This patch is the result of running
run-clang-tidy -fix -header-filter=.* -checks='-*,modernize-use-equals-default' .
Code style changes have been done on top. The result of this change
leads to the following improvements:
1. Binary size reduction.
* For a -DBUILD_CONFIG=mysql_release build, the binary size is reduced by
~400kb.
* A raw -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release reduces the binary size by ~1.4kb.
2. Compiler can better understand the intent of the code, thus it leads
to more optimization possibilities. Additionally it enabled detecting
unused variables that had an empty default constructor but not marked
so explicitly.
Particular change required following this patch in sql/opt_range.cc
result_keys, an unused template class Bitmap now correctly issues
unused variable warnings.
Setting Bitmap template class constructor to default allows the compiler
to identify that there are no side-effects when instantiating the class.
Previously the compiler could not issue the warning as it assumed Bitmap
class (being a template) would not be performing a NO-OP for its default
constructor. This prevented the "unused variable warning".
This commit is based on the work of Michal Schorm, rebased on the
earliest MariaDB version.

This task involves the implementation for the optimizer trace.
This feature produces a trace for any SELECT/UPDATE/DELETE/,
which contains information about decisions taken by the optimizer during
the optimization phase (choice of table access method, various costs,
transformations, etc). This feature would help to tell why some decisions were
taken by the optimizer and why some were rejected.
Trace is session-local, controlled by the @@optimizer_trace variable.
To enable optimizer trace we need to write:
set @@optimizer_trace variable= 'enabled=on';
To display the trace one can run:
SELECT trace FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.OPTIMIZER_TRACE;
This task also involves:
MDEV-18489: Limit the memory used by the optimizer trace
introduces a switch optimizer_trace_max_mem_size which limits
the memory used by the optimizer trace. This was implemented by
Sergei Petrunia.
This was done to make thing consistent. It gives the additional benefit
that EXPLAIN EXTENDED now treat null_tables like constant's and replaces
columns with NULL, in a similar way that it replaces columns with constants
for constant tables.
- Null tables are tables where all columns are always NULL. The most common
NULL TABLE is a table used in a LEFT_JOIN that is never true.
- All result changes comes from replacing columns with NULL for null_tables.
- "Impossible where" is now also shows constants for const columns.
- Removed duplicated s->type= JT_CONST
- Reset found_const_table_map when JOIN is created (safety fix)
- Added sql/mariadb.h file that should be included first by files in sql
directory, if sql_plugin.h is not used (sql_plugin.h adds SHOW variables
that must be done before my_global.h is included)
- Removed a lot of include my_global.h from include files
- Removed include's of some files that my_global.h automatically includes
- Removed duplicated include's of my_sys.h
- Replaced include my_config.h with my_global.h
Benefits of this patch:
- Removed a lot of calls to strlen(), especially for field_string
- Strings generated by parser are now const strings, less chance of
accidently changing a string
- Removed a lot of calls with LEX_STRING as parameter (changed to pointer)
- More uniform code
- Item::name_length was not kept up to date. Now fixed
- Several bugs found and fixed (Access to null pointers,
access of freed memory, wrong arguments to printf like functions)
- Removed a lot of casts from (const char*) to (char*)
Changes:
- This caused some ABI changes
- lex_string_set now uses LEX_CSTRING
- Some fucntions are now taking const char* instead of char*
- Create_field::change and after changed to LEX_CSTRING
- handler::connect_string, comment and engine_name() changed to LEX_CSTRING
- Checked printf() related calls to find bugs. Found and fixed several
errors in old code.
- A lot of changes from LEX_STRING to LEX_CSTRING, especially related to
parsing and events.
- Some changes from LEX_STRING and LEX_STRING & to LEX_CSTRING*
- Some changes for char* to const char*
- Added printf argument checking for my_snprintf()
- Introduced null_clex_str, star_clex_string, temp_lex_str to simplify
code
- Added item_empty_name and item_used_name to be able to distingush between
items that was given an empty name and items that was not given a name
This is used in sql_yacc.yy to know when to give an item a name.
- select table_name."*' is not anymore same as table_name.*
- removed not used function Item::rename()
- Added comparision of item->name_length before some calls to
my_strcasecmp() to speed up comparison
- Moved Item_sp_variable::make_field() from item.h to item.cc
- Some minimal code changes to avoid copying to const char *
- Fixed wrong error message in wsrep_mysql_parse()
- Fixed wrong code in find_field_in_natural_join() where real_item() was
set when it shouldn't
- ER_ERROR_ON_RENAME was used with extra arguments.
- Removed some (wrong) ER_OUTOFMEMORY, as alloc_root will already
give the error.
TODO:
- Check possible unsafe casts in plugin/auth_examples/qa_auth_interface.c
- Change code to not modify LEX_CSTRING for database name
(as part of lower_case_table_names)
that the call-back comparison function returns a positive
number when arg1 < arg2, and a negative number when arg1 > arg2.
This is not in line with other implementation of sorting
algorithm.
Changed bubble_sort: now a negative result from the comparison
function means that arg1 < arg2, and positive result means
that arg1 > arg2.
Changed accordingly all call-back functions that are used as
parameters in the call of bubble_sort.
Added a test case to check the proper sorting of window functions.
- Part 3: Adding mem_root to push_back() and push_front()
Other things:
- Added THD as an argument to some partition functions.
- Added memory overflow checking for XML tag's in read_xml()
- Added mem_root to all calls to new Item
- Added private method operator new(size_t size) to Item to ensure that
we always use a mem_root when creating an item.
This saves use once call to current_thd per Item creation
Added mandatory thd parameter to Item (and all derivative classes) constructor.
Added thd parameter to all routines that may create items.
Also removed "current_thd" from Item::Item. This reduced number of
pthread_getspecific() calls from 290 to 177 per OLTP RO transaction.
MDEV-6971 Bad results with joins comparing TIME and DOUBLE/DECIMAL columns
Disallow using indexes on non-temporal columns to optimize
ref access, range access and table elimination when the counterpart's
cmp_type is TIME_RESULT, e.g.:
SELECT * FROM t1 WHERE indexed_int_column=time_expression;
Only index on a temporal column can be used to optimize temporal comparison
operations.
This is port of fix for MySQL BUG#17647863.

Fix two problems in table elimination code:
- Before marking a "value" as bound, check if it is already bound. Marking the
same value as bound twice could confuse a module that depends on this value,
because Dep_module_XXX use counters to know when they become bound.
- When checking whether field is part of a key, ignore "extended keys" property.
includes:
* remove some remnants of "Bug#14521864: MYSQL 5.1 TO 5.5 BUGS PARTITIONING"
* introduce LOCK_share, now LOCK_ha_data is strictly for engines
* rea_create_table() always creates .par file (even in "frm-only" mode)
* fix a 5.6 bug, temp file leak on dummy ALTER TABLE
- Make eliminate_tables_for_list() take into account that it is not possible
to eliminate a table if it is used in the upper-side ON expressions. Example:
xxx JOIN (t1 LEFT JOIN t2 ON cond ) ON func(t2.columns)
Here it would eliminate t2 which is not possible because of use of t2.columns.

Both these two bugs happened due to the following problem.
When a view column is referenced in the query an Item_direct_view_ref
object is created that is refers to the Item_field for the column.
All references to the same view column refer to the same Item_field.
Different references can belong to different AND/OR levels and,
as a result, can be included in different Item_equal object.
These Item_equal objects may include different constant objects.
If these constant objects are substituted for the Item_field created
for a view column we have a conflict situation when the second
substitution annuls the first substitution. This leads to
wrong result sets returned by the query. Bug #724942 demonstrates
such an erroneous behaviour.
Test case of the bug #717577 produces wrong result sets because best
equal fields of the multiple equalities built for different OR levels
of the WHERE condition differs. The subsitution for the best equal field
in the second OR branch overwrites the the substitution made for the
first branch.
To avoid such conflicts we have to substitute for the references
to the view columns rather than for the underlying field items.
To make such substitutions possible we have to include into
multiple equalities references to view columns rather than
field items created for such columns.
This patch modifies the Item_equal class to include references
to view columns into multiple equality objects. It also performs
a clean up of the class methods and adds more comments. The methods
of the Item_direct_view_ref class that assist substitutions for
references to view columns has been also added by this patch.

Made sure that the optimal fields are used by TABLE_REF objects
when building index access keys to joined tables.
Fixed a bug in the template function that sorts the elements of
a list using the bubble sort algorithm. The bug caused poor
performance of the function. Also added an optimization that
skips comparison with the most heavy elements that has been
already properly placed in the list.
Made the comparison of the fields belonging to the same Item_equal
more granular: fields belonging to the same table are also ordered
according to some rules.
- Changed TABLE->alias to String to get fewer reallocs when alias are used.
- Preallocate some buffers
Changed some String->c_ptr() -> String->ptr() when \0 is not needed.
Fixed wrong usage of String->ptr() when we need a \0 terminated string.
Use my_strtod() instead of my_atof() to avoid having to add \0 to string.
c_ptr() -> c_ptr_safe() to avoid warnings from valgrind.
