rpl_semi_sync_slave_enabled_consistent.test and the first part of
the commit message comes from Brandon Nesterenko.
A test to show how to induce the "Read semi-sync reply magic number
error" message on a primary. In short, if semi-sync is turned on
during the hand-shake process between a primary and replica, but
later a user negates the rpl_semi_sync_slave_enabled variable while
the replica's IO thread is running; if the io thread exits, the
replica can skip a necessary call to kill_connection() in
repl_semisync_slave.slave_stop() due to its reliance on a global
variable. Then, the replica will send a COM_QUIT packet to the
primary on an active semi-sync connection, causing the magic number
error.
The test in this patch exits the IO thread by forcing an error;
though note a call to STOP SLAVE could also do this, but it ends up
needing more synchronization. That is, the STOP SLAVE command also
tries to kill the VIO of the replica, which makes a race with the IO
thread to try and send the COM_QUIT before this happens (which would
need more debug_sync to get around). See THD::awake_no_mutex for
details as to the killing of the replica’s vio.
Notes:
- The MariaDB documentation does not make it clear that when one
enables semi-sync replication it does not matter if one enables
it first in the master or slave. Any order works.
Changes done:
- The rpl_semi_sync_slave_enabled variable is now a default value for
when semisync is started. The variable does not anymore affect
semisync if it is already running. This fixes the original reported
bug. Internally we now use repl_semisync_slave.get_slave_enabled()
instead of rpl_semi_sync_slave_enabled. To check if semisync is
active on should check the @@rpl_semi_sync_slave_status variable (as
before).
- The semisync protocol conflicts in the way that the original
MySQL/MariaDB client-server protocol was designed (client-server
send and reply packets are strictly ordered and includes a packet
number to allow one to check if a packet is lost). When using
semi-sync the master and slave can send packets at 'any time', so
packet numbering does not work. The 'solution' has been that each
communication starts with packet number 1, but in some cases there
is still a chance that the packet number check can fail. Fixed by
adding a flag (pkt_nr_can_be_reset) in the NET struct that one can
use to signal that packet number checking should not be done. This
is flag is set when semi-sync is used.
- Added Master_info::semi_sync_reply_enabled to allow one to configure
some slaves with semisync and other other slaves without semisync.
Removed global variable semi_sync_need_reply that would not work
with multi-master.
- Repl_semi_sync_master::report_reply_packet() can now recognize
the COM_QUIT packet from semisync slave and not give a
"Read semi-sync reply magic number error" error for this case.
The slave will be removed from the Ack listener.
- On Windows, don't stop semisync Ack listener just because one
slave connection is using socket_id > FD_SETSIZE.
- Removed busy loop in Ack_receiver::run() by using
"Self-pipe trick" to signal new slave and stop Ack_receiver.
- Changed some Repl_semi_sync_slave functions that always returns 0
from int to void.
- Added Repl_semi_sync_slave::slave_reconnect().
- Removed dummy_function Repl_semi_sync_slave::reset_slave().
- Removed some duplicate semisync notes from the error log.
- Add test of "if (get_slave_enabled() && semi_sync_need_reply)"
before calling Repl_semi_sync_slave::slave_reply().
(Speeds up the code as we can skip all initializations).
- If epl_semisync_slave.slave_reply() fails, we disable semisync
for that connection.
- We do not call semisync.switch_off() if there are no active slaves.
Instead we check in Repl_semi_sync_master::commit_trx() if there are
no active threads. This simplices the code.
- Changed assert() to DBUG_ASSERT() to ensure that the DBUG log is
flushed in case of asserts.
- Removed the internal rpl_semi_sync_slave_status as it is not needed
anymore. The @@rpl_semi_sync_slave_status status variable is now
mapped to rpl_semi_sync_enabled.
- Removed rpl_semi_sync_slave_enabled as it is not needed anymore.
Repl_semi_sync_slave::get_slave_enabled() contains the active status.
- Added checking that we do not add a slave twice with
Ack_receiver::add_slave(). This could happen with old code.
- Removed Repl_semi_sync_master::check_and_switch() as it is not
needed anymore.
- Ensure that when we call Ack_receiver::remove_slave() that the slave
is removed from the listener before function returns.
- Call listener.listen_on_sockets() outside of mutex for better
performance and less contested mutex.
- Ensure that listening is ignoring newly added slaves when checking for
responses.
- Fixed the master ack_receiver listener is not killed if there are no
connected slaves (and thus stop semisync handling of future
connections). This could happen if all slaves sockets where would be
marked as unreliable.
- Added unlink() to base_ilist_iterator and remove() to
I_List_iterator. This enables us to remove 'dead' slaves in
Ack_recever::run().
- kill_zombie_dump_threads() now does killing of dump threads properly.
- It can now kill several threads (should be impossible but could
happen if IO slaves reconnects very fast).
- We now wait until the dump thread is done before starting the
dump.
- Added an error if kill_zombie_dump_threads() fails.
- Set thd->variables.server_id before calling
kill_zombie_dump_threads(). This simplies the code.
- Added a lot of comments both in code and tests.
- Removed DBUG_EVALUATE_IF "failed_slave_start" as it is not used.
Test changes:
- rpl.rpl_session_var2 added which runs rpl.rpl_session_var test with
semisync enabled.
- Some timings changed slight with startup of slave which caused
rpl_binlog_dump_slave_gtid_state_info.text to fail as it checked the
error log file before the slave had started properly. Fixed by
adding wait_for_pattern_in_file.inc that allows waiting for the
pattern to appear in the log file.
- Tests have been updated so that we first set
rpl_semi_sync_master_enabled on the master and then set
rpl_semi_sync_slave_enabled on the slaves (this is according to how
the MariaDB documentation document how to setup semi-sync).
- Error text "Master server does not have semi-sync enabled" has been
replaced with "Master server does not support semi-sync" for the
case when the master supports semi-sync but semi-sync is not
enabled.
Other things:
- Some trivial cleanups in Repl_semi_sync_master::update_sync_header().
- We should in 11.3 changed the default value for
rpl-semi-sync-master-wait-no-slave from TRUE to FALSE as the TRUE
does not make much sense as default. The main difference with using
FALSE is that we do not wait for semisync Ack if there are no slave
threads. In the case of TRUE we wait once, which did not bring any
notable benefits except slower startup of master configured for
using semisync.
Co-author: Brandon Nesterenko <brandon.nesterenko@mariadb.com>
This solves the problem reported in MDEV-32960 where a new
slave may not be registered in time and the master disables
semi sync because of that.
Updates to specific replication system variables need to target the
active primary connection to support multi-source replication. These
variables use the Sys_var_multi_source_ulonglong type. This class
uses offsets of the Master_info C++ class to generalize access to
its member variables.
The problem is that the Master_info class is not of standard layout,
and neither are many of its member variables, e.g. rli and
rli->relay_log. Because the class is not of standard layout, using
offsets to access member variables invokes undefined behavior.
This patch changes how Sys_var_multi_source_ulonglong accesses the
member variables of Master_info from using parameterized memory
offsets to “getter” function pointers.
Note that the size parameter and assertion are removed, as they are
no longer needed because the condition is guaranteed by compiler
type-safety checks.

New Feature:
========
This feature adds a safe replacement to the
MASTER_USE_GTID=Current_Pos option for CHANGE MASTER TO as
MASTER_DEMOTE_TO_SLAVE=<bool>. The use case of Current_Pos is to
transition a master to become a slave; however, can break
replication state if the slave executes local transactions due to
actively updating gtid_current_pos with gtid_binlog_pos and
gtid_slave_pos.
MASTER_DEMOTE_TO_SLAVE changes this use case by forcing users to set
Using_Gtid=Slave_Pos and merging gtid_binlog_pos into gtid_slave_pos
once at CHANGE MASTER TO time. Note that if gtid_slave_pos is more
recent than gtid_binlog_pos (as in the case of chain replication),
the replication state should be preserved.
Additionally, deprecate the `Current_Pos` option of MASTER_USE_GTID
to suggest the safe alternative option MASTER_DEMOTE_TO_SLAVE=TRUE.

This commit makes replicas crash-safe by default by changing the
Using_Gtid value to be Slave_Pos on a fresh slave start and after
RESET SLAVE is issued. If the primary server does not support GTIDs
(i.e., version < 10), the replica will fall back to Using_Gtid=No on
slave start and after RESET SLAVE.
The following additional informational messages/warnings are added:
1. When Using_Gtid is automatically changed. That is, if RESET
SLAVE reverts Using_Gtid back to Slave_Pos, or Using_Gtid is
inferred to No from a CHANGE MASTER TO given with log coordinates
without MASTER_USE_GTID.
2. If options are ignored in CHANGE MASTER TO. If CHANGE MASTER TO
is given with log coordinates, yet also specifies
MASTER_USE_GTID=Slave_Pos, a warning message is given that the log
coordinate options are ignored.
Additionally, an MTR macro has been added for RESET SLAVE,
reset_slave.inc, which provides modes/options for resetting a slave
in log coordinate or gtid modes. When in log coordinates mode, the
macro will execute CHANGE MASTER TO MASTER_USE_GTID=No after the
RESET SLAVE command. When in GTID mode, an extra parameter,
reset_slave_keep_gtid_state, can be set to reset or preserve the
value of gtid_slave_pos.

... on semisync slave
To provide semisync master crash-recovery the same server-id transactions
were made to accept for execution on the semisync slave when the strict gtid
mode (see MDEV-27760).
That however caused out-of-order error on a master's transaction
server of the circular setup.
The error was fair in the sense of the gtid strict mode rule as indeed
under the condition of the circular setup the replicated transaction
already exists in the local binlog.
This is fixed by the commit to ignore on the gtid strict mode semisync
slave those gtids that exist in the slave's binlog that effectively restores
the default same-server-id ignore policy.
At the same time the fixes complies with MDEV-21117 semisync slave recovery
to accept the same server-id transactions that do not exist in local binlog.
This commit implements two phase binloggable ALTER.
When a new
@@session.binlog_alter_two_phase = YES
ALTER query gets logged in two parts, the START ALTER and the COMMIT
or ROLLBACK ALTER. START Alter is written in binlog as soon as
necessary locks have been acquired for the table. The timing is
such that any concurrent DML:s that update the same table are either
committed, thus logged into binary log having done work on the old
version of the table, or will be queued for execution on its new
version.
The "COMPLETE" COMMIT or ROLLBACK ALTER are written at the very point
of a normal "single-piece" ALTER that is after the most of
the query work is done. When its result is positive COMMIT ALTER is
written, otherwise ROLLBACK ALTER is written with specific error
happened after START ALTER phase.
Replication of two-phase binloggable ALTER is
cross-version safe. Specifically the OLD slave merely does not
recognized the start alter part, still being able to process and
memorize its gtid.
Two phase logged ALTER is read from binlog by mysqlbinlog to produce
BINLOG 'string', where 'string' contains base64 encoded
Query_log_event containing either the start part of ALTER, or a
completion part. The Query details can be displayed with `-v` flag,
similarly to ROW format events. Notice, mysqlbinlog output containing
parts of two-phase binloggable ALTER is processable correctly only by
binlog_alter_two_phase server.
@@log_warnings > 2 can reveal details of binlogging and slave side
processing of the ALTER parts.
The current commit also carries fixes to the following list of
reported bugs:
MDEV-27511, MDEV-27471, MDEV-27349, MDEV-27628, MDEV-27528.

implemenation completion, Sujatha Sivakumar, Brandon
Nesterenko, Alice Sherepa, Ramesh Sivaraman, Jan Lindstrom.
Problem:
========
This patch addresses two issues.
First, if a CHANGE MASTER command is issued and an error happens
while locating the replica’s relay logs, the logs can be put into an
invalid state where future updates fail and future CHANGE MASTER
calls crash the server. More specifically, right before a replica
purges the relay logs (part of the `CHANGE MASTER TO` logic), the
relay log is temporarily closed with state LOG_TO_BE_OPENED. If the
server errors in-between the temporary log closure and purge, i.e.
during the function find_log_pos, the log should be closed.
MDEV-25284 reveals the log is not properly closed.
Second, upon issuing a RESET SLAVE ALL command, a slave’s GTID
filters are not cleared (DO_DOMAIN_IDS, IGNORE_DOMIAN_IDS,
IGNORE_SERVER_IDS). MySQL had a similar bug report, Bug #18816897,
which fixed this issue to clear IGNORE_SERVER_IDS after issuing
RESET SLAVE ALL in version 5.7.
Solution:
=========
To fix the first problem, the CHANGE MASTER error handling logic was
extended to transition the relay log state to LOG_CLOSED from
LOG_TO_BE_OPENED.
To fix the second problem, the RESET SLAVE ALL logic is extended to
clear the domain_id filter and ignore_server_ids.

Another benefit is that a lot of cast of char to uchar could be removed.

Problems --------
The slave io thread did not conduct integrity check
for a group of row-based events. Specifically it tolerates missed
terminal block event that must be flagged with STMT_END. Failure to
react on its loss can confuse the applier thread in various ways.
Another potential issue was that there were no check of impossible
second in row Gtid-log-event while the slave io thread is receiving
to be skipped events after reconnect.
Fixes
-----
The slave io thread is made by this patch to track the rows event
STMT_END status.
Whenever at next event reading the IO thread finds out that a preceding
Rows event did not actually had the flag, an
explicit error is issued.
Replication can be resumed after the source of failure is eliminated,
see a provided test.
Note that currently the row-based group integrity check excludes
the compressed version 2 Rows events (which are not generated by MariaDB
master).
Its uncompressed counterpart is manually tested.
The 2nd issue is covered to produce an error in case the io thread
receives a successive Gtid_log_event while it is post-reconnect
skipping.
and specifically the ack receiving functionality.
Semisync is turned to be static instead of plugin so its functions
are invoked at the same points as RUN_HOOKS.

- Removed a lot of calls to strlen(), especially for field_string
- Strings generated by parser are now const strings, less chance of
accidently changing a string
- Removed a lot of calls with LEX_STRING as parameter (changed to pointer)
- More uniform code
- Item::name_length was not kept up to date. Now fixed
- Several bugs found and fixed (Access to null pointers,
access of freed memory, wrong arguments to printf like functions)
- Removed a lot of casts from (const char*) to (char*)

- Create_field::change and after changed to LEX_CSTRING
- handler::connect_string, comment and engine_name() changed to LEX_CSTRING
- Checked printf() related calls to find bugs. Found and fixed several
errors in old code.
- A lot of changes from LEX_STRING to LEX_CSTRING, especially related to
parsing and events.
- Some changes from LEX_STRING and LEX_STRING & to LEX_CSTRING*
- Some changes for char* to const char*
- Added printf argument checking for my_snprintf()
- Introduced null_clex_str, star_clex_string, temp_lex_str to simplify
code
- Added item_empty_name and item_used_name to be able to distingush between
items that was given an empty name and items that was not given a name
This is used in sql_yacc.yy to know when to give an item a name.
- select table_name."*' is not anymore same as table_name.*
- removed not used function Item::rename()
- Added comparision of item->name_length before some calls to
my_strcasecmp() to speed up comparison

- Fixed wrong error message in wsrep_mysql_parse()
- Fixed wrong code in find_field_in_natural_join() where real_item() was
set when it shouldn't
- ER_ERROR_ON_RENAME was used with extra arguments.
- Removed some (wrong) ER_OUTOFMEMORY, as alloc_root will already
give the error.

Intermediate commit.
Move the discovery of mysql.gtid_slave_pos* tables into the SQL thread.
This avoids doing things like opening tables and scanning the mysql
schema for tables inside of the START SLAVE statement, which might
interact badly with existing transaction or table locks.
(Even though START SLAVE is documented to implicitly commit any active
transactions, this appears not to be the case in current code).
Table discovery fits naturally in the SQL thread init code, next to
the loading of mysql.gtid_slave_pos state.
The reason for this is that stop slave takes LOCK_active_mi over the
whole operation while some slave operations will also need LOCK_active_mi
which causes deadlocks.
Fixed by introducing object counting for Master_info and not taking
LOCK_active_mi over stop slave or even stop_all_slaves()
Another benefit of this approach is that it allows:
- Multiple threads can run SHOW SLAVE STATUS at the same time
- START/STOP/RESET/SLAVE STATUS on a slave will not block other slaves
- Simpler interface for handling get_master_info()
- Added some missing unlock of 'log_lock' in error condtions
- Moved rpl_parallel_inactivate_pool(&global_rpl_thread_pool) to end
of stop_slave() to not have to use LOCK_active_mi inside
terminate_slave_threads()
- Changed argument for remove_master_info() to Master_info, as we always
have this available
- Fixed core dump when doing FLUSH TABLES WITH READ LOCK and parallel
replication. Problem was that waiting for pause_for_ftwrl was not done
when deleting rpt->current_owner after a force_abort.
This has no functional changes, but it helps avoid merge problems from 10.0
to 10.1. In 10.0, code that checks for parallel replication uses
opt_slave_parallel_threads > 0, but this check needs to be
mi->using_parallel() in 10.1. By using the same check in 10.0 (with
unchanged semantics), merge problems to 10.1 are avoided.
- Added testing if connection is killed to shortcut reading of connection data
This will allow us later in 10.2 to do a cleaner shutdown of slaves (less errors in the log)
- Add new status variables: Slaves_connected, Slaves_running and Slave_connections.
- Use MYSQL_SLAVE_NOT_RUN instead of 0 with slave_running.
- Don't print obvious extra warnings to the error log when slave is shut down normally.
Delay spawning parallel replication worker threads until a slave SQL
thread is running, and de-spawn them when the last SQL thread stops.
This is especially useful to avoid needless threads on a master in a
setup where same my.cnf is used on masters and slaves.
Adjust the configuration options, as discussed on the
maria-developers@ mailing list.
The option to hint a transaction to not be replicated in parallel is
now called @@skip_parallel_replication, consistent with
@@skip_replication.
And the --slave-parallel-mode is now simplified to have just one of
the following values:
none
minimal
conservative
optimistic
aggressive
This reflects successively harder efforts to find opportunities to run
things in parallel on the slave. It allows to extend the server with
more automatic heuristics in the future without having to introduce a
new configuration option for each and every one.
Implement a new mode for parallel replication. In this mode, all transactions
are optimistically attempted applied in parallel. In case of conflicts, the
offending transaction is rolled back and retried later non-parallel.
This is an early-release patch to facilitate testing, more changes to user
interface / options will be expected. The new mode is not enabled by default.
