It may be the case that for some reason, -Werror deprecated
for instance, that mallinfo isn't detected. In this case the
malloc.h headers won't be included which defined the mallinfo2
function and its structure.
Re-organise so that either function pulls in the header.
handle_slave_io(), handle_slave_sql(), os_thread_exit():
Remove a redundant pthread_exit(nullptr) call, because it
would cause SIGSEGV.
mysql_print_status(): Add MEM_MAKE_DEFINED() to work around
some missing instrumentation around mallinfo2().
que_graph_free_stat_list(): Invoke que_node_get_next(node) before
que_graph_free_recursive(node). That is the logical and
MSAN_OPTIONS=poison_in_dtor=1 compatible way of freeing memory.
ins_node_t::~ins_node_t(): Invoke mem_heap_free(entry_sys_heap).
que_graph_free_recursive(): Rely on ins_node_t::~ins_node_t().
fts_t::~fts_t(): Invoke mem_heap_free(fts_heap).
fts_free(): Replace with direct calls to fts_t::~fts_t().
The failures in free_root() due to MSAN_OPTIONS=poison_in_dtor=1
will be covered in MDEV-30942.
The easiest way to compile and test the server with UBSAN is to run:
./BUILD/compile-pentium64-ubsan
and then run mysql-test-run.
After this commit, one should be able to run this without any UBSAN
warnings. There is still a few compiler warnings that should be fixed
at some point, but these do not expose any real bugs.
The 'special' cases where we disable, suppress or circumvent UBSAN are:
- ref10 source (as here we intentionally do some shifts that UBSAN
complains about.
- x86 version of optimized int#korr() methods. UBSAN do not like unaligned
memory access of integers. Fixed by using byte_order_generic.h when
compiling with UBSAN
- We use smaller thread stack with ASAN and UBSAN, which forced me to
disable a few tests that prints the thread stack size.
- Verifying class types does not work for shared libraries. I added
suppression in mysql-test-run.pl for this case.
- Added '#ifdef WITH_UBSAN' when using integer arithmetic where it is
safe to have overflows (two cases, in item_func.cc).
Things fixed:
- Don't left shift signed values
(byte_order_generic.h, mysqltest.c, item_sum.cc and many more)
- Don't assign not non existing values to enum variables.
- Ensure that bool and enum values are properly initialized in
constructors. This was needed as UBSAN checks that these types has
correct values when one copies an object.
(gcalc_tools.h, ha_partition.cc, item_sum.cc, partition_element.h ...)
- Ensure we do not called handler functions on unallocated objects or
deleted objects.
(events.cc, sql_acl.cc).
- Fixed bugs in Item_sp::Item_sp() where we did not call constructor
on Query_arena object.
- Fixed several cast of objects to an incompatible class!
(Item.cc, Item_buff.cc, item_timefunc.cc, opt_subselect.cc, sql_acl.cc,
sql_select.cc ...)
- Ensure we do not do integer arithmetic that causes over or underflows.
This includes also ++ and -- of integers.
(Item_func.cc, Item_strfunc.cc, item_timefunc.cc, sql_base.cc ...)
- Added JSON_VALUE_UNITIALIZED to json_value_types and ensure that
value_type is initialized to this instead of to -1, which is not a valid
enum value for json_value_types.
- Ensure we do not call memcpy() when second argument could be null.
- Fixed that Item_func_str::make_empty_result() creates an empty string
instead of a null string (safer as it ensures we do not do arithmetic
on null strings).
Other things:
- Changed struct st_position to an OBJECT and added an initialization
function to it to ensure that we do not copy or use uninitialized
members. The change to a class was also motived that we used "struct
st_position" and POSITION randomly trough the code which was
confusing.
- Notably big rewrite in sql_acl.cc to avoid using deleted objects.
- Changed in sql_partition to use '^' instead of '-'. This is safe as
the operator is either 0 or 0x8000000000000000ULL.
- Added check for select_nr < INT_MAX in JOIN::build_explain() to
avoid bug when get_select() could return NULL.
- Reordered elements in POSITION for better alignment.
- Changed sql_test.cc::print_plan() to use pointers instead of objects.
- Fixed bug in find_set() where could could execute '1 << -1'.
- Added variable have_sanitizer, used by mtr. (This variable was before
only in 10.5 and up). It can now have one of two values:
ASAN or UBSAN.
- Moved ~Archive_share() from ha_archive.cc to ha_archive.h and marked
it virtual. This was an effort to get UBSAN to work with loaded storage
engines. I kept the change as the new place is better.
- Added in CONNECT engine COLBLK::SetName(), to get around a wrong cast
in tabutil.cpp.
- Added HAVE_REPLICATION around usage of rgi_slave, to get embedded
server to compile with UBSAN. (Patch from Marko).
- Added #ifdef for powerpc64 to avoid a bug in old gcc versions related
to integer arithmetic.
Changes that should not be needed but had to be done to suppress warnings
from UBSAN:
- Added static_cast<<uint16_t>> around shift to get rid of a LOT of
compiler warnings when using UBSAN.
- Had to change some '/' of 2 base integers to shift to get rid of
some compile time warnings.

`mallinfo` is deprecated since glibc 2.33 and has been replaced by mallinfo2.
The deprecation causes building the server to fail if glibc version is > 2.33.
Check if mallinfo2 exist on the system and use it instead.
1. only call calc_sum_of_all_status() if a global
SHOW_xxx_STATUS variable is to be returned
2. only lock LOCK_status when copying global_status_var,
but not when iterating all threads
- Added unlikely() to optimize for not having optimizer trace enabled
- Made THD::trace_started() inline
- Added 'if (trace_enabled())' around some potentially expensive code
(not many found)
- Added ASSERT's to ensure we don't call expensive optimizer trace calls
if optimizer trace is not enabled
- Added length to Json_writer functions to speed up buffer writes
when optimizer trace is enabled.
- Changed LEX_CSTRING argument handling to not send full struct to writer
function on_add_str() functions now trusts length arguments
- Replace "class Repeat_count" with function call.
There is no reason for this class to exists. More complex and more
code than doing a function! In addition the code didn't match what
the val() function was doing.
Other things:
- Fixed compiler failure in print_cached_tables_callback()
It is never called after 7fb9d64, which makes the whole refresh version
infrastructure useless.
Removed:
- tdc_version_t
- TDC_VERSION_MAX
- tdc_version
- TDC_element::version
- tdc_increment_refresh_version()
- tdc_refresh_version()
- refresh_version argument of tdc_wait_for_old_version()
- Flush_commands status variable
- refresh version from COM_STATISTICS

SHOW STATUS LIKE 'Open_files' was showing 18446744073709551615
my_file_opened used statistic_increment/statistic_decrement,
so one-off errors were normal and expected. But they confused
monitoring tools, so let's move my_file_opened to use atomics.
This task involves the implementation for the optimizer trace.
This feature produces a trace for any SELECT/UPDATE/DELETE/,
which contains information about decisions taken by the optimizer during
the optimization phase (choice of table access method, various costs,
transformations, etc). This feature would help to tell why some decisions were
taken by the optimizer and why some were rejected.
Trace is session-local, controlled by the @@optimizer_trace variable.
To enable optimizer trace we need to write:
set @@optimizer_trace variable= 'enabled=on';
To display the trace one can run:
SELECT trace FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.OPTIMIZER_TRACE;
This task also involves:
MDEV-18489: Limit the memory used by the optimizer trace
introduces a switch optimizer_trace_max_mem_size which limits
the memory used by the optimizer trace. This was implemented by
Sergei Petrunia.
- Added sql/mariadb.h file that should be included first by files in sql
directory, if sql_plugin.h is not used (sql_plugin.h adds SHOW variables
that must be done before my_global.h is included)
- Removed a lot of include my_global.h from include files
- Removed include's of some files that my_global.h automatically includes
- Removed duplicated include's of my_sys.h
- Replaced include my_config.h with my_global.h
Benefits of this patch:
- Removed a lot of calls to strlen(), especially for field_string
- Strings generated by parser are now const strings, less chance of
accidently changing a string
- Removed a lot of calls with LEX_STRING as parameter (changed to pointer)
- More uniform code
- Item::name_length was not kept up to date. Now fixed
- Several bugs found and fixed (Access to null pointers,
access of freed memory, wrong arguments to printf like functions)
- Removed a lot of casts from (const char*) to (char*)
Changes:
- This caused some ABI changes
- lex_string_set now uses LEX_CSTRING
- Some fucntions are now taking const char* instead of char*
- Create_field::change and after changed to LEX_CSTRING
- handler::connect_string, comment and engine_name() changed to LEX_CSTRING
- Checked printf() related calls to find bugs. Found and fixed several
errors in old code.
- A lot of changes from LEX_STRING to LEX_CSTRING, especially related to
parsing and events.
- Some changes from LEX_STRING and LEX_STRING & to LEX_CSTRING*
- Some changes for char* to const char*
- Added printf argument checking for my_snprintf()
- Introduced null_clex_str, star_clex_string, temp_lex_str to simplify
code
- Added item_empty_name and item_used_name to be able to distingush between
items that was given an empty name and items that was not given a name
This is used in sql_yacc.yy to know when to give an item a name.
- select table_name."*' is not anymore same as table_name.*
- removed not used function Item::rename()
- Added comparision of item->name_length before some calls to
my_strcasecmp() to speed up comparison
- Moved Item_sp_variable::make_field() from item.h to item.cc
- Some minimal code changes to avoid copying to const char *
- Fixed wrong error message in wsrep_mysql_parse()
- Fixed wrong code in find_field_in_natural_join() where real_item() was
set when it shouldn't
- ER_ERROR_ON_RENAME was used with extra arguments.
- Removed some (wrong) ER_OUTOFMEMORY, as alloc_root will already
give the error.
