate_partition, which is invoked when a
ALTER TABLE t1 TRUNCATE PARTITION p statement is executed.
Since the partition truncate no longer can be invoked via
delete, the bitmap operations are not necessary anymore. The
explicit reset of the auto-increment value is also removed
as the underlying engines are now responsible for reseting
the value.

The handler function for reading one row from a specific index

Essentially, the problem is that safemalloc is excruciatingly
slow as it checks all allocated blocks for overrun at each
memory management primitive, yielding a almost exponential
slowdown for the memory management functions (malloc, realloc,
free). The overrun check basically consists of verifying some
bytes of a block for certain magic keys, which catches some
simple forms of overrun. Another minor problem is violation
of aliasing rules and that its own internal list of blocks
is prone to corruption.
Another issue with safemalloc is rather the maintenance cost
as the tool has a significant impact on the server code.
Given the magnitude of memory debuggers available nowadays,
especially those that are provided with the platform malloc
implementation, maintenance of a in-house and largely obsolete
memory debugger becomes a burden that is not worth the effort
due to its slowness and lack of support for detecting more
common forms of heap corruption.
Since there are third-party tools that can provide the same
functionality at a lower or comparable performance cost, the
solution is to simply remove safemalloc. Third-party tools
can provide the same functionality at a lower or comparable
performance cost.
The removal of safemalloc also allows a simplification of the
malloc wrappers, removing quite a bit of kludge: redefinition
of my_malloc, my_free and the removal of the unused second
argument of my_free. Since free() always check whether the
supplied pointer is null, redudant checks are also removed.
Also, this patch adds unit testing for my_malloc and moves
my_realloc implementation into the same file as the other
memory allocation primitives.

SELECT and ALTER TABLE ... REBUILD PARTITION".
ALTER TABLE on InnoDB table (including partitioned tables)
acquired exclusive locks on rows of table being altered.
In cases when there was concurrent transaction which did
locking reads from this table this sometimes led to a
deadlock which was not detected by MDL subsystem nor by
InnoDB engine (and was reported only after exceeding
innodb_lock_wait_timeout).
This problem stemmed from the fact that ALTER TABLE acquired
TL_WRITE_ALLOW_READ lock on table being altered. This lock
was interpreted as a write lock and thus for table being
altered handler::external_lock() method was called with
F_WRLCK as an argument. As result InnoDB engine treated
ALTER TABLE as an operation which is going to change data
and acquired LOCK_X locks on rows being read from old
version of table.
In case when there was a transaction which already acquired
SR metadata lock on table and some LOCK_S locks on its rows
(e.g. by using it in subquery of DML statement) concurrent
ALTER TABLE was blocked at the moment when it tried to
acquire LOCK_X lock before reading one of these rows.
The transaction's attempt to acquire SW metadata lock on
table being altered led to deadlock, since it had to wait
for ALTER TABLE to release SNW lock. This deadlock was not
detected and got resolved only after timeout expiring
because waiting were happening in two different subsystems.
Similar deadlocks could have occured in other situations.
This patch tries to solve the problem by changing ALTER TABLE
implementation to use TL_READ_NO_INSERT lock instead of
TL_WRITE_ALLOW_READ. After this step handler::external_lock()
is called with F_RDLCK as an argument and InnoDB engine
correctly interprets ALTER TABLE as operation which only
reads data from original version of table. Thanks to this
ALTER TABLE acquires only LOCK_S locks on rows it reads.
This, in its turn, causes inter-subsystem deadlocks to go
away, as all potential lock conflicts and thus deadlocks will
be limited to metadata locking subsystem:
- When ALTER TABLE reads rows from table being altered it
can't encounter any locks which conflict with LOCK_S row
locks. There should be no concurrent transactions holding
LOCK_X row locks. Such a transaction should have been
acquired SW metadata lock on table first which would have
conflicted with ALTER's SNW lock.
- Vice versa, when DML which runs concurrently with ALTER
TABLE tries to lock row it should be requesting only LOCK_S
lock which is compatible with locks acquired by ALTER,
as otherwise such DML must own an SW metadata lock on table
which would be incompatible with ALTER's SNW lock.

sql/ha_partition.cc:

F_RDLCK now).

sql/sql_base.cc:
Replaced conditions which used TL_WRITE_ALLOW_READ
lock type with equivalent conditions using

sql/sql_table.cc:
mysql_admin_table():
Use TL_WRITE_ALLOW_WRITE lock type instead of
TL_WRITE_ALLOW_READ to determine that we need to acquire
upgradable metadata lock. This should allow to completely
get rid of TL_WRITE_ALLOW_READ in long term.
mysql_recreate_table():
ALTER TABLE now requires TL_READ_NO_INSERT thr_lock.c lock
instead of TL_WRITE_ALLOW_READ.
sql/sql_trigger.cc:
Changed CREATE/DROP TRIGGER implementation to use
TL_READ_NO_INSERT lock instead of TL_WRITE_ALLOW_READ lock.
The latter is no longer necessary since:
a) We now can rely on metadata locks to achieve proper
isolation between two DDL statements or DDL and DML
statements.
b) This statement does not change any data in table so there
is no need to inform storage engine about it.
sql/sql_yacc.yy:
Changed implementation of ALTER TABLE (and CREATE/DROP INDEX
as a consequence) to use TL_READ_NO_INSERT lock instead of
TL_WRITE_ALLOW_READ lock. This is possible since:
a) We now can rely on metadata locks to achieve proper
isolation between two DDL statements or DDL and DML
statements.
b) This statement only reads data in table being open.
We write data only to the new version of table and
then replace with it old version of table under
X metadata lock.
Thanks to this change InnoDB will no longer acquire LOCK_X
locks on rows being read by ALTER TABLE (instead LOCK_S
locks will be acquired) and thus cause of bug #51263
"Deadlock between transactional SELECT and ALTER TABLE ...
REBUILD PARTITION" is removed.
Did the similar change for CREATE TRIGGER (see comments
for sql_trigger.cc for details).

Problem was that the ha_data structure was introduced in 5.1
and only used for partitioning first, but with the intention
of be of use for others engines as well, and when used by other
engines it would clash if it also was partitioned.
Solution is to move the partitioning specific data to a separate
structure, with its own mutex (which is used for auto_increment).
Also did rename PARTITION_INFO to PARTITION_STATS since there
already exist a class named partition_info, also cleaned up
some related variables.

concurrent I_S query
There were two problem:
1) MYSQL_LOCK_IGNORE_FLUSH also ignored name locks
2) there was a race between abort_and_upgrade_locks and
alter_close_tables
(i.e. remove_table_from_cache and
close_data_files_and_morph_locks)
Which allowed the table to be opened with MYSQL_LOCK_IGNORE_FLUSH flag
resulting in renaming a partition that was already in use,
which could cause the table to be unusable.
Solution was to not allow IGNORE_FLUSH to skip waiting for
a named locked table.
And to not release the LOCK_open mutex between the
calls to remove_table_from_cache and
close_data_files_and_morph_locks by merging the functions
abort_and_upgrade_locks and alter_close_tables.

auto_increment on duplicate entry
The bug was that when INSERT_ID was used and the storage
engine was told to release any reserved but not used
auto_increment values, it set the highest auto_increment
value to INSERT_ID.
The fix was to check if the auto_increment value was forced
by user (INSERT_ID) or by slave-thread, i.e. not auto-
generated. So that it is only allowed to release generated
values.

Update results (CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS takes
into account existence of the temporary table).
There was two problems:
The first was the symptom, caused by bad error handling in
ha_partition. It did not handle print_error etc. when
having no partitions (when used by dummy handler).
The second was the real problem that when dropping tables
it reused the table type (storage engine) from when the lock
was asked for, not the table type that it had when gaining
the exclusive name lock. So that it tried to delete tables
from wrong storage engines.
Solutions for the first problem was to accept some handler
calls to the partitioning handler even if it was not setup
with any partitions, and also if possible fallback
to use the base handler's default functions.
Solution for the second problem was to remove the optimization
to reuse the definition from the cache, instead always check
the frm-file when holding the LOCK_open mutex
(updated with a fix for a debug print crash and better
comments as required by reviewer, and removed optimization
to avoid reading the frm-file).

REORGANIZE PARTITION
There were several problems which lead to this this,
all related to bad error handling.
1) There was several bugs preventing the ddl-log to be used for
cleaning up created files on error.
2) The error handling after the copy partition rows did not close
and unlock the tables, resulting in deletion of partitions
which were in use, which lead InnoDB to put the partition to
drop in a background queue.

revno: 2630.4.38
committer: Konstantin Osipov <konstantin@mysql.com>
branch nick: mysql-6.0-4144
timestamp: Wed 2008-06-25 22:07:06 +0400
message:
WL#4144 - Lock MERGE engine children.
Committing a version of the patch merged with WL#3726
on behalf of Ingo.
Step #1: Move locking from parent to children.
MERGE children are now left in the query list of tables
after inserted there in open_tables(). So they are locked
by lock_tables() as all other tables are.
The MERGE parent does not store locks any more. It appears
in a MYSQL_LOCK with zero lock data. This is kind of a "dummy"
lock.
All other lock handling is also done directly on the children.
To protect against parent or child modifications during LOCK
TABLES, the children are detached after every statement and
attached before every statement, even under LOCK TABLES.
The children table list is removed from the query list of tables
on every detach and on close of the parent.
Step #2: Move MERGE specific functionality from SQL layer
into table handler.
Functionality moved from SQL layer (mainly sql_base.cc)
to the table handler (ha_myisammrg.cc).
Unnecessary code is removed from the SQL layer.
Step #3: Moved all MERGE specific members from TABLE
to ha_myisammrg.
Moved members from TABLE to ha_myisammrg.
Renamed some mebers.
Fixed comments.
Step #4: Valgrind and coverage testing
Valgrind did not uncover new problems.
Added purecov comments.
Added a new test for DATA/INDEX DIRECTORY options.
Changed handling of ::reset() for non-attached children.
Fixed the merge-big test.
Step #5: Fixed crashes detected during review
Changed detection when to attach/detach.
Added new tests.
Backport also the fix for Bug#44040 "MySQL allows creating a
MERGE table upon VIEWs but crashes when using it"

message:
Implement code review fixes for WL#3726 "DDL locking for all
metadata objects": cleanup the code from share->mutex
acquisitions, which are now obsolete.
sql/ha_partition.cc:
Rename share->mutex to share->LOCK_ha_data. The mutex never
protected the entire share. The right way to protect a share
is to acquire an MDL lock.
sql/ha_partition.h:
Rename share->mutex to share->LOCK_ha_data.
sql/sql_base.cc:
Remove LOCK_table_share. Do not acquire share->mutex when
deleting a table share or incrementing its ref_count.
All these operations are and must continue to be protected by LOCK_open
and respective MDL locks.
sql/sql_view.cc:
Remove acquisition of share->mutex when incrementing share->ref_count.
sql/table.cc:
Simplify release_table_shar() by removing dead code related
to share->mutex from it.
sql/table.h:
Rename TABLE_SHARE::mutex to TABLE_SHARE::LOCK_ha_data
to better reflect its purpose.
storage/myisam/ha_myisam.cc:
Rename share->mutex to share->LOCK_ha_data.
Problem was that ha_partition::records_in_range called
records_in_range for all non pruned partitions, even if
an estimate should be given.
Solution is to only use 1/3 of the partitions (up to 10) for
records_in_range and estimate the total from this subset.
(And continue until a non zero return value from the called
partitions records_in_range is given, since 0 means no rows
will match.)
sql/ha_partition.cc:
Bug#48846: Too much time spent in ha_partition::records_in_range if not able to prune
estimate_rows_upper_bound and records_in_range are very similar
(the only difference is the function and its parameters to use)
so I created a common function for this.
Since these calls from the optimizer are only estimates, it is
not neccesary to call them for every partition, it can use
a much smaller subset of the used partitions instead,
which improves performance for selects.
sql/ha_partition.h:
Bug#48846: Too much time spent in ha_partition::records_in_range if not able to prune
Added two private functions to help some
optimizer calls.
- Moved some code from innodb_plugin to xtradb, to ensure that all tests runs
- Did changes in pbxt and maria storage engines becasue of changes in thd->query
- Reverted wrong code in sql_table.cc for how ROW_FORMAT is used.
This is a re-commit of Monty's merge to eliminate an extra commit from
MySQL-5.1.42 that was accidentally included in the merge.
This is a merge of the MySQL 5.1.41 clone-off (clone-5.1.41-build). In
case there are any extra changes done before final MySQL 5.1.41
release, these will need to be merged later before MariaDB 5.1.41
release.

message:
Bug#15192 "fatal errors" are caught by handlers in stored procedures
The problem is that fatal errors (e.g.: out of memory) were being
caught by stored procedure exception handlers which could cause
the execution to not be stopped due to a continue handler.
The solution is to not call any exception handler if the error is
fatal and send the fatal error to the client.

get_table_share, drop_open_table
In the partition handler code, LOCK_open and share->LOCK_ha_data
are acquired in the wrong order in certain cases. When doing a
multi-row INSERT (i.e a INSERT..SELECT) in a table with auto-
increment column(s). the increments must be in a monotonically
continuous increasing sequence (i.e it can't have "holes"). To
achieve this, a lock is held for the duration of the operation.
share->LOCK_ha_data was used for this purpose.
Whenever there was a need to open a view _during_ the operation
(views are not currently pre-opened the way tables are), and
LOCK_open was grabbed, a deadlock could occur. share->LOCK_ha_data
is other places used _while_ holding LOCK_open.
A new mutex was introduced in the HA_DATA_PARTITION structure,
for exclusive use of the autoincrement data fields, so we don't
need to overload the use of LOCK_ha_data here.
A module test case has not been supplied, since the problem occurs
as a result of a race condition, and testing for this condition
is thus not deterministic. Testing for it could be done by
setting up a test case as described in the bug report.

Bug#44059: Incorrect cardinality of indexes on a partitioned table
Checking which partition that has the most rows, and using that
partition for HA_STATUS_CONST instead of first partition
is reached
Problem was bad error handling, leaving some new temporary
partitions locked and initialized and some not yet initialized
and locked, leading to a crash when trying to unlock the not
yet initialized and locked partitions
Solution was to unlock the already locked partitions, and not
include any of the new temporary partitions in later unlocks
