Although the C standard mandates that sprintf return the number
of bytes written, some very ancient systems (i.e. SunOS 4)
returned a pointer to the buffer instead. Since these systems
are not supported anymore and are hopefully long dead by now,
simply remove the portability wrapper that dealt with this
discrepancy. The autoconf check was causing trouble with GCC.
Essentially, the problem is that safemalloc is excruciatingly
slow as it checks all allocated blocks for overrun at each
memory management primitive, yielding a almost exponential
slowdown for the memory management functions (malloc, realloc,
free). The overrun check basically consists of verifying some
bytes of a block for certain magic keys, which catches some
simple forms of overrun. Another minor problem is violation
of aliasing rules and that its own internal list of blocks
is prone to corruption.
Another issue with safemalloc is rather the maintenance cost
as the tool has a significant impact on the server code.
Given the magnitude of memory debuggers available nowadays,
especially those that are provided with the platform malloc
implementation, maintenance of a in-house and largely obsolete
memory debugger becomes a burden that is not worth the effort
due to its slowness and lack of support for detecting more
common forms of heap corruption.
Since there are third-party tools that can provide the same
functionality at a lower or comparable performance cost, the
solution is to simply remove safemalloc. Third-party tools
can provide the same functionality at a lower or comparable
performance cost.
The removal of safemalloc also allows a simplification of the
malloc wrappers, removing quite a bit of kludge: redefinition
of my_malloc, my_free and the removal of the unused second
argument of my_free. Since free() always check whether the
supplied pointer is null, redudant checks are also removed.
Also, this patch adds unit testing for my_malloc and moves
my_realloc implementation into the same file as the other
memory allocation primitives.
client/mysqldump.c:
Pass my_free directly as its signature is compatible with the
callback type -- which wasn't the case for free_table_ent.
The problem was that a user could supply supply data in chunks
via the COM_STMT_SEND_LONG_DATA command to prepared statement
parameter other than of type TEXT or BLOB. This posed a problem
since other parameter types aren't setup to handle long data,
which would lead to a crash when attempting to use the supplied
data.
Given that long data can be supplied at any stage of a prepared
statement, coupled with the fact that the type of a parameter
marker might change between consecutive executions, the solution
is to validate at execution time each parameter marker for which
a data stream was provided. If the parameter type is not TEXT or
BLOB (that is, if the type is not able to handle a data stream),
a error is returned.
sql/sql_prepare.cc:
Before converting the parameter data stream, check the type
compatibility.
tests/mysql_client_test.c:

Apart strict-aliasing warnings, fix the remaining warnings
generated by GCC 4.4.4 -Wall and -Wextra flags.
One major source of warnings was the in-house function my_bcmp
which (unconventionally) took pointers to unsigned characters
as the byte sequences to be compared. Since my_bcmp and bcmp
are deprecated functions whose only difference with memcmp is
the return value, every use of the function is replaced with
memcmp as the special return value wasn't actually being used
by any caller.
There were also various other warnings, mostly due to type

code (unreachable) and ignored return values.

strict aliasing violations.
Essentially, the problem is that large parts of the server were
developed in simpler times (last decades, pre C99 standard) when
strict aliasing and compilers supporting such optimizations were
rare to non-existent. Thus, when compiling the server with a modern
compiler that uses strict aliasing rules to perform optimizations,
there are several places in the code that might trigger undefined
behavior.
As evinced by some recent bugs, GCC does a somewhat good of job
misoptimizing such code, but on the other hand also gives warnings
about suspicious code. One problem is that the warnings aren't
always accurate, yet we can't afford to just shut them off as we
might miss real cases. False-positive cases are aggravated mostly
by casts that are likely to trigger undefined behavior.
The solution is to start a cleanup process focused on fixing and
reducing the amount of strict-aliasing related warnings produced
by GCC and others compilers. A good deal of noise reduction can
be achieved by just removing useless casts that are product of
historical cruft and are likely to trigger undefined behavior if
dereferenced.

The server was happily accepting paths in table name in all places a table
name is accepted (e.g. a SELECT). This allowed all users that have some
privilege over some database to read all tables in all databases in all
mysql server instances that the server file system has access to.
Fixed by :
1. making sure no path elements are allowed in quoted table name when
constructing the path (note that the path symbols are still valid in table names
when they're properly escaped by the server).
2. checking the #mysql50# prefixed names the same way they're checked for
path elements in mysql-5.0.
The server was not checking the supplied to COM_FIELD_LIST table name
for validity and compliance to acceptable table names standards.
Fixed by checking the table name for compliance similar to how it's
normally checked by the parser and returning an error message if
it's not compliant.

message:
Bug#989: If DROP TABLE while there's an active transaction, wrong binlog order
WL#4284: Transactional DDL locking
Currently the MySQL server does not keep metadata locks on
schema objects for the duration of a transaction, thus failing
to guarantee the integrity of the schema objects being used
during the transaction and to protect then from concurrent
DDL operations. This also poses a problem for replication as
a DDL operation might be replicated even thought there are
active transactions using the object being modified.
The solution is to defer the release of metadata locks until
a active transaction is either committed or rolled back. This
prevents other statements from modifying the table for the
entire duration of the transaction. This provides commitment
ordering for guaranteeing serializability across multiple
transactions.
- Incompatible change:
If MySQL's metadata locking system encounters a lock conflict,
the usual schema is to use the try and back-off technique to
avoid deadlocks -- this schema consists in releasing all locks
and trying to acquire them all in one go.
But in a transactional context this algorithm can't be utilized
as its not possible to release locks acquired during the course
of the transaction without breaking the transaction commitments.
To avoid deadlocks in this case, the ER_LOCK_DEADLOCK will be
returned if a lock conflict is encountered during a transaction.
Let's consider an example:
A transaction has two statements that modify table t1, then table
t2, and then commits. The first statement of the transaction will
acquire a shared metadata lock on table t1, and it will be kept
utill COMMIT to ensure serializability.
At the moment when the second statement attempts to acquire a
shared metadata lock on t2, a concurrent ALTER or DROP statement
might have locked t2 exclusively. The prescription of the current
locking protocol is that the acquirer of the shared lock backs off
-- gives up all his current locks and retries. This implies that
the entire multi-statement transaction has to be rolled back.
- Incompatible change:
FLUSH commands such as FLUSH PRIVILEGES and FLUSH TABLES WITH READ
LOCK won't cause locked tables to be implicitly unlocked anymore.

sql/sql_parse.cc:
Release metadata locks after implicitly committing a active
transaction, or after explicit commits or rollbacks.
sql/sql_plugin.cc:
Allocate MDL request on the stack as the use of the table
is contained within the function. It will be removed from
the context once close_thread_tables is called at the end
of the function.
sql/sql_prepare.cc:
The problem is that the prepare phase of the CREATE TABLE
statement takes a exclusive metadata lock lock and this can
cause a self-deadlock the thread already holds a shared lock
on the table being that should be created.
The solution is to make the prepare phase take a shared
metadata lock when preparing a CREATE TABLE statement. The
execution of the statement will still acquire a exclusive
lock, but won't cause any problem as it issues a implicit
commit.
After some discussions with stakeholders it has been decided that
metadata locks acquired during a PREPARE statement must be released
once the statement is prepared even if it is prepared within a multi
statement transaction.
sql/sql_servers.cc:
Don't implicitly unlock locked tables. Issue a implicit commit
at the end and unlock tables.
sql/sql_table.cc:
Close table and release metadata locks after a admin operation.
sql/table.h:
The problem is that the prepare phase of the CREATE TABLE
statement takes a exclusive metadata lock lock and this can
cause a self-deadlock the thread already holds a shared lock
on the table being that should be created.
The solution is to make the prepare phase take a shared
metadata lock when preparing a CREATE TABLE statement. The
execution of the statement will still acquire a exclusive
lock, but won't cause any problem as it issues a implicit
commit.
sql/transaction.cc:
Release metadata locks after the implicitly committed due
to a new transaction being started. Also, release metadata
locks acquired after a savepoint if the transaction is rolled
back to the save point.
The problem is that in some cases transaction-long metadata locks
could be released before the transaction was committed. This could
happen when a active transaction was ended by a "START TRANSACTION"
or "BEGIN" statement, in which case the metadata locks would be
released before the actual commit of the active transaction.
The solution is to defer the release of metadata locks to after the
transaction has been implicitly committed. No test case is provided
as the effort to provide one is too disproportional to the size of
the fix.

committer: Davi Arnaut <Davi.Arnaut@Sun.COM>
branch nick: WL#4284
timestamp: Sat 2008-07-26 13:38:20 -0300
message:
WL#4284: Transactional DDL locking
SQL statements' effect on transactions.
Currently the MySQL server and its storage engines are not
capable of rolling back operations that define or modify data
structures (also known as DDL statements) or operations that
alter any of the system tables (the mysql database). Allowing
these group of statements to participate in transactions
is unfeasible at this time (since rollback has no effect
whatsoever on them) and goes against the design of our metadata
locking subsystem.
The solution is to issue implicit commits before and after
those statements execution. This effectively confines each of
those statements to its own special transaction and ensures
that metadata locks taken during this special transaction
are not leaked into posterior statements/transactions.
mysql-test/include/commit.inc:
Alter table rename was not committing the normal transaction at the
end of its execution, and as a consequence, the commit was being
issued in the next DDL command (rename table) that happened to end
the active transaction. Other changes are to take into account the
implicit commits issued before and after the DDL command execution.
mysql-test/include/implicit_commit_helper.inc:
Add auxiliary test that shows if a statement issued a
implicit commit.
mysql-test/r/commit_1innodb.result:
Update test case result.
mysql-test/r/implicit_commit.result:
Test implicit commit behavior of some SQL commands.
mysql-test/t/implicit_commit.test:
Test implicit commit behavior of some SQL commands.
sql/events.cc:
Transaction is now ended before the command execution.
sql/mysql_priv.h:
Add flags array for server commands and remove historical
left over.
sql/sql_class.h:
Add flags to control when to issue implicit commits before and
after a command execution.
sql/sql_delete.cc:
A implicit commit is issued at the end of truncate
statements.
sql/sql_parse.cc:
Mark commands that need implicit commits before and
after their executions. The implicit commits of the
statement and the normal transaction are now issued
regardless of the user access privileges.
sql/sql_table.cc:
A implicit commit is now issued before admin commands.
tests/mysql_client_test.c:
Test that COM_REFRESH issues a implicit commit.

message:
Bug#36004 mysql_stmt_prepare resets the list of warnings
Although the manual says that "the list of messages is reset
for each new statement that uses a table", the list of messages
is being unconditionally reset for prepare commands.
The solution is to enforce that the prepare command will only
reset the message list if the statement being prepared uses
a table or a warning is pushed.
tests/mysql_client_test.c:
Add test case for Bug#36004
- Moved some code from innodb_plugin to xtradb, to ensure that all tests runs
- Did changes in pbxt and maria storage engines becasue of changes in thd->query
- Reverted wrong code in sql_table.cc for how ROW_FORMAT is used.
This is a re-commit of Monty's merge to eliminate an extra commit from
MySQL-5.1.42 that was accidentally included in the merge.
This is a merge of the MySQL 5.1.41 clone-off (clone-5.1.41-build). In
case there are any extra changes done before final MySQL 5.1.41
release, these will need to be merged later before MariaDB 5.1.41
release.

The reason for the bug is that mysqtest as well as other client tools
running in test suite (mysqlbinlog, mysqldump) will first try to connect
whatever database has created shared memory with default base name
"MySQL" and use this. (Same effect could be seen on Unix if mtr would
not care to calculate "port" and "socket" parameter).
The fix ensures that all client tools and running in mtr use unique
per-database shared memory base parameters, so there is no possibility
to clash with already installed one. We use socket name for shared memory
base (it's known to be unique). This shared-memory-base is written to the
MTR config file to the [client] and [mysqld] sections. Fix made also made
sure all client tools understand and correctly handle --shared-memory-base.
Prior to this patch it was not the case for mysqltest, mysqlbinlog and
mysql_client_test.
All new connections done from mtr scripts via connect() will by default
set shared-memory-base. And finally, there is a possibility to force
shared memory or pipe connection and overwrite shared memory/pipe base name
from within mtr scripts via optional PIPE or SHM modifier. This functionality
was manually backported from 6.0

some other minor revisions.
This patch implements:
WL#4264 "Backup: Stabilize Service Interface" -- all the
server prerequisites except si_objects.{h,cc} themselves (they can
be just copied over, when needed).
WL#4435: Support OUT-parameters in prepared statements.
(and all issues in the initial patches for these two
tasks, that were discovered in pushbuild and during testing).
Bug#39519: mysql_stmt_close() should flush all data
associated with the statement.
After execution of a prepared statement, send OUT parameters of the invoked
stored procedure, if any, to the client.
When using the binary protocol, send the parameters in an additional result
set over the wire. When using the text protocol, assign out parameters to
the user variables from the CALL(@var1, @var2, ...) specification.
The following refactoring has been made:
- Protocol::send_fields() was renamed to Protocol::send_result_set_metadata();
- A new Protocol::send_result_set_row() was introduced to incapsulate
common functionality for sending row data.
- Signature of Protocol::prepare_for_send() was changed: this operation
does not need a list of items, the number of items is fully sufficient.
The following backward incompatible changes have been made:
- CLIENT_MULTI_RESULTS is now enabled by default in the client;
- CLIENT_PS_MULTI_RESUTLS is now enabled by default in the client.
include/mysql.h:
Add a new flag to MYSQL_METHODS::flush_use_result
function pointer. This flag determines if all results
should be flushed or only the first one:
- if flush_all_results is TRUE, then cli_flush_use_result()
will read/flush all pending results. I.e. it will read
all packets while server status attribute indicates that
there are more results. This is a new semantic, required
to fix the bug.
- if flush_all_results is FALSE, the old sematic
is preserved -- i.e. cli_flush_use_result() reads data
until first EOF-packet.
include/mysql.h.pp:
Update the ABI with new calls (compatible changes).
include/mysql_com.h:
Add CLIENT_PS_OUT_PARAMS -- a client capability indicating that the client supportsю
libmysql/libmysql.c:
Add mysql_stmt_next_result() -- analogue of mysql_next_result() for binary protocol.
Fix a minor bug in alloc_fields() -- not all members were copied over,
and some only shallow-copied (catalog).
Flush all results in mysql_stmt_close() (Bug#39519).
libmysqld/lib_sql.cc:
Rename send_fields() -> send_result_set_metadata().
Refactoring: change prepare_for_send() so that it accepts only
what it really needs -- a number of elements in the list.
mysql-test/r/ps.result:
Update results: WL#4435.
mysql-test/t/ps.test:
WL#4435: A test case for an SQL-part of the problem.
sql-common/client.c:
Bug#39519.
Implement new functionality in cli_flush_use_result():
if flush_all_delete is TRUE, then it should read/flush
all pending results.
sql/Makefile.am:
Add a new header sql_prepare.h to the list
of build headers.
sql/events.cc:
Rename: Protocol::send_fields() ->
Protocol::send_result_set_metadata().
sql/handler.cc:
Rename: Protocol::send_fields() ->

sql/procedure.h:
Rename: Protocol::send_fields() ->
Protocol::send_result_set_metadata().
sql/protocol.cc:
Move the logic responsible for sending of one result
set row to the Protocol class. Define a template
for end-of-statement action.
Refactoring: change prepare_for_send() so that it accepts
only what it really needs -- a number of elements in the list.
Rename send_fields() to send_result_set_metadata().
sql/protocol.h:
Update with new declarations (WL#4435).
Rename send_fields() -> send_result_set_metadata().
prepare_for_send() only needs the number of columns to send,
and doesn't use the item list - update signature to require
only what's needed.
Add a new protocol type -- Protocol_local.
sql/repl_failsafe.cc:
Rename: Protocol::send_fields() ->
Protocol::send_result_set_metadata().
sql/slave.cc:

Use new method Protocol::send_one_result_set_row().
sql/sql_help.cc:
Rename: Protocol::send_fields() ->
Protocol::send_result_set_metadata().
sql/sql_lex.cc:
Initialize multi_statements variable.
Add a handy constant for empty lex
string.
sql/sql_lex.h:
Add a separate member for a standalone
parsing option - multi-statements support.
sql/sql_list.cc:
sql_list.h is a standalone header now,
no need to include mysql_priv.h.
sql/sql_list.h:
Make sql_list.h a stand-alone header.
sql/sql_parse.cc:
Include sql_prepare.h for prepared
statements- related declarations.
Use a new Protocol template method to end
each statement (send OK, EOF or ERROR to
the client).
sql/sql_prepare.cc:
Implement Execute Direct API (WL#4264),
currently unused. It will be used by the service
interface (Backup).
Use a new header - sql_prepare.h.
Add support for OUT parameters in the
binary and text protocol (prepared statements
only).
sql/sql_prepare.h:
Add a new header to contain (for now)
all prepared statement- external
related declarations.
sql/sql_profile.cc:
Rename: Protocol::send_fields() ->
Protocol::send_result_set_metadata().
sql/sql_repl.cc:
Rename: Protocol::send_fields() ->
Protocol::send_result_set_metadata().
sql/sql_select.cc:
Rename: Protocol::send_fields() ->

sql/sql_string.h:
Add a way to convert a String to LEX_STRING.
sql/sql_table.cc:
Rename: Protocol::send_fields() ->
Protocol::send_result_set_metadata().
sql/sql_update.cc:
Remove an extraneous my_error(). The error
is already reported in update_non_unique_table_error().
sql/sql_yacc.yy:
Support for multi-statements is an independent
property of parsing, not derived from
the protocol type.
tests/mysql_client_test.c:

committer: Konstantin Osipov <konstantin@mysql.com>
branch nick: mysql-6.0-27430
timestamp: Mon 2008-05-26 16:12:28 +0400
message:
Cover four special cases of WL#4166 with tests:
- when the query cache is disabled at the time of prepared statement
reprepare
- when long data parameters are used
- when character_set_connection != character_set_client, and a parameter
conversion takes place
- when parameter data is out of acceptable range, e.g. year 10000 is
supplied as part of MYSQL_TYPE_DATETIME value. The server is supposed
to warn in such case.

CMakeLists.txt files cleanup
- remove SAFEMALLOC and SAFE_MUTEX definitions that were
present in *each* CMakeLists.txt. Instead, put them into top level
CMakeLists.txt, but disable on Windows, because
a) SAFEMALLOC does not add any functionality that is not already
present in Debug C runtime ( and 2 safe malloc one on top of the other
only unnecessarily slows down the server)
b)SAFE_MUTEX does not work on Windows and have been
explicitely disabled on Windows with #undef previously. Fortunately,
ntdll does pretty good job identifying l problems with
CRITICAL_SECTIONs.
DebugBreak()s on using uninited critical section, unlocking unowned
critical section)
-Also, remove occationally used -D_DEBUG (added by compiler
anyway)

Cleanup CMakeLists.txt(s) - remove winsock2 (ws2_32) from
TARGET_LINK_LIBRARIES.
Every exe or dll linked with mysys needs ws2_32, because
mysys uses winsock function WSAStartup in my_init().
However, there is no need to explicitely add ws2_32 to
the list of TARGET_LINK_LIBRARIES multiple times.
Visual Studio comes with a handy pragma that tells linker
to add library. So patch replaces bunch of ws2_32 in
CMakeLists with single pragma comment(lib,"ws2_32")
in my_init.c
Additionally, reference to non-existing "debug" library
has been removed from TARGET_LINK_LIBRARIES. The correct
name of the library is "dbug".

Always use TLS functions instead of __declspec(thread) to access
thread local storage variables.
The change removes the necessity to recomplile the same source
files twice - with USE_TLS for DLLs and without USE_TLS for EXEs.
Real benefit of this change is better readability and maintainability
of TLS functions within MySQL.
There is a performance loss using TlsXXX functions compared to __declspec
but the difference is negligible in practice. In a sysbench-like benchmark
I ran with with TlsGetValue, pthread_[get|set]_specific was called 600000000
times and took 0.17sec of total 35min CPU time, or 0.008%.
* Finished Monty and Jani's merge
* Some InnoDB tests still fail (because it's old xtradb code run against
newer testsuite). They are expected to go after mergning with the latest
xtradb.
client/mysql.cc:

storage/myisam/mi_check.c:

casted in a similar way in another part of the code.
storage/ndb/include/mgmapi/ndb_logevent.h:
Apply fix from cluster team.
tests/mysql_client_test.c:
Remove extraneous slash.
The problem is that the lexer could inadvertently skip over the
end of a query being parsed if it encountered a malformed multibyte
character. A specially crated query string could cause the lexer
to jump up to six bytes past the end of the query buffer. Another
problem was that the laxer could use unfiltered user input as
a signed array index for the parser maps (having upper and lower
bounds 0 and 256 respectively).
The solution is to ensure that the lexer only skips over well-formed
multibyte characters and that the index value of the parser maps
is always a unsigned value.
mysql-test/r/ctype_recoding.result:
Update test case result: ending backtick is not skipped over anymore.
sql/sql_lex.cc:
Characters being analyzed must be unsigned as they can be
used as indexes for the parser maps. Only skip over if the
string is a valid multi-byte sequence.
tests/mysql_client_test.c:
Add test case for Bug#45010
Post-merge fix: test case could fail due to a conversion of the
max_join_size value to a integer. Fixed by preserving the value
as a string for comparison purposes.
tests/mysql_client_test.c:
Preserve max_join_size value as a string instead of converting
it to a integer -- value can be larger then the type used.
unnecessarily
The problem is that libmysqlclient.so is built with THREAD
undefined, while a client compiling against the same header
files will see THREAD as defined and definitions in
my_pthread.h will be included, possibly resulting in undefined
symbols that cannot be resolved with libmysqlclient.so.
The suggested solution is to require that clients wanting to
link with libmysqlclient.so should be built with
MYSQL_CLIENT_NO_THREADS defined. This requires a documentation
change, and more details for this will be supplied if this
patch is approved.
The MYSQL_CLIENT_NO_THREADS define was renamed from
UNDEF_THREADS_HACK, to get a more suitable (less suspicious)
name for the define. (The UNDEF_THREADS_HACK is retained for
backwards compatibility, though.)
This patch is also in anticipation of WL#4958, which will
remove this problem altogether by dropping the building of
libmysqlclient.

warnings to client as some functions may send its
own errors, so we should set no_warnings_for_error= 0
only in case of warning.
The fix is to enable message storing into error message
list for 'drop table' command(only for error case).
tests/mysql_client_test.c:
test fix
without proper formatting
The problem is that a suitably crafted database identifier
supplied to COM_CREATE_DB or COM_DROP_DB can cause a SIGSEGV,
and thereby a denial of service. The database name is printed
to the log without using a format string, so potential
attackers can control the behavior of my_b_vprintf() by
supplying their own format string. A CREATE or DROP privilege
would be required.
This patch supplies a format string to the printing of the
database name. A test case is added to mysql_client_test.
sql/sql_parse.cc:
Added format strings.
tests/mysql_client_test.c:
Added new test case.

returns short string value.
Multibyte character sets were not taken into account when
calculating max_length in Item_param::convert_str_value(). As a
result, string parameters of a prepared statement could be
truncated later when calculating string length in characters by
dividing length in bytes by the charset's mbmaxlen value (e.g. in
Field_varstring::store()).
Fixed by taking charset's mbmaxlen into account when calculating
max_length in Item_param::convert_str_value().

The problem is that the query cache stores packets containing
the server status of the time when the cached statement was run.
This might lead to a wrong transaction status in the client side
if a statement is cached during a transaction and is later served
outside a transaction context (and vice-versa).
The solution is to take into account the transaction status when

The code to get read the value of a system variable was extracting its value
on PREPARE stage and was substituting the value (as a constant) into the parse tree.
Note that this must be a reversible transformation, i.e. it must be reversed before
each re-execution.
Unfortunately this cannot be reliably done using the current code, because there are
other non-reversible source tree transformations that can interfere with this
reversible transformation.
Fixed by not resolving the value at PREPARE, but at EXECUTE (as the rest of the
functions operate). Added a cache of the value (so that it's constant throughout
the execution of the query). Note that the cache also caches NULL values.
Updated an obsolete related test suite (variables-big) and the code to test the
result type of system variables (as per bug 74).

PREPARE", review fixes:
- make the patch follow the specification of WL#4166 and remove
the new error that was originally introduced.
Now the client never gets an error from reprepare, unless it failed.
I.e. even if the statement at hand returns a completely different
result set, this is not considered a server error.
The C API library, that can not handle this situation, was modified to
return a client error.
Added additional test coverage.
include/errmsg.h:
Add a new client side error: now when we automatically
reprepare a statement, the new result set may contain a different
number of columns.
include/mysql_com.h:
Add a new server status to be sent to the client if the
number of columns in the result set is different.
libmysql/errmsg.c:
Add a new error message.
libmysql/libmysql.c:
Make the client library robust against a result set that
contains a different number of columns from prepare time.
Previously that could never happen, and we simply had an assert.
That means in particular that all clients are advised to upgrade
with transition to 5.1, if they are using prepared statements C API.
Make mysql_stmt_store_result() and mysql_stmt_execute() robust against
"broken" statement handles (those that have an error).
sql/sql_parse.cc:
Clear transient server status flags at start of statement more
systematically.
sql/share/errmsg.txt:
Remove an error that is unused and is not part of any public release.
sql/sql_prepare.cc:
Instead of returning an error in case the number of result set columns
has changed, simply update the client in server status.
That will allow modern clients automatically recover from an error.
tests/mysql_client_test.c:
Add additional coverage to the cases when the number of result
set columns changed as a result of reprepare.
Cover conversion and truncation of result set columns.

WL#4165 Prepared statements: validation
WL#4166 Prepared statements: automatic re-prepare
Fixes
Bug#27430 Crash in subquery code when in PS and table DDL changed after PREPARE
Bug#27690 Re-execution of prepared statement after table was replaced with a view crashes
Bug#27420 A combination of PS and view operations cause error + assertion on shutdown
The basic idea of the patch is to keep track of table metadata between
prepared statement prepare and execute. If some table used in the statement
has changed, the prepared statement is re-prepared before execution.
See WL#4165 and WL#4166 contents and comments in the code for details
of the implementation.

sql/item.cc:
Implement Item_param "copy" functionality, used at re-prepare of
a prepared statement.
We copy the type of the original parameter, and move the assigned value,
if any. Sic, the value is "moved", since it can be quite big --
e.g. in case we deal with a LONG DATA parameter.
It's essential to move the value from the old parameter since
at the time of re-prepare the client packet with the necessary information
may be not available.

sql/sql_base.cc:

sql/share/errmsg.txt:
Add two new error messages: ER_NEED_REPREPARE and ER_PS_REBIND.
The first error (theoretically) never reaches the user.
It is issued by the metadata validation framework when a metadata version
has changed between prepare and execute. Later on it's intercepted
and the statement is automatically re-prepared. Only if the error
has occurred repeatedly MAX_REPREPARE_ATTEMTS (3) times do we
return it to the user.
The second error is issued when after re-prepare we discover
that the metadata we sent over to the client using the binary
protocol differs drammatically from the new result set metadata
that the reprepared statement produces (e.g. number of result
set columns is different).

The problem was that the COM_STMT_SEND_LONG_DATA was sending a response
packet if the prepared statement wasn't found in the server (due to
reconnection). The commands COM_STMT_SEND_LONG_DATA and COM_STMT_CLOSE
should not send any packets, even error packets should not be sent since
they are not expected by the client API.
The solution is to clear generated during the execution of the aforementioned
commands and to skip resend of prepared statement commands. Another fix is
that if the connection breaks during the send of prepared statement command,
the command is not sent again since the prepared statement is no longer in the
server.

Under some circumstances, the mysql_insert_id() value after SELECT ...
INSERT could return a wrong value. This could happen when the last
SELECT ... INSERT did not involve an AUTO_INCREMENT column, but the
value of mysql_insert_id() was changed by some previous statements.
Fixed by checking the value of thd->insert_id_used in
select_insert::send_eof() and returning 0 for mysql_insert_id() if it
is not set.
sql/sql_insert.cc:
Do not return thd->last_insert_id unconditionally in

non-zero, and return 0 otherwise.

--local-infile=0 checks can be bypassed by sending a FETCH LOCAL FILE response
Add a check for CLIENT_LOCAL_FILES before sending a local file.
Beware, that all binary distributions enable sending of local files and it's up
to the programs which use libmysql to disable it, if they don't use this functionality.
Otherwise they are not safe.
client/mysqltest.c:
Enable LOAD DATA LOCAL INFILE for the test suite, like some rpl and ndb test.
sql-common/client.c:
Check if the client has LOAD DATA LOCAL INFILE disabled and
don't serve such requests from the server. This is not 100% proof,
as if the client has this enabled, in all binary builds for BC,
the check won't work and the client can be tricked into sending a
local file.

Fix compilation failure.
tests/mysql_client_test.c:

Executing a prepared statement associated with a materialized
cursor yields to the client a metadata packet with wrong table
and database names. The problem was occurring because the server
was sending the the name of the temporary table used by the cursor
instead of the table name of the original table. The same problem
occurs when selecting from views, in which case the table name was
being sent and not the name of the view.
The solution is to fill the list item from the temporary table but
preserving the table and database names of the original fields. This
is achieved by tweaking the Select_materialize to accept a pointer to
the Materialized_cursor class which contains the item list to be filled.
sql/sql_cursor.cc:
Fill the item list in the send_fields method and preserve
the table and database name of the fields.

insert ... select.
The 5.0 manual page for mysql_insert_id() does not mention anything
about INSERT ... SELECT, though its current behavior is incosistent
with what the manual says about the plain INSERT.
Fixed by changing the AUTO_INCREMENT and mysql_insert_id() handling
logic in INSERT ... SELECT to be consistent with the INSERT behavior,
the manual, and the changes in 5.1 introduced by WL3146:
- mysql_insert_id() now returns the first automatically generated
AUTO_INCREMENT value that was successfully inserted by INSERT ... SELECT
- if an INSERT ... SELECT statement is executed, and no automatically
generated value is successfully inserted, mysql_insert_id() now returns
the ID of the last inserted row.
sql/sql_class.h:
Replaced last_insert_id with autoinc_value_of_last_inserted_row to be
consistent with 5.1 code.
sql/sql_insert.cc:

INSERT ... SELECT to be consistent with INSERT behavior, the manual, and
changes in 5.1 introduced by WL3146:
- mysql_insert_id() now returns the first automatically generated
AUTO_INCREMENT value that was successfully inserted;
- if an INSERT ... SELECT statement is executed, and no automatically
generated value is successfully inserted, mysql_insert_id() now returns
the ID of the last inserted row.

crashes.
MySQL distributions contain a number of programs that are used only by
the MySQL test suite internally, i.e. they are not indended to be
invoked directly by a user. As a result, such programs are not
documented, do not have any built-in help or proper error reporting,
which may confuse users.
This patch fixes the problem with the following changes:
- mytest, libmysqltest and all references to them were removed from the
distribution since they are not used anymore
- bug25714 now displays an error message when run with incorrect
arguments or with the --help option
- mysql_client_test now does not call abort() in case of errors,
instead it does a clean exit() with a proper error status.

command and reported to a client.
The fact that a timestamp field will be set to NO on UPDATE wasn't shown
by the SHOW COMMAND and reported to a client through connectors. This led to
problems in the ODBC connector and might lead to a user confusion.
A new filed flag called ON_UPDATE_NOW_FLAG is added.
Constructors of the Field_timestamp set it when a field should be set to NOW
on UPDATE.
The get_schema_column_record function now reports whether a timestamp field

The problem is that when copying the supplied username and
database, no bounds checking is performed on the fixed-length
buffer. A sufficiently large (> 512) user string can easily
cause stack corruption. Since this API can be used from PHP
and other programs, this is a serious problem.
The solution is to increase the buffer size to the accepted
size in similar functions and perform bounds checking when
copying the username and database.

The change_to_use_tmp_fields function leaves the orig_table member of an
expression's tmp table field filled for the new Item_field being created.
Later orig_table is used by the Field::make_field function to provide some
info about original table and field name to a user. This is ok for a field
but for an expression it should be empty.
The change_to_use_tmp_fields function now resets orig_table member of
an expression's tmp table field to prevent providing a wrong info to a user.
The Field::make_field function now resets the table_name and the org_col_name
variables when the orig_table is set to 0.

insert_id after succ. mysql_change_user() call.
See also WL 4066.
This bug reveals two problems:
- the problem on the client side which was described originally;
- the problem in protocol / the server side: connection context
on client and server should be like after mysql_real_connect()
and be consistent. The server however just resets character
set variables to the global defaults.
The fix seems to be as follows:
- extend the protocol so that the client be able to send
character set information in COM_CHANGE_USER command;
- change the server so that it understands client character set
in the command;
- change the client:
- reset character set to the default value (which has been
read from the configuration);
- send character set in COM_CHANGE_USER command.

If MYSQL_TCP_PORT defaulted in configure (factory default 3306
at the time of this writing), set MYSQL_TCP_PORT to factory
default, then clear factory default after. That way, we lose no
information, and we can distinguish between "defaulted" and the
pathological case "builder specifically configured a port that
coincides with factory default." This can in theory happen if
builder configures and builds several servers from a script
(--with-tcp-port=3306, --with-tcp-port=3316, --with-tcp-port=3326).
Not all that probable, but much preferable to having more "magic"
happen in the server when we can solve this without any guesswork.

The cli_read_binary_rows function is used to fetch data from the server
after a prepared statement execution. It accepts a statement handler and gets
the connection handler from it. But when the auto-reconnect option is set
the connection handler is reset to NULL after reconnection because the
prepared statement is lost and the handler became useless. This case
wasn't checked in the cli_read_binary_rows function and caused server crash.
Now the cli_read_binary_rows function checks the connection handler to be
not NULL and returns an error if it is.

Optimization to do less alarm() and pthread_sigmask() calls.
Idea is to remember time for next pending alarm and not reschedule a new alarm if it's after the current one.
Before we only did this if there was other pending alarms.
We don't have to use pthread_sigmask() in case of 'USE_ONE_SIGNAL_HAND' as the alarm()
signal will be blocked for the calling thread anyway and no other thread will have the alarm() signal enabled to call process_alarm()

VIEW".
mysql_list_fields() C API function would incorrectly set MYSQL_FIELD::decimals
member for some view columns.
The problem was in an incomplete implementation of
Item_ident_for_show::make_field(), which is responsible for view
columns metadata.
sql/item.cc:

Item_ident_for_show::make_field
