3e377fd35b MDEV-15795 Stack exceeded if pthread_attr_setstacksize(&thr_attr,8196) succeeds
on Linux this pthread_attr_setstacksize() fails with EINVAL
"The stack size is less than PTHREAD_STACK_MIN (16384) bytes".

But on FreeBSD it succeeds and causes a crash later, as 8196 is too little.

Let's keep the stack at its default size in the timer thread.

3d6eb7afcf MDEV-25602 get rid of __WIN__ in favor of standard _WIN32
This fixed the MySQL bug# 20338 about misuse of double underscore
prefix __WIN__, which was old MySQL's idea of identifying Windows
Replace it by _WIN32 standard symbol for targeting Windows OS
(both 32 and 64 bit)

Not that connect storage engine is not fixed in this patch (must be
fixed in "upstream" branch)

07e9b13898 mysqld: ignore SIGHUP sent by the kernel
SIGHUP causes debug info in the error log and reload of
logs/privileges/tables/etc. The server should only do it when
a user intentionally sends SUGHUP, not when a parent terminal gets
disconnected or something.

In particular, not ignoring kernel SIGHUP causes FLUSH PRIVILEGES
at some random point during non-systemd Debian upgrades (Debian
restarts mysqld, debian-start script runs mysql_upgrade in the background,
postinit script ends and kernel sends SIGHUP to all background processes
it has started). And during mysql_upgrade privilege tables aren't
necessarily ready to be reloaded.

536215e32f Added DBUG_ASSERT_AS_PRINTF compile flag
If compiling a non DBUG binary with
-DDBUG_ASSERT_AS_PRINTF asserts will be
changed to printf + stack trace (of stack
trace are enabled).

- Changed #ifndef DBUG_OFF to
  #ifdef DBUG_ASSERT_EXISTS
for those DBUG_OFF that was just used to enable
  assert
- Assert checking that could greatly impact
performance where changed to DBUG_ASSERT_SLOW which
  is not affected by DBUG_ASSERT_AS_PRINTF
- Added one extra option to my_print_stacktrace() to
get more silent in case of stack trace printing as
  part of assert.

776df0a366 Bug #11752803 SERVER CRASHES IF MAX_CONNECTIONS DECREASED BELOW
CERTAIN LEVEL

Problem description: mysqld crashes when we update the max_connections
variable to lesser value than the number of currently open connections.

Analysis: The "alarm_queue.max_elements" size will be decided at the
server start time and it will get modified if we change max_connections
value. In the current scenario the value of "alarm_queue.max_elements"
is decremented when the max_connections is set to 2. When updating the
"alarm_queue.max_elements" value we are not updating "max_used_alarms"
value. Hence, instead of getting the warning "thr_alarm queue is full"
it is ending up in asserting the server at the time of inserting new
elements in the queue.

Fix: the fix is to dynamically increase the size of the alarm_queue.
In order to do that, queue_insert_safe() should be used instead if
queue_insert().

8ede0759c3 Remove configuration preprocessor symbols 'THREAD'
and 'THREAD_SAFE_CLIENT'.

As of MySQL 5.5, we no longer support non-threaded
builds. This patch removes all references to the
obsolete THREAD and THREAD_SAFE_CLIENT preprocessor
symbols. These were used to distinguish between
threaded and non-threaded builds.

e63b5546c5 Implementation of MWL#172: Add support for prepared statements to HANDLER READ
It includes speed optimizations for HANDLER READ by caching as much as possible in HANDLER OPEN
Other things:
- Added mysqld option --disable-thr-alarm to be able to benchmark things without thr_alarm
- Changed 'Locked' state to 'System lock' and 'Table lock' (these where used in the code but never shown to end user)
- Better error message if mysql_install_db.sh fails

ecbcddc03d Improved speed of thr_alarm from O(N) to O(1). thr_alarm is used to handle timeouts and kill of connections.
Fixed compiler warnings.
queues.h and queues.c are now based on the UNIREG code and thus made BSD.
Fix code to use new queue() interface. This mostly affects how you access elements in the queue.
If USE_NET_CLEAR is not set, don't clear connection from unexpected characters. This should give a speed up when doing a lot of fast queries.
Fixed some code in ma_ft_boolean_search.c that had not made it from myisam/ft_boolean_search.c

include/queues.h:
  Use UNIREG code base (BSD)
Changed init_queue() to take all initialization arguments.
New interface to access elements in queue
include/thr_alarm.h:
Changed to use time_t instead of ulong (portability)
Added index_in_queue, to be able to remove random element from queue in O(1)
mysys/queues.c:
  Use UNIREG code base (BSD)
init_queue() and reinit_queue() now takes more initialization arguments. (No need for init_queue_ex() anymore)
Now one can tell queue_insert() to store in the element a pointer to where element is in queue. This allows one to remove elements from queue in O(1) instead of O(N)
mysys/thr_alarm.c:
Use new option in queue() to allow fast removal of elements.
  Do less inside LOCK_alarm mutex.
This should give a major speed up of thr_alarm usage when there is many threads
sql/create_options.cc:

f56dd32bf7 Bug#34043: Server loops excessively in _checkchunk() when safemalloc is enabled
Essentially, the problem is that safemalloc is excruciatingly
slow as it checks all allocated blocks for overrun at each
memory management primitive, yielding a almost exponential
slowdown for the memory management functions (malloc, realloc,
free). The overrun check basically consists of verifying some
bytes of a block for certain magic keys, which catches some
simple forms of overrun. Another minor problem is violation
of aliasing rules and that its own internal list of blocks
is prone to corruption.

Another issue with safemalloc is rather the maintenance cost
as the tool has a significant impact on the server code.
Given the magnitude of memory debuggers available nowadays,
especially those that are provided with the platform malloc
implementation, maintenance of a in-house and largely obsolete
memory debugger becomes a burden that is not worth the effort
due to its slowness and lack of support for detecting more
common forms of heap corruption.

Since there are third-party tools that can provide the same
functionality at a lower or comparable performance cost, the
solution is to simply remove safemalloc. Third-party tools
can provide the same functionality at a lower or comparable
performance cost.

The removal of safemalloc also allows a simplification of the
malloc wrappers, removing quite a bit of kludge: redefinition
of my_malloc, my_free and the removal of the unused second
argument of my_free. Since free() always check whether the
supplied pointer is null, redudant checks are also removed.

Also, this patch adds unit testing for my_malloc and moves
my_realloc implementation into the same file as the other
memory allocation primitives.

client/mysqldump.c:
Pass my_free directly as its signature is compatible with the
callback type -- which wasn't the case for free_table_ent.

message:
Bug#35164: Large number of invalid pthread_attr_setschedparam calls
Bug#37536: Thread scheduling causes performance degradation at low thread count
Bug#12702: Long queries take 100% of CPU and freeze other applications under Windows

The problem is that although having threads with different priorities
yields marginal improvements [1] in some platforms [2], relying on some
statically defined priorities (QUERY_PRIOR and WAIT_PRIOR) to play well
(or to work at all) with different scheduling practices and disciplines
is, at best, a shot in the dark as the meaning of priority values may
change depending on the scheduling policy set for the process.

Another problem is that increasing priorities can hurt other concurrent
(running on the same hardware) applications (such as AMP) by causing
starvation problems as MySQL threads will successively preempt lower
priority processes. This can be evidenced by Bug#12702.

The solution is to not change the threads priorities and rely on the
system scheduler to perform its job. This also enables a system admin
to increase or decrease the scheduling priority of the MySQL process,
if intended.

Furthermore, the internal wrappers and code for changing the priority
of threads is being removed as they are now unused and ancient.

1. Due to unintentional side effects. On Solaris this could artificially
help benchmarks as calling the priority changing syscall millions of
times is more beneficial than the actual setting of the priority.

2. Where it actually works. It has never worked on Linux as the default
scheduling policy SCHED_OTHER only accepts the static priority 0.

  Remove unused define.
include/my_pthread.h:
  Remove thread priority changing wrappers.
mysys/my_pthread.c:
Remove thread priority changing wrappers. They do not work properly
and their implementations were incorrectly protected by a check for
  HAVE_PTHREAD_SETSCHEDPARAM.
