sql/sql_select.cc:
- Threat all clustered indexes equal in test_if_skip_sort_order().
This is a temporary fix as the current code doesn't do proper cost analyizes for which index to use.
I will address this later as the change required is not trivial.
- Fixed a bug where select_limit was changed in the loop, which made different indexes see diferent values of select_limit
- Added a lot of code comments
- Updated get_best_ror_intersec() to prefer index scan on not clustered keys before clustered keys.
- Use HA_CLUSTERED_INDEX to define if one should use HA_MRR_INDEX_ONLY
- For test of using index or filesort to resolve ORDER BY, use HA_CLUSTERED_INDEX flag instead of primary_key_is_clustered()
- Use HA_TABLE_SCAN_ON_INDEX instead of primary_key_is_clustered() to decide if ALTER TABLE ... ORDER BY will have any effect.

When a view is merged into a select all the depended_from fields
pointing to the select of the view should have been corrected to
point to the select where the view is used. It was not done yet.
This could lead to wrong results returned by queries such as
one from the test case for bug 33389.
Correction of outer references required walking through all items
of the proccesed qurery. To avoid this the following solution was
implemented.
Each select now contains a pointer to the select it is merged into
(if there is any). Such pointers allow to get the corrected value
of depended_from on the fly. The function Item_ident::get_depended_from
was introduced for this purpose.

Resolved all conflicts, bad merges and fixed a few minor bugs in the code.
Commented out the queries from multi_update, view, subselect_sj, func_str,
derived_view, view_grant that failed either with crashes in ps-protocol or
with wrong results.
The failures are clear indications of some bugs in the code and these bugs
are to be fixed.
Analysis:
The subquery is evaluated first during ref-optimization of the outer
query because the subquery is considered constant from the perspective
of the outer query. Thus an attempt is made to evaluate the MAX subquery
and use the new constant to drive an index nested loops join.
During this evaluation the inner-most subquery replaces the JOIN_TAB
with a new one that fetches the data from a temp table.
The function select_describe crashes at the lines:
TABLE_LIST *real_table= table->pos_in_table_list;
item_list.push_back(new Item_string(real_table->alias,
strlen(real_table->alias),
cs));
because 'table' is a temp table, and it has no corresponding table
reference. This 'real_table' is NULL, and real_table->alias results
in a crash.
Solution:
In the spirit of MWL#89 prevent the evaluation of expensive predicates
during optimization. This patch prevents the evaluation of expensive
predicates during ref optimization.
sql/item_subselect.h:
Remove unused class member. Not needed for the fix, but noticed now and removed.
Analysis:
During optimization of the subquery, in the call chain:
update_ref_and_keys -> add_key_fields ->
merge_key_fields -> Item_direct_ref::is_null -> Item_cache::is_null
The call to Item_cache::is_null() returns TRUE, which is wrong.
This results in Item_null replacing the field 'f3' in the KEY_FIELD,
then this Item_null is used for index access, producing a wrong result.
The reason why Item_cache::is_null returns wrong result is that
this Item_cache object is a cache of the left operand of IN, and was
updated in Item_in_optimizer::val_int. In MWL#89 the latter method is
called during the execution phase, which is after we optimize the subquery.
Therefore during the optization phase the left operand cache of IN was
not updated.
Solution:
Update the left operand cache during optimization if it is a constant.
This bug fix also discoveres and fixes a wrong IF statement in
convert_constant_item().
On Windows, do not attempt access() for special device names like
CON, PRN etc. access() would return 0, this does not mean that fiile
with this name exists.

- In eliminate_item_equal(), we could end up in a situation where:
= The multiple equality has a constant C1 (and so it is the "head item")
= The join order was such that we've generated "sj_inner_table1=C1" equality,
and now are looking to generate "sj_inner_table2_=..." equality.
When looking for what should be the other member of equality, we run
Item *head_item= current_sjm? current_sjm_head: head;
which sees current_sjm!=NULL, and takes current_sjm_head (which is NULL because
the constant C1 is the head for all cases).
- Fixed in a trivial way: take current_sjm_head if we don't have constant.
- Handle the case of degenerate joins. When join has impossible WHERE clause,
a number of its members, including JOIN::map2table, are not initialized.
Do not try accessing them, detect degenerate joins early.
Problem was setting DEBUG_SYNC twice in a row too fast in the test case; this
could cause the second setting to override the first before the code had time
to react to the first, causing the signal to get lost.
Fixed by waiting for the code to receive the first signal before overwriting
it in the test case.

Analysis:
Build_equal_items_for_cond() rewrites the WHERE clause in such a way,
that it may merge the list join->cond_equal->current_level with the
list of child Items in an AND condition of the WHERE clause.
The place where this is done is:
static COND *build_equal_items_for_cond(THD *thd, COND *cond,
COND_EQUAL *inherited)
{
...
if (and_level)
{
args->concat(&eq_list);
args->concat((List<Item> *)&cond_equal.current_level);
}
...
}
As a result, later transformations on the WHERE clause may change the
structure of the list join->cond_equal->current_level without knowing this.
Specifically in this bug, Item_in_subselect::inject_in_to_exists_cond
creates a new AND of the old WHERE clause and the IN->EXISTS conditions.
It then calls fix_fields() for the new AND. Among other things, fix_fields
flattens all nested ANDs into one by merging the AND argument lists.
When there is a cond_equal for the JOIN, its list of Item_equal objects
is attached to the end of the original AND. When a lower-level AND is
merged into the top-level one, the argument list of the lower-level AND
is concatenated to the list of multiple equalities in the upper-level AND.
As a result, when substitute_for_best_equal_field processes the
multiple equalities, it turns out that the multiple equality list contains
the Items from the lower-level AND which were concatenated to the end of
the join->cond_equal->current_level list. This results in a crash because
this list must not contain any other Items except for the previously found
Item_equal ones.
Solution:
When performing IN->EXIST predicate injection, and the where clause is an
AND, detach the list of Item_equal objects before calling fix_fields on
the injected where clause.
After fix_fields is done, reattach back the multiple equalities list to
the end of the argument list of the new AND.
The function test_quick_select by mistake did not update the value
of table->quick_condition_rows for index intersection scans though
the specification explicitly required to do so from any table access
plan once the plan provided a better upper bound for the number of
rows selected from the table. It resulted in a bogus, usually very
big number saved as the cost of the table access. This, in its turn,
in many cases forced the optimizer to make a bad choice of the
execution plan for join queries.

When a view column is referenced in the query an Item_direct_view_ref
object is created that is refers to the Item_field for the column.
All references to the same view column refer to the same Item_field.
Different references can belong to different AND/OR levels and,
as a result, can be included in different Item_equal object.
These Item_equal objects may include different constant objects.
If these constant objects are substituted for the Item_field created
for a view column we have a conflict situation when the second
substitution annuls the first substitution. This leads to
wrong result sets returned by the query. Bug #724942 demonstrates
such an erroneous behaviour.
Test case of the bug #717577 produces wrong result sets because best
equal fields of the multiple equalities built for different OR levels
of the WHERE condition differs. The subsitution for the best equal field
in the second OR branch overwrites the the substitution made for the
first branch.
To avoid such conflicts we have to substitute for the references
to the view columns rather than for the underlying field items.
To make such substitutions possible we have to include into
multiple equalities references to view columns rather than
field items created for such columns.
This patch modifies the Item_equal class to include references
to view columns into multiple equality objects. It also performs
a clean up of the class methods and adds more comments. The methods
of the Item_direct_view_ref class that assist substitutions for
references to view columns has been also added by this patch.
Before sorting HAVING condition is split into two parts,
first part is a table related condition and the rest of is
HAVING part. Extraction of HAVING part does not take into account
the fact that some of conditions might be non-const but
have 'used_tables' == 0 (independent subqueries)
and because of that these conditions are cut off by
make_cond_for_table() function.
The fix is to use (table_map) 0 instead of used_tables in
third argument for make_cond_for_table() function.
It allows to extract elements which belong to sorted
table and in addition elements which are independend
subqueries.

Updated the constructors for ha_partitions to use the common
init_handler_variables functions
Added use of defines for size and offset to get better readability for the code that reads

Analysis:
The wrong result is a consquence of sorting the subquery
result and then selecting only the first row due to the
artificial LIMIT 1 introduced by the fix_fields phase.
Normally, if there is an ORDER BY in a subquery, the ORDER
is removed (Item_in_subselect::select_in_like_transformer),
however if a GROUP BY is transformed into ORDER, this happens
later, after the removal of the ORDER clause of subqueries, so
we end up with a subquery with an ORDER clause, and an artificially
added LIMIT 1.
The reason why the same works in the main 5.3 without MWL#89, is
that the 5.3 performs all subquery transformations, including
IN->EXISTS before JOIN::optimize(). The beginning of JOIN::optimize
does:
if (having || (select_options & OPTION_FOUND_ROWS))
select_limit= HA_POS_ERROR;
which sets the limit back to infinity, thus 5.3 sorts the whole
subquery result, and IN performs the lookup into all subquery result
rows.
Solution:
Sorting of subqueries without LIMIT is meaningless. Since LIMIT in
subqueries is not supported, the patch removes sorting by setting
join->skip_sort_order= true
for each subquery JOIN object. This improves a number of execution
plans to not perform unnecessary sorting at all.

2. Wrong result

so if it's true, we need to call end_io_cache(), to free memory allocated
by init_io_cache(). No matter the value of 'error'. In the bug's scenario,
'error' was set to true in read_sep_field() because
'1' (read from file) isn't suitable to load into a geometric column. Because of
'error', end_io_cache() was not called.
Note: end_io_cache() calls my_b_flush_io_cache(), which will do nothing wrong given
that the file is opened for reads only; see the init_io_cache() call which uses
only those read-only types:
(get_it_from_net) ? READ_NET : (is_fifo ? READ_FIFO : READ_CACHE).
IF the cache were rather used to write to the file, my_b_flush_io_cache() may
write to it, and it may be questionable to write to the file
if 'error' is true. But here there's no problem.
* Now that 'need_end_io_cache' is checked even if 'error' is true, it needs
to be initialized in all cases.
* Bonus: move some variables to the initialization list.

There was a local variable in get_all_tables() to store the
"original" value of the database name as it can get lowercased
depending on the lower_case_table_name value.
get_all_tables() iterates over database names and for each
database iterates over the tables in it.
The "original" db name was assigned in the table names loop.
Thus the first table is ok, but the second and subsequent tables
get the lowercased name from processing the first table.
Fixed by moving the assignment of the original database name
from the inner (table name) to the outer (database name) loop.

ASSERTION TABLE->DB_STAT FAILED IN
SQL_BASE.CC::OPEN_TABLE() DURING I_S Q
This assert could be triggered if a statement requiring a name
lock on a table (e.g. DROP TRIGGER) executed concurrently
with an I_S query which also used the table.
One connection first started an I_S query that opened a given table.
Then another connection started a statement requiring a name lock
on the same table. This statement was blocked since the table was
in use by the I_S query. When the I_S query resumed and tried to
open the table again as part of get_all_tables(), it would encounter
a table instance with an old version number representing the pending
name lock. Since I_S queries ignore version checks and thus pending
name locks, it would try to continue. This caused it to encounter
the assert. The assert checked that the TABLE instance found with a
different version, was a real, open table. However, since this TABLE
instance instead represented a pending name lock, the check would
fail and trigger the assert.
This patch fixes the problem by removing the assert. It is ok for
TABLE::db_stat to be 0 in this case since the TABLE instance can
represent a pending name lock.

Analysis:
There are two code paths through which JOIN::exec may produce
an all-NULL row for an empty result set. One goes via the
function return_zero_rows(), when query processing detectes
early that the where clause is false, the other one is via
do_select() in the case of join execution.
In the case of do_select(), the problem was that the executioner
didn't set TABLE::null_row to 1. As result when sending the only
result row, the evaluation of each field didn't detect that all
non-aggregated fields are NULL, because Field::is_null returned
true, after checking that field->table->null_row was false.
Given that the each non-aggregated field was not considered NULL,
select_result::send_data sent whatever was in the buffer of each
field. However, since there was no actual data in the field buffer,
send_data() accessed and sent whatever junk was in the field's
data buffer.
Solution:
Similar to the analogous case in return_zero_rows() mark all
tables that their current row is NULL before sending the
artificailly created NULL row.

When executing row-ordered-retrieval index merge,
the handler was cloned, but it used the wrong
memory root, so instead of allocating memory
on the thread/query's mem_root, it used the table's

closed.
Solution was to ensure that memory used during cloning
of a handler was allocated from the correct memory root.
This was implemented by fixing handler::clone() to also
take a name argument, so it can be used with partitioning.
And in ha_partition only allocate the ha_partition's ref, and
call the original ha_partition partitions clone() and set at cloned

Analysis:
A query with implicit grouping is one with aggregate functions and
no GROUP BY clause. MariaDB inherits from MySQL an SQL extenstion
that allows mixing aggregate functions with non-aggregate fields.
If a query with such mixed select clause produces an empty result
set, the meaning of aggregate functions is well defined - either
NULL (MIN, MAX, etc.), or 0 (count(*)). However the non-aggregated
fields must also have some value, and the only reasonable value in
the case of empty result is NULL.
The cause of the many wrong results was that if a field is declared
as non-nullable (e.g. because it is a PK or NOT NULL), the semantic
analysis and the optimization phases treat this field as non-nullable,
and generate all related query plan elements based on this assumption.
Later during execution, these incorrectly configured/generated query
plan elements result in a wrong result because the selected fields
are not null due to the not-null assumption during optimization.
Solution:
Detect before the context analysys phase that a query uses implicit
grouping with mixed aggregates/non-aggregates, and set all fields
as nullable. The parser already walks the SELECT clause, and
already sets Item::with_sum_func for Items that reference aggreagate
functions. The patch adds a symmetric Item::with_field so that all
Items that reference an Item_field are marked during their
construction at parse time in the same way as with aggregate function
use.

The slave was not able to find the correct row in the innodb
table, because the row fetched from the innodb table would not
match the before image. This happened because the (don't care)
bytes in the NULLed fields would change once the row was stored
in the storage engine (from zero to the default value). This
would make bulk memory comparison (using memcmp) to fail.
We fix this by taking a preventing measure and avoiding memcmp
for tables that contain nullable fields. Therefore, we protect
the slave search routine from engines that return arbitrary
values for don't care bytes (in the nulled fields). Instead, the
slave thread will only check null_bits and those fields that are
not set to NULL when comparing the before image against the
storage engine row.

The problem was that server didn't check resulting size of prepared
statement argument which was set using mysql_send_long_data() API.
By calling mysql_send_long_data() several times it was possible
to create overly big string and thus force server to allocate
memory for it. There was no way to limit this allocation.
The solution is to add check for size of result string against
value of max_long_data_size start-up parameter. When intermediate
string exceeds max_long_data_size value an appropriate error message
is emitted.
We can't use existing max_allowed_packet parameter for this purpose
since its value is limited by 1GB and therefore using it as a limit
for data set through mysql_send_long_data() API would have been an
incompatible change. Newly introduced max_long_data_size parameter
gets value from max_allowed_packet parameter unless its value is
specified explicitly. This new parameter is marked as deprecated
and will be eventually replaced by max_allowed_packet parameter.

sql/sql_prepare.cc:
Added error handler class Set_longdata_error_handler.
This handler is used to catch any errors that can be
generated during execution of Item_param::set_longdata().
Source code snippet that makes checking for statement's state
during statement execution is moved from Prepared_statement::execute()
to Prepared_statement::execute_loop() in order not to call
set_parameters() when statement has failed during
set_long_data() execution. If this hadn't been done
the call to set_parameters() would have failed.
tests/mysql_client_test.c:
A testcase for the bug #56976 was added.
Analysis (BUG#719198):
The assert failed because the execution code for
partial matching is designed with the assumption that
NULLs on the left side are detected as early as possible,
and a NULL result is returned before any lookups are
performed at all.
However, in the case of an Item_cache object on the left
side, null was not detected properly, because detection
was done via Item::is_null(), which is not implemented at
all for Item_cache, and resolved to the default Item::is_null()
which always returns FALSE.
Solution:
Imlpement Item::is_null().
******
Analysis (BUG#730604):
The method Item_field::is_null() determines if an item is NULL from its
Item_field::field object. However, for Item_fields that represent internal
temporary tables, Item_field::field represents the field of the original
table that was the source for the temporary table (in this case t1.f3).
Both in the committed test case, and in the original bug report the current
value of t1.f3 is not NULL. This results in an incorrect count of NULLs
for this column. As a consequence, all related Ordered_key buffers are
allocated with incorrect sizes. Depending on the exact query and data,
these incorrect sizes result in various crashes or failed asserts.
Solution:
The correct value of the current field of the internal temp table is
in Item_field::result_field. This value is determined by
Item::is_null_result().

Two problems:
* Item_func_convert_tz() did not tell args[0] that it needs
TIME_NO_ZERO_IN_DATE result
* Item_func_timediff did not respect fuzzy_date limitations,
truncated seconds when casting to signed long, resulting in
invalid time value (hours, seconds = (uint)-1).
Analysis:
The assert failed because the execution code for

Solution:
Use the property Item::null_value instead of is_null(), which
is properly updated for Item_cache objects as well.

* NOT_FIXED_DEC now create hires fields, not old ones.
As a result, temp tables preserve microseconds (on DISTINCT, GROUP BY)
* I_S tables force decimals=0 on temporal types (backward compatibility)
* Item_func_coalesce calculates decimals for temporal types
* no precision for TIME/DATETIME in CAST means 0, not NOT_FIXED_DEC
* addtime/timediff calculate decimals from arguments (not NOT_FIXED_DEC)

If join condition is of the form <t2.key>=<t1.no_key> then the server
performs no index look-ups when looking for matching rows of t2 for
the rows from t1 with t1.no_key=NULL. It happens because the function
add_not_null_conds() injects an additional condition of the form
IS NOT NULL(<t1.no_key>) into the WHERE condition.
However if the join condition was of the form <t.key>=<outer_ref> no
additional null rejecting predicate was generated. This could lead
to extra records in the result set if the value of <outer_ref> happened
to be NULL.
The new code injects null rejecting predicates of the form
IS NOT NULL(<outer_ref>) and evaluates them before the first row
the subquery is constructed.

- put the code that sets HA_NULL_PART bit back
- Fix test_if_ref/part_of_refkey() so that
= NULL-ability of lookup columns does not prevent the equality
from being removed (we now have early/late NULLs filtering which
will filter out NULL values)
= equality is not removed if it is ref_or_null access, and the value
of the lookup column can alternate between the lookup value and NULL.
The bug was a result of the fix for bug 668644 that turned out to be
not quite correct. A problem appeared with HAVING conditions containing
more than one predicate. If a query with an ORDER BY clause uses
such HAVING condition and the required order can be obtained with
a range/index scan then the HAVING condition has to be pushed into
two different formulas (items). To be able to do it we have to create
a copy of the ANDOR structure of the pushed condition.
- The problem was that Mrr_ordered_index_reader's interrupt_read() and resume_read() would
save and restore 1) index tuple 2) the rowid (as bytes returned by handler->position()). Clustered
primary key columns were not saved/restored.
They are not explicitly present in the index tuple (i.e. table->key_info[secondary_key].key_parts
doesn't list them), but they are actually there, in particular
table->field[clustered_primary_key_member].part_of_key(secondary_key) == 1. Index condition pushdown
code [correctly] uses the latter as inidication that pushed index condition can refer to clustered PK
members.
The fix was to make interrupt_read()/resume_read() to save/restore clustered primary key members as well,
so that we get correct values for them when evaluating pushed index condition.
[3rd attempt: remove the debugging aids, fix comments in testcase]
Analysis:
The reason for the crash was that the inner subquery was executed
via a scan on a final temporary table applied after all other
operations. This final operation is implemented by changing the
contents of the JOIN object of the subquery to represent a table
scan over the temp table. At the same time query optimization of
the outer subquery required evaluation of the inner subquery, which
happened before the actual EXPLAIN. The evaluation left the JOIN
object of the inner subquery in the changed state, where it represented
a table scan over a temp table, and EXPLAIN crashed because the temp
table is not associated with any table reference (TABLE_LIST object).
The reason the JOIN was not restored was because its saving/restoration
was controlled by the join->select_lex->uncacheable flag, which was
not set in the case of materialization.
Solution:
In the methods Item_in_subselect::[single | row]_value_transformer() set:
select_lex->uncacheable|= UNCACHEABLE_EXPLAIN;
In addition, for symmetry, change:
master_unit->uncacheable|= UNCACHEABLE_EXPLAIN;
instead of UNCACHEABLE_DEPENDENT because if a subquery was not
dependent initially, the changed methods do not change this
fact. The subquery may later become correlated if it is transformed
to an EXISTS query, but it may stay uncorrelated if executed via
materialization.

Fixing wrong usage of DBUG_ASSERT.
In non-debug version thd_init_client_charset

- Make DsMrr_impl::dsmrr_init() handle the case of
1. 1st MRR scan using DS-MRR strategy (i.e. doing key sorting and rowid sorting)
2. 2nd MRR scan getting a buffer that's too small to fit one key element
and one rowid element, and so falling back to default MRR implementation
In this case, dsmrr_init() is invoked with {primary_handler, secondary_handler}
initialized for DS-MRR scan and have to reset them to be initialized for the
default MRR scan.
