2cfe32ae42 Fix Bug#32831: libmysql should be built with all charsets
Add #define HAVE_CHARSET_name in config-win.h for all character sets that MySQL
supports. Add comments to config/ac-macros/character_sets.m4 and config-win.h
so hopefully they will be updated in sync.

8f500c522b Bug#38522: 5 seconds delay when closing application using embedded server
The problem here is that embedded server starts handle_thread manager
thread on mysql_library_init() does not stop it on mysql_library_end().
At shutdown, my_thread_global_end() waits for thread count to become 0,
but since we did not stop the thread it will give up after 5 seconds.

Solution is to move shutdown for handle_manager thread from kill_server()
(mysqld specific) to clean_up() that is used by both embedded and mysqld.

This patch also contains some refactorings - to avoid duplicate code,
start_handle_manager() and stop_handle_manager() functions are introduced.
Unused variables are eliminated. handle_manager does not rely on global
variable abort_loop anymore to stop (abort_loop is not set for embedded).

Note: Specifically on Windows and when using DBUG version of libmysqld,
the complete solution requires removing obsolete code my_thread_init()
from my_thread_var(). This has a side effect that a DBUG statement
after my_thread_end() can cause thread counter to be incremented, and
embedded will hang for some seconds. Or worse, my_thread_init() will
crash if critical sections have been deleted by the global cleanup
routine that runs in a different thread.

This patch also fixes and revert prior changes for Bug#38293
"Libmysqld crash in mysql_library_init if language file missing".

Root cause of the crash observed in Bug#38293 was bug in my_thread_init()
described above

  - new functions start_handle_manager() and stop_handle_manager()
  - move manager_thread_in_use variable to sql_manager.cc and made

4d3f05b09b Bug#38293 Libmysqld crash in mysql_library_init if language file missing
That's a Win-specific error.
When we create libmysqld.dll we have many libraries like mysys, dbug,
strings, etc linked into that dll, so the application built upon
this library shouldn't link these libraries to itself, rather use
    those inside the dll.

Fixed by redirecting calls into the libmysqld.dll

8d108cb53b Bug#39571 abi_check Does not create all prerequisites
The abi_check target instroduced as part of WL#4380 verifies
changes to mysql.h. mysql.h in turn includes mysql_version.h.
mysql_version.h is a file that is generated during the configure
phase. We must ensure that mysql_version.h is cleaned only during
distclean and not during clean.

include/Makefile.am:
This file contains the following changes

  1) Moves the cleaning of mysql_version.h from the clean
     phase to the distclean phase.

  2) Removes mysql_version.h.in from noinst_HEADERS, this
entry was reduntant since by virtue of inclusion of
     mysql_version.h mysql_version.h.in is already included.

e6fa9496f5 Bug#38477: my_pthread_setprio can change dispatch class on Solaris, not just priority
The problem is that the function used by the server to increase
the thread's priority (pthread_setschedparam) has the unintended
side-effect of changing the calling thread scheduling policy,
possibly overwriting a scheduling policy set by a sysadmin.

The solution is to rely on the pthread_setschedprio function, if
available, as it only changes the scheduling priority and does not
change the scheduling policy. This function is usually available on
Solaris and Linux, but it use won't work by default on Linux as the
the default scheduling policy only accepts a static priority 0 -- this
is acceptable for now as priority changing on Linux is broken anyway.

configure.in:
Check for the existence of the pthread_setschedprio function.
include/my_pthread.h:
Use the pthread_setschedprio function to set the thread priority
  if the function is available.

e405ab1626 Bug#38941: fast mutexes in MySQL 5.1 have mutex contention when calling random()
The problem is that MySQL's 'fast' mutex implementation uses the
random() routine to determine the spin delay. Unfortunately, the
routine interface is not thead-safe and some implementations (eg:
glibc) might use a internal lock to protect the RNG state, causing
excessive locking contention if lots of threads are spinning on
a MySQL's 'fast' mutex. The code was also misusing the value
of the RAND_MAX macro, this macro represents the largest value
that can be returned from the rand() function, not random().

The solution is to use the quite simple Park-Miller random number
generator. The initial seed is set to 1 because the previously used
generator wasn't being seeded -- the initial seed is 1 if srandom()
is not called.

Futhermore, the 'fast' mutex implementation has several shortcomings
and provides no measurable performance benefit. Therefore, its use is
not recommended unless it provides directly measurable results.

include/my_pthread.h:
Add field to keep the RNG state.
mysys/thr_mutex.c:
Use a palliative per-mutex rng state to determine the spin delay.
The RNG is not thread-safe but jumping a few sequences in the RNG
  is harmless.

2ed99fbe1c Bug#37958 - test main.plugin crash on Mac OS X when selecting from EXAMPLE engine.
This patch contains fixes for two problems:

1. As originally reported, the server crashed on Mac OS X when trying to access
an EXAMPLE table after the EXAMPLE plugin was installed.

It turned out that the dynamically loaded EXAMPLE plugin called the
function hash_earch() from a Mac OS X system library, instead of
   hash_earch() from MySQL's mysys library. Makefile.am in storage/example
does not include libmysys. So the Mac OS X linker arranged the hash_search()
function to be linked to the system library when the shared object is
   loaded.

One possible solution would be to include libmysys into the linkage of
dynamic plugins. But then we must have a libmysys.so, which must be
used by the server too. This could have a minimal performance impact,
but foremost the change seems to bee too risky at the current state of
   MySQL 5.1.

The selected solution is to rename MySQL's hash_search() to my_hash_search()
like it has been done before with hash_insert() and hash_reset().

Since this is the third time, we need to rename a hash_*() function,
I did renamed all hash_*() functions to my_hash_*().

To avoid changing a zillion calls to these functions, and announcing
this to hundreds of developers, I added defines that map the old names
   to the new names.

This change is in hash.h and hash.c.

2. The other problem was improper implementation of the handlerton-to-plugin
mapping. We use a fixed-size array to hold a plugin reference for each
handlerton. On every install of a handler plugin, we allocated a new slot
of the array. On uninstall we did not free it. After some uninstall/install
cycles the array overflowed. We did not check for overflow.

One fix is to check for overflow to stop the crashes.

Another fix is to free the array slot at uninstall and search for a free slot
   at plugin install.

   This change is in handler.cc.

include/hash.h:
Bug#37958 - test main.plugin crash on Mac OS X when selecting from EXAMPLE engine.
  Renamed hash_*() functions to my_hash_*().
Added defines that map old names to new names.

0406d409ea Bug#34306: Can't make copy of log tables when server binary log is enabled
The problem is that when statement-based replication was enabled,
statements such as INSERT INTO .. SELECT FROM .. and CREATE TABLE
.. SELECT FROM need to grab a read lock on the source table that
does not permit concurrent inserts, which would in turn be denied
if the source table is a log table because log tables can't be
locked exclusively.

The solution is to not take such a lock when the source table is
a log table as it is unsafe to replicate log tables under statement
based replication. Furthermore, the read lock that does not permits
concurrent inserts is now only taken if statement-based replication
is enabled and if the source table is not a log table.

include/thr_lock.h:
Introduce yet another lock type that my get upgraded depending
on the binary log format. This is not a optimal solution but
  can be easily improved later.

sql/mysql_priv.h:
  Export new function.
sql/mysqld.cc:
  Remove using_update_log.
sql/sql_base.cc:
Introduce function that returns the appropriate read lock type
depending on how the statement is going to be replicated. It will
only take a TL_READ_NO_INSERT log if the binary is enabled and the
binary log format is statement-based and the table is not a log table.
sql/sql_parse.cc:
  Remove using_update_log.
sql/sql_update.cc:
Use new function to choose read lock type.
sql/sql_yacc.yy:
The lock type is now decided at open_tables time. This old behavior was
actually misleading as the binary log format can be dynamically switched
and this would not change for statements that have already been parsed
when the binary log format is changed (ie: prepared statements).

fb8f32d077 Bug#37003 Tests sporadically crashes with embedded server
The problem was that when a embedded linked version of mysqltest
crashed there was no way to obtain a stack trace if no core file
is available. Another problem is that the embedded version of
libmysql was not behaving (crash) the same as the non-embedded with
respect to sending commands to a explicitly closed connection.

72b74d5812 WL#4380
added a rule that use gcc to generate preprocessor output (gcc -E)
that can be then compared to a already generated output using
the diff utility.

Ran make test on the repository to verify changes.

Makefile.am:
Added a rule for checking that the abi/api has not changed.

The following steps are followed in the rule in makefile.am

   1) Generate preprocessor output for the files that need to
be tested for abi/api changes. use -nostdinc to prevent
generation of preprocessor output for system headers. This
results in messages in stderr saying that these headers
were not found. Redirect the stderr output to /dev/null
      to prevent seeing these messages.
   2) sed the output to remove blank lines and lines that begin
with # (The header information is retained to enable easy
analysis of abi diffs at a later stage).
   3) diff the generated file and the canons (.pp files already in
      the repository).
   4) delete the .out file that is generated.

If the diff fails, the generated file is not removed. This will
be useful for analysis of ABI differences (e.g. using a visual
   diff tool).

A ABI change that causes a build to fail will always be
accompanied by new canons (.out files). The .out files that
are not removed will be replaced as the new .pp files.

e.g. If include/mysql/plugin.h has an ABI change then this
rule would leave a include/mysql/plugin.out file.

A developer with a justified API change will then do a
   mv include/mysql/plugin.out include/mysql/plugin.pp to
replace the old canons with the new ones.
configure.in:
  1) Removed the part of the file that was icheck related.

  2) Added an entry for the configure variable DIFF
include/mysql.h.pp:
The pre-processor output canon file for include/mysql.h
include/mysql/plugin.h.pp:
The pre-processor output canon file for include/mysql/plugin.h
include/mysql_h.ic:
since the icheck target has been removed, this file need
no longer be present in the repository
sql/mysql_priv.h.pp:
The pre-processor output canon file for sql/mysql_priv.h

02c901ee5e Bug#27430 "Crash in subquery code when in PS and table DDL changed after
PREPARE", review fixes:
- make the patch follow the specification of WL#4166 and remove
the new error that was originally introduced.
Now the client never gets an error from reprepare, unless it failed.
I.e. even if the statement at hand returns a completely different
result set, this is not considered a server error.
The C API library, that can not handle this situation, was modified to
return a client error.
Added additional test coverage.

include/errmsg.h:
Add a new client side error: now when we automatically
reprepare a statement, the new result set may contain a different
  number of columns.
include/mysql_com.h:
Add a new server status to be sent to the client if the
number of columns in the result set is different.
libmysql/errmsg.c:
  Add a new error message.
libmysql/libmysql.c:
Make the client library robust against a result set that
contains a different number of columns from prepare time.
Previously that could never happen, and we simply had an assert.
That means in particular that all clients are advised to upgrade
with transition to 5.1, if they are using prepared statements C API.
Make mysql_stmt_store_result() and mysql_stmt_execute() robust against
"broken" statement handles (those that have an error).
sql/sql_parse.cc:
Clear transient server status flags at start of statement more
  systematically.
sql/share/errmsg.txt:
Remove an error that is unused and is not part of any public release.
sql/sql_prepare.cc:
Instead of returning an error in case the number of result set columns
has changed, simply update the client in server status.
That will allow modern clients automatically recover from an error.
tests/mysql_client_test.c:
Add additional coverage to the cases when the number of result
set columns changed as a result of reprepare.
Cover conversion and truncation of result set columns.

5b8cdbf4a6 Fixed bug#36006: Optimizer does table scan for SELECT COUNT(*)
for ENGINE=MRG_MYISAM (should be optimized out).

Before WL#3281 MERGE engine had the HA_NOT_EXACT_COUNT flag
unset, and it worked with COUNT optimization as desired.
After the removal of the HA_NOT_EXACT_COUNT flag neither
HA_STATS_RECORDS_IS_EXACT (opposite to former HA_NOT_EXACT_COUNT
flag) nor modern HA_HAS_RECORDS flag were not added to MERGE
table flag mask.

a63dde5a5b Tentative implementation of
WL#4165 Prepared statements: validation
WL#4166 Prepared statements: automatic re-prepare
Fixes
Bug#27430 Crash in subquery code when in PS and table DDL changed after PREPARE
Bug#27690 Re-execution of prepared statement after table was replaced with a view crashes
Bug#27420 A combination of PS and view operations cause error + assertion on shutdown

The basic idea of the patch is to keep track of table metadata between
prepared statement prepare and execute. If some table used in the statement
has changed, the prepared statement is re-prepared before execution.

See WL#4165 and WL#4166 contents and comments in the code for details
of the implementation.

include/my_global.h:
Remove 'register' keyword to avoid warnings when swapping large structures
that don't fit into a register. Any modern compiler is capable of placing
a variable in a register when that would benefit performance.
mysql-test/r/ps_1general.result:
Update test results: since now we re-prepare automatically,
more correct results are produced in prepare-ddl-execute scenario.
mysql-test/r/query_cache_merge.result:
Ensure that the table definition cache is large enough for
the test to pass in --ps-protocol
mysql-test/r/trigger.result:
Update test results to reflect automatic statement reprepare.
mysql-test/t/disabled.def:
  Enable ps_ddl.test, which now passes.
mysql-test/t/ps_1general.test:
Since now we re-execute prepared statements after DDL successfully,
change the test to produce repeatable results. Remove expectancy of
an error in one place where now we automatically reprepare the prepared
  statement.
mysql-test/t/query_cache_merge.test:
Ensure the table definition cache is large enough for the test to pass
  in --ps-protocol
mysql-test/t/trigger.test:
  Sinc
sql/item.cc:
Implement Item_param "copy" functionality, used at re-prepare of
  a prepared statement.
We copy the type of the original parameter, and move the assigned value,
if any. Sic, the value is "moved", since it can be quite big --
e.g. in case we deal with a LONG DATA parameter.
It's essential to move the value from the old parameter since
at the time of re-prepare the client packet with the necessary information
  may be not available.
sql/item.h:
Declare a new method used for reprepare.
sql/my_decimal.h:
Implement "swap()" functionality of class my_decimal to be
able to easily swap two decimal values.
sql/mysql_priv.h:
  Declare enum_metadata_type.
sql/mysqld.cc:
Implement a status variable for the number of reprepared statements.
sql/sql_base.cc:
  Implement metadata version validation.
sql/share/errmsg.txt:
Add two new error messages: ER_NEED_REPREPARE and ER_PS_REBIND.
The first error (theoretically) never reaches the user.
It is issued by the metadata validation framework when a metadata version
has changed between prepare and execute. Later on it's intercepted
and the statement is automatically re-prepared. Only if the error
has occurred repeatedly MAX_REPREPARE_ATTEMTS (3) times do we
  return it to the user.

The second error is issued when after re-prepare we discover
that the metadata we sent over to the client using the binary
protocol differs drammatically from the new result set metadata
that the reprepared statement produces (e.g. number of result
  set columns is different).
sql/sql_class.cc:
  Implement metadata version validation framework.
sql/sql_class.h:
Declarations for metadata version validation framework.
sql/sql_parse.cc:
Mark commands for which we must invalidate and reprepare a prepared
  statement when metadata has changed.
sql/sql_prepare.cc:
Implement WL#4165 and WL#4166 (limited support of metadata validation
  and re-prepare).
sql/table.h:
  Implement metadata validation.
tests/mysql_client_test.c:
Add a test case for WL#4166
