Problem:

The mysqlbinlog tool is leaking memory, causing failures in various tests when
compiling and testing with AddressSanitizer or LeakSanitizer like this:
cmake -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Debug -DWITH_ASAN:BOOL=ON /path/to/source
make -j$(nproc)
cd mysql-test
ASAN_OPTIONS=abort_on_error=1 ./mtr --parallel=auto rpl.rpl_row_mysqlbinlog
CURRENT_TEST: rpl.rpl_row_mysqlbinlog

Analysis:
========
'mysqlbinlog' tool is being used to read binary log events from a remote server.
While reading binary log, if a fake rotate event is found following actions are
taken.
If 'to-last-log' option is specified, then fake rotate event is processed.
In the absence of 'to-last-log' skip the fake rotate event.
In this skipped case the fake rotate event object is not getting cleaned up
resulting in memory leak.
Fix:
===
Cleanup the fake rotate event.
This issues is already fixed in MariaDB 10.0.23 and higher versions as part of
commit c3018b0ff4
There were two newly enabled warnings:
1. cast for a function pointers. Affected sql_analyse.h, mi_write.c
and ma_write.cc, mf_iocache-t.cc, mysqlbinlog.cc, encryption.cc, etc
2. memcpy/memset of nontrivial structures. Fixed as:
* the warning disabled for InnoDB
* TABLE, TABLE_SHARE, and TABLE_LIST got a new method reset() which
does the bzero(), which is safe for these classes, but any other
bzero() will still cause a warning
* Table_scope_and_contents_source_st uses `TABLE_LIST *` (trivial)
instead of `SQL_I_List<TABLE_LIST>` (not trivial) so it's safe to
bzero now.
* added casts in debug_sync.cc and sql_select.cc (for JOIN)
* move assignment method for MDL_request instead of memcpy()
* PARTIAL_INDEX_INTERSECT_INFO::init() instead of bzero()
* remove constructor from READ_RECORD() to make it trivial
* replace some memcpy() with c++ copy assignments
The problem was originally stated in
http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=82212
The size of an base64-encoded Rows_log_event exceeds its
vanilla byte representation in 4/3 times.
When a binlogged event size is about 1GB mysqlbinlog generates
a BINLOG query that can't be send out due to its size.
It is fixed with fragmenting the BINLOG argument C-string into
(approximate) halves when the base64 encoded event is over 1GB size.
The mysqlbinlog in such case puts out
SET @binlog_fragment_0='base64-encoded-fragment_0';
SET @binlog_fragment_1='base64-encoded-fragment_1';
BINLOG @binlog_fragment_0, @binlog_fragment_1;
to represent a big BINLOG.
For prompt memory release BINLOG handler is made to reset the BINLOG argument
user variables in the middle of processing, as if @binlog_fragment_{0,1} = NULL
is assigned.
Notice the 2 fragments are enough, though the client and server still may
need to tweak their @@max_allowed_packet to satisfy to the fragment
size (which they would have to do anyway with greater number of
fragments, should that be desired).
On the lower level the following changes are made:
Log_event::print_base64()
remains to call encoder and store the encoded data into a cache but
now *without* doing any formatting. The latter is left for time
when the cache is copied to an output file (e.g mysqlbinlog output).
No formatting behavior is also reflected by the change in the meaning
of the last argument which specifies whether to cache the encoded data.
Rows_log_event::print_helper()
is made to invoke a specialized fragmented cache-to-file copying function
which is
copy_cache_to_file_wrapped()
that takes care of fragmenting also optionally wraps encoded
strings (fragments) into SQL stanzas.
my_b_copy_to_file()
is refactored to into my_b_copy_all_to_file(). The former function
is generalized
to accepts more a limit argument to constraint the copying and does
not reinitialize anymore the cache into reading mode.
The limit does not do any effect on the fully read cache.
find_type_or_exit() client helper did exit(1) on error, exit(1) moved to
clients.
mysql_read_default_options() did exit(1) on error, error is passed through and
handled now.
my_str_malloc_default() did exit(1) on error, replaced my_str_ allocator
functions with normal my_malloc()/my_realloc()/my_free().
sql_connect.cc did many exit(1) on hash initialisation failure. Removed error
check since my_hash_init() never fails.
my_malloc() did exit(1) on error. Replaced with abort().
my_load_defaults() did exit(1) on error, replaced with return 2.
my_load_defaults() still does exit(0) when invoked with --print-defaults.
This includes fixing all utilities to not have any memory leaks,
as safemalloc warnings stopped tests from passing on MacOSX.
- Ensure that all clients takes character-set-dir, as the
libmysqlclient library will use it.
- mysql-test-run now passes character-set-dir to all external clients.
- Changed dynstr_free() so that it can be called twice (made freeing code easier)
- Changed rpl_global_gtid_slave_state to be allocated dynamicly as it
includes a mutex that needs to be initizlied/destroyed before my_end() is called.
- Removed rpl_slave_state::init() and rpl_slave_stage::deinit() as
their job are better handling by constructor and delete.
- Print alias instead of table_name in check_duplicate_key as
table_name may have been converted to lower case.
Other things:
- Fixed a case in time_to_datetime_with_warn() where we where
using && instead of & in tests
There are three Log_event::read_log_event() methods:
1. read the event image from IO_CACHE into String
2. create Log_event from the in-memory event image
3. read the event image from IO_CACHE and create Log_event
The 3rd was reading event image into memory and invoking the 2nd to
create Log_event. Now the 3rd also uses the 1st to read the event image
from IO_CACHE into memory, instead of duplicating its functionality.
partially cherry-pick from mysql/5.6.
No test case (mysql/5.6 test case is useless, the correct
test case uses too much memory)

Bug #49931 Incorrect type in read_log_event error
Bug #49932 mysqlbinlog max_allowed_packet hard coded to 1GB
Problem: For every event read, mysqlbinlog calls localtime() which in turn
calls stat(/etc/localtime) which is causing kernel mutex contention.
Analysis and Fix:
localtime() calls stat(/etc/localtime) for every instance of the call
where as localtime_r() the reentrant version was optimized to store
the read only tz internal structure. Hence it will not call
stat(/etc/localtime). It will call only once at the beginning.
The mysql server is calling localtime_r() and mysqlbinlog tool is
one place where we are still using localtime().
Once the process (mysqlbinlog) is started if timezone is changed
it will be not picked up the the process and it will continue
with the same values as the beginning of the process. This
behavior is in-lined with mysql server.
Also adding localtime_r() and gmtime_r() support for windows.
mysql_upgrade --help now also prints out --default options and variable values.
mysql_upgrade now prints permission errors.
mysql_upgrade doesn't print some non essential info if --silent is used.
Added handler error message about incompatible versions
Fixed that mysqlbug and mysql_install_db have the executable flag set.
Removed executable flag for some non executable files.
Changed in mysql_install_db askmonty.org to mariadb.com.
Ensured that all client executables prints --default options the same way.
Allow REPAIR ... USE_FRM for old .frm files if the are still compatible.
Extended shown error for storage engine messages.

In log_event.h
DESCRIPTION:
Due to inclusion of an implementation file, namely 'rpl_tblmap.cc'
in a header file, namely 'log_event.h'; linker errors occur if
log_event.h is included in an application containing multiple source
files, such as in the case of Binlog API.
Binlog API requires including log_event.h in its source files;
which leads to multiple definition errors, for functions defined
in rpl_tblmap.cc for class 'table_mapping'.
FIX:
Change the inclusion from header file(log_event.h) to source files
using this header and have flag MYSQL_CLIENT set. The only file in
the current server repository is mysqlbinlog.cc.
client/mysqlbinlog.cc:
Pulled in code of rpl_tblmap.cc
sql/log_event.h:
Removed inclusion of the implementation file from this header file
SINGLE DATABASE; MYSQLBINLOG
Problem: If last subevent inside a RBR event
is skipped while replaying a binary log
using mysqlbinlog with --database=... option,
generated output is missing end marker('/*!*/;)
for that RBR event. Thence causing syntax error
while replaying the generated output.
Fix: Append end marker ('/*!*/;) if the last
subevent is getting skipped.
Append end marker if the last
subevent is getting skipped.
client/mysqlbinlog.cc:
Append end marker if the last
subevent is getting skipped.
