There was a bug in the page cache that didn't take into account that
another thread could be waiting for a page to be read by read_big_block().
Fixed by releasing all waiters in read_big_block()
There was two separate problems:
- Aria pagecache didn't properly handle re-reading of blocks
that have given errors before (this triggered an assert)
- temporary tables that where opened several times where
not properly closed in ALTER, REPAIR or OPTIMIZE table
Other things
- Added a couple of asserts that will make it easier to
find problems like this in the future.
A read-only storage engine that stores it's data in (aws) S3
To store data in S3 one could use ALTER TABLE:
ALTER TABLE table_name ENGINE=S3

This commit is based on the work of Michal Schorm, rebased on the
earliest MariaDB version.

- Removed test if HA_FT_WTYPE == HA_KEYTYPE_FLOAT as this never worked
(HA_KEYTYPE_FLOAT is an enum)
- Define HA_FT_MAXLEN to 126 (was tested before but never defined)
Handle string length as size_t, consistently (almost always:))
Change function prototypes to accept size_t, where in the past
ulong or uint were used. change local/member variables to size_t
when appropriate.
This fix excludes rocksdb, spider, spider, sphinx and connect for now.
- Fix win64 pointer truncation warnings
(usually coming from misusing 0x%lx and long cast in DBUG)
- Also fix printf-format warnings
Make the above mentioned warnings fatal.
- fix pthread_join on Windows to set return value.
If compiling a non DBUG binary with
-DDBUG_ASSERT_AS_PRINTF asserts will be
changed to printf + stack trace (of stack
trace are enabled).
- Changed #ifndef DBUG_OFF to
#ifdef DBUG_ASSERT_EXISTS
for those DBUG_OFF that was just used to enable
assert
- Assert checking that could greatly impact
performance where changed to DBUG_ASSERT_SLOW which
is not affected by DBUG_ASSERT_AS_PRINTF
- Added one extra option to my_print_stacktrace() to
get more silent in case of stack trace printing as
part of assert.
Problem was two race condtion in Aria page cache:
- find_block() didn't inform free_block() that it had released requests
- free_block() didn't handle pinned blocks, which could happen if
free_block() was called as part of flush. This is fixed by not freeing
blocks that are pinned. This is safe as when maria_close() is called
when last thread is using a table, there can be no pinned blocks. For
other flush calls it's safe to ignore pinned blocks.
Fixed wrong calculation of buffer sizes. ulong datatype was used wrongly,
as were the casts to ulong. Buffer sizes should be of type size_t,
not ulong, or bad things happen on 64 bit Windows.
This patch changes pagecache struct to use size_t/ssize_t
where long/ulong were previously used. Also, removed several casts.
Creating a CONNECT object on client connect and pass this to the working thread which creates the THD.
Split LOCK_thread_count to different mutexes
Added LOCK_thread_start to syncronize threads
Moved most usage of LOCK_thread_count to dedicated functions
Use next_thread_id() instead of thread_id++
Other things:
- Thread id now starts from 1 instead of 2
- Added cast for thread_id as thread id is now of type my_thread_id
- Made THD->host const (To ensure it's not changed)
- Removed some DBUG_PRINT() about entering/exiting mutex as these was already logged by mutex code
- Fixed that aborted_connects and connection_errors_internal are counted in all cases
- Don't take locks for current_linfo when we set it (not needed as it was 0 before)
of more than 45G with a key_cache_block_size of 1024 or less.
The problem was that some of the arguments to my_multi_malloc() got to be
more than 4G.
Fix:
- Inntroduced my_multi_malloc_large() that can handle big regions.
- Changed MyISAM and Aria key caches to use my_multi_malloc_large().
I didn't change the default my_multi_malloc() as this would be a too big
patch and we don't allocate 4G blocks anywhere else.
Reason for the problem was that the hash of changed files in the key cache was too small (was 128). Fixed by making the hash size larger and changeable.
- Introduced key-cache-file-hash-size (default 512) for MyISAM and aria_pagecache_file_hash_size (default 512) for Aria.
- Added new status variable "Feature_delay_key_write" which counts number of tables opened that are using delay_key_write

- Replaced old DBUG_ASSERT with a new correct one + a comment.
storage/maria/ma_pagecache.c:
Replaced old DBUG_ASSERT with a new correct one + a comment.
- Fixed multi-user problem with one thread doing inserts and another doing scans that gave error 175
- Fixed bug that caused assert in move_to_next_bitmap() & _ma_read_bitmap_page()
- Much more DBUG_ASSERT(!maria_assert_if_crashed_table) to detect errors early
- EXTERNAL_LOCKING -> MARIA_EXTERNAL_LOCKING (to use same define everywhere
storage/maria/ma_bitmap.c:
More secure handling of first_bitmap_with_space (now we also take care of wrong values)
Don't set page to -1; This fixed unlikely bug that caused assert in move_to_next_bitmap() & _ma_read_bitmap_page()
storage/maria/ma_blockrec.c:
More DBUG_ASSERT()'s
Fixed multi-user problem with one thread doing inserts and another doing scans that gave error 175
(We should use data_file_length from start of scan, not new value as new bitmap page may not yet be in page cache)
storage/maria/ma_check.c:
EXTERNAL_LOCKING -> MARIA_EXTERNAL_LOCKING (to use same define everywhere)
storage/maria/ma_checkpoint.c:
Made maria_checkpoint_min_activity static so that one can change it in debugger while testing.
Fixed long standing performance problem that caused write of state info at checkpoint for any file that was ever changed since open.
storage/maria/ma_create.c:
EXTERNAL_LOCKING -> MARIA_EXTERNAL_LOCKING (to use same define everywhere
storage/maria/ma_dynrec.c:
Added missing MARIA_EXTERNAL_LOCKING (minor performance improvement)
storage/maria/ma_locking.c:
EXTERNAL_LOCKING -> MARIA_EXTERNAL_LOCKING (to use same define everywhere
storage/maria/ma_open.c:
EXTERNAL_LOCKING -> MARIA_EXTERNAL_LOCKING (to use same define everywhere
storage/maria/ma_pagecache.c:
Added assert to detect reads outside of data file
storage/maria/maria_def.h:
Added checkpoint_state to cache state writes in checkpoint
- Fixed performance bug in alter table with Aria; Aria didn't use disable keys + enable keys
- Fixed wrong warning about 'Wrong CRC on datapage' from REPAIR TABLE with aria block tables.

- Added --translog_buffer_size to maria_read_log.
storage/maria/ha_maria.cc:
Fixed performance bug in alter table with Aria; Aria didn't use disable keys + enable keys
storage/maria/ma_bitmap.c:

storage/maria/ma_pagecache.c:
Copy read pages to buffer even if there was an error (to be able to detect zero filled pages)
storage/maria/maria_chk.c:
Fixed bug in aria_chk that disabled performance counters.
storage/maria/maria_read_log.c:
Added option to set translog_buffer_size
